Notes from the President & CEO
Chet Tomczyk, President & CEO
This season continues to be, hands down, one of the best programming seasons on WTVP that I can recall. The jewel in the crown was Downton Abbey, both Season and the Season 1 replay. Others must have felt so because on the evening of “The Big Game,” Downton Abbey was the second most viewed program. Other major hits were the anniversary presentations of both Phantom of the Opera and Les Miserables.Joining the costume dramas and musical specials were terrific historical documen-taries about Billy the Kid and General Custer, and another installment of American Experience’s presidential series featuring a look at William Jefferson Clinton. Wednesdays were science nights on PBS and drew increasingly larger audiences, especially young males, and the PBS Friday Arts Festival programs were viewed by more than 5% of the American TV audience.National research has confirmed that PBS is the most trusted institution and is considered an “excellent” use of tax dollars – for the ninth consecutive year, only the military ranked higher. PBS was also called the most fair network for news and public affairs. In addition, PBS KIDS was named the most educational TV/media brand, the safest destination for children to watch television or visit online and the top provider of content that helps children build reading and math skills. (The research was conducted in January and February 01 by the independent, non-partisan research companies Harris Interactive and ORC Online Caravan.)
The best news of all is that you continue to support WTVP and public television with your hard-earned dollars. Without you, none of this success would be pos-sible. Thank you for making it so.Finally, don’t miss out on this year’s WTVP Auction beginning April 6. It’s another great way to support your favorite programs.
Evening UnderwritersThank you to our Evening Underwriters! Their support helps make Auction 01 possible.

being ElmoAdored by people around the world, Elmo is an international icon. But few people know the inspiring story of his creator, Kevin Clash. As a kid growing up in Baltimore in the 1970s, Clash had a dream to be a puppeteer and work with his idol, Jim Henson. With a supportive fam-ily behind him every step of the way, Clash made those dreams come true — and his Elmo is one of the most beloved characters of all time. Narrated by Whoopi Goldberg and directed by Constance Marks, the award-winning documentary Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey comes to WTVP Sunday, April 8 at 10:30 p.m. on INDEPEN-DENT LENS, The 90-minute film will encore the next night, Monday, April 9 at 8:00 p.m.
The film includes rare archival footage and interviews with Frank Oz, Rosie O’Donnell, Cheryl Henson, Joan Ganz Cooney, and others, offering a unique look at Kevin Clash’s life on Sesame Street and at the Jim Henson Workshop.

Great ExpectationsMASTERPIECE CLASSIC rounds out a stellar season with a big nod to Charles Dickens’ bicentennial.First, an orphan boy meets an escaped convict, a crazed rich woman, a bewitching girl, and grows up to have great expecta-tions of wealth from a mysterious patron, in a sumptuous new production of Dickens’ Great Expectations. Gillian Anderson brings to life the very disturbed Miss Havisham in all her creepy, haunted glory in a standout performance. Sundays, April 1 and 8 at 8:00 p.m. Next, The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a mystery indeed—Dickens died before finishing the manuscript. Using clues left by the author together with inspired guesswork, writer Gwyneth Hughes (Miss Austen Regrets) has adapted and completed the intricately tangled plot for MAS-TERPIECE. Staring Matthew Rhys, Tamzin Merchant, and Julia MacKenzie. Sunday, April 15, 8-10 p.m.
And following in the war-torn romantic footsteps of Downton Abbey, Eddie Redmayne and Clémence Poésy star as two lovers whose fiery affair precedes the firestorm of World War I. Adapted by screenwriter Abi Mor-gan (The Iron Lady, Shame) from Sebastian Faulks’ impassioned novel, Birdsong. Sundays, April 22 and 29 from 8-9:30 p.m. Next month: New Sherlock!

hunting the ElementsWhat are things made of? The answer is astonishing. There are about 90 naturally-occurring elements that are the ingredients for everything and everyone — combining in countless ways to form things from solid rocks to ethereal gases, from scorching acids to the living cells in our body. Of those elements, human beings are made of only six. But how can it be that it takes so few to make so much?
Find out why copper is king, gases are noble and gold is “stand-offish” in NOVA “Hunting the Elements.” In this fascinating two-hour documen-tary, airing Wednesday, April 4 at 8:00 p.m., intrepid New York Times technology correspondent David Pogue — host of NOVA’s popular “Making Stuff” series — takes viewers on a quest to understand chemistry and all of the materials of life. Using animations and eye-popping experiments, the series shows that a scientist’s brain and a matchmaker’s heart are the keys to understanding these tiny building blocks of matter and how they interact in an astonish-ingly human manner.

america revealedTake to the skies for an epic jour-ney and aerial look at the complex networks and systems that keep America running. Technology expert and communications attorney Yul Kwon (winner of “Survivor: Cook Islands”) serves as the adventurous host and guide for this stunning four-part series that helps viewers discover and appreciate the vast infrastructure that makes our modern lives possible.Using aerial footage, high-defini-tion video and real-time satellite data, America Revealed follows Yul Kwon as he climbs, leaps and rides across the U.S. to trace the movements and communications that miraculously come together to grow and deliver our food; transport us and materials; and power our energy addiction. He introduces the individuals who conduct, maintain and keep these systems operating and are at the core of America’s revolutionary manufacturing transformation. Surprises abound and common assumptions are rebuffed as view-ers learn and observe the details and trends that define and drive America’s industries: food, trans-portation, energy and manufac-turing. America Revealed will air on Wednesdays from 9-10 p.m. beginning April 11. Each episode will also encore the following Monday at 9 p.m. Extensive web content for viewers, teachers and students is available at pbs.org/america-revealed.
