Superstorm Sandy Affects the NortheastLearn about Soror Jessica Peñaranda’s experience with mobilizing sisters and volunteering with the relief efforts.Sitting in my living room in Uptown Manhattan and watching the scenes
on television of the aftermath, wreckage, and loss one and two days after
Sandy, I began to feel extremely blessed that we were not affected. At
the same time, I felt helpless that I could not assist those that had lost
everything, even families who lost loved ones. As someone who works
in social services I started to think not only about the physical needs
folks were desperately needing, but also there emotional safety and state.
This prompted me to start mobilizing our chapter and through social
media connecting folks with information on how to go about
volunteering. The ripple effect of our sisterhood's volunteer power first
took effect after I signed up for Occupy Sandy, an offshoot of the
Occupy Wall Street movement that began relief efforts the day after the
storm hit. I was receiving and continue to receive constant inquiries
from sisters through email, Facebook, and
text messages about what is needed. On
November 2, about 20 disabled and
elderly folks who live in a building in
Union City, NJ, a town next to the one
where I grew up, were in need of food and
other necessities. Not being able to
access New Jersey from New York City, I
posted the information on Facebook, and
immediately two of our sisters in the area
responded. Continued on Page 2

Superstorm Sandy Affects the Northeast continued...Seeing that by simply getting information out
there was so powerful and helpful, I decided to
do more. On Saturday, November 3, we found
out there was an evacuation center in our
neighborhood (George Washington High
School) and brought much-needed supplies and
clothes there. On that same day leaving the high
school, we (my partner and I) found out there
was a local business group that was mobilizing
to gather supplies and deliver them to Staten
Island and Queens; we also assisted through this
group. Throughout the week as a chapter, Xi
Alpha decided to combine our upcoming
Emergence celebration on November 9 with a
fundraiser for victims of the storm; we raised
over $170, which will continue to help buy
supplies and fund local communities working on
the ground. Earlier that same day I volunteered
in Sunset Park, Brooklyn at St. Jacobi Church
through Occupy Sandy and was assigned to help
out in the distribution center. This experience
was humbling, saddening, but most importantly
empowering to see constant donations coming
in at the same rate of donations leaving with the
canvass volunteers. Preparing boxes and bags of
baby food, formula, nonperishable food, etc. and
realizing how dire the needs still are almost two
weeks after the storm was heartbreaking.
Supplies were dispatched to the Rockaways, Staten Island, and other areas where residents had yet to receive anything, like the NYCHA Housing Projects. This relief movement has really impacted those who had yet to be seen or heard concerning their needs; the community relief model has really sustained an extraordinary effort, and while they may not have the structure or capacity of bigger organizations, like the Red Cross or FEMA, we the community are filling a gap through much needed mutual aid, empowerment, compassion, and empathy. Power to communities!
What else did Xi Alpha do to help Sandy victims?
Tanya volunteered as on-site registered nurse
with the medical reserve corps at a Red Cross
shelter in Philadelphia two 12 hour shifts.
Ivey and Xiomara purchased and delivered food
and supplies to local residents.
Rhaema volunteered with Food Not Bombs to
cook food, including carrots, sautéed onions, rice,
and beans.
Katie volunteered at a local shelter sorting
through donations and serving food.
