4 XIII. Masters World Championships in Modern Pentathlon and Tetrathlon Berlin, 17-21 September 2014
Erik Pock, Denmark
Born 1936 and today the oldest active Masters athlete with the in-tension to continue as active.A Masters Pentathlete from 1997– 2006, but after a riding injury in Münich, I changed to the Tetrath-lon. I have been both the Masters President from 2004 – 2007 for the Masters own organization (UIMPM) and elected as Masters Chairman in the UIPM Masters Committee from 2008.I took the initiative to a closer
cooperation with UIPM and at the Congress in 2008 I presented a new Masters concept with competing in 10 years age groups. Due to the fact that all Masters Championships were won by the oldest Masters athletes because the old handicap point scale was too much in favor for the elderly athletes. The Masters could not agree to a new handicap scale ora faster swimming and running time to getthe 1000points which would be-nefit the younger athletes. Then we decided to implement the age groups from 2008.We also hoped that competing for medals in age groups would bring more and younger Pentathletes into our sport. We also invi-ted the 30+ Pentathletes to join the Masters brotherhood. These changes in the rules has not been accepted by all elderly Masters as well as the demand from UIPM to give up our original own Masters organization with Sports Commission, Technical Commission and a
yearly National fee for competing in our Asters competitions. Now the Masters only financial support comes from the Masters budget decided by UIPM. Nevertheless I have been satisfied with the sup-port and cooperation from the staff at the UIPM HQ and the future for the Masters seems brighter inside UIPM than ever. We must follow the new competitions concept with laser shooting and Combined eventand in some years the 30+ and 40+ Masters do not know else and the elderly Masters will find a way to train for the Combined and still be with us. Remember: To be a Modern Pentathlete/Tetrathlete is a “way of living…for your entire life”.Thank you to all Masters and those FEW national Federations (Hun-gary, German, Ukraine, Holland, Austria) who have helped us to or-ganize our Championships. When I was elected in 2004 I had a vision that the Masters athletes would be accepted and supported worldwide inside the UIPM nati-onal Federations. I am still waiting for this to happen.I am very happy that the 2014 Berlin World Masters Championships will be with new athletes from nations we never have seen before and I hope that my old friend Dr. Sandor Köris will be happy too, when the competition is over. Thank you so much for all your sup-port to me through the many years and for all the Masters competi-tions you have organized and supported over the last 8 years. Now as a 78 year athlete it is time for me to step down as Masters Chairman and to give younger Masters the tough job to implement the laser pistols and the combined event .Thank you for some good years to all Masters athletes and a some sad tears for all those Masters who did not voluntary stopped their Masters career, but passed away during my time as President and Chairman.Erik Pock
5XIII. Masters World Championships in Modern Pentathlon and Tetrathlon Berlin, 17-21 September 2014
Dear Masters,
on behalf of the organizers I do welcome you to Berlin for the XIII. UIPM Masters World Championships in Modern Pentathlon and Tetrathlon from 17.09.-21.09. 2014
It was quite a long way the organizers within and out of Berlin had to go to bring the Masters World Championships 2014 forward.
I was lucky having good experts around me some of them I have been knowing for about forty years. All of them have helped to or-ganize the carrying out of the different disciplines. Without their as-sistance the organization of the large “record” registration number of 122 Masters from 23 nations would not have been possible.
An especial word of praise I would like to give to my friend, the gra-duate engineer Rüdiger Menz, who spent hundreds of hours on the computer controlled competition courses. He will also carry out the evaluations of all results.
Many thanks to all Masters athletes who kept the deadline of the registrations. Thus I could work on the further competition condi-tions and the accommodation planning.
I also express my thanks to the Berlin association of Modern Pent-athlon that have applied and got for us the excellent sport places from the different administrations of the Olympic Park.
Our leaving President Eric Pock we owe thanks for his many years of work he dedicated to our Masters community. We also wish him a
lot of years of active participation in the Masters competitions and the best of health. Last but not least I hope all Masters athletes will have exciting and successful competitions as well as an interesting time in Berlin so that you may keep the Masters World Champion-ships in good remembrance.
With sporty greetingsYoursDr. Sandor Köris Masters Sport Director of UIPMChairman of the Organization
