VICTORIA DIVISION NEWS

Robert Wiseman recently presented a lecture to

members of the Victoria Division on the effects of Boroninsteels, andwhyBoron is added to some structural steels.

Inhispresentation,Robertexplained the role of boron in steelandweldingconsumables, whattolookforinthechemicalanalysis in the mill or batch certificate, andhowtoadjusttheweldingprocedure.

This topic is particularly relevantgiventhatoverthelastyear, ithasbecomeincreasinglyclearthatlowandmediumstrengthstructuralsteelscontainingundisclosedamountsofboronarebeingimported into Australia.

Analloyingelementusedtoincrease the hardenability andstrengthofsteels, thepresence of boron necessitates that appropriate use of preheat andheatinputcontrols, andweldingconsumableselection.Disclosure of boron levels in steel is important—fabricators needtoknowwhattolookfor, how to assess whether the steelisfitforpurpose, andhowtoadjustweldingprocedures.

The competitors were expected to weld test plates in pipe, plateandanonferrousGTAweld, allwithinthree, hourstonominatedweldingprocedures.

South Metropolitan TAFE (formerlyPolytechnicWestTAFE)heldanIndustryEveninginlateAprilatitsThornlie Campus. Louise Petrick, astheWTIAWesternAustraliaTechnologyManager, was invited to provide an introductory presentation about the WTIA.

Louise’spresentationhighlightedmany of the important projects on which the WTIA is currently working, andgeneratedsomelively discussions around AS/NZS1554.1:2014.

The National Welder Database garneredaconsiderableamountofinterest,particularly

in relation to welder qualificationswithrespecttoISO9606-1,AS2980and AS/NZS1554.1.

Discussionswerealsoquitelively in relation to pre-qualifiedandnon-prequalifiedmaterial,boroncontentandthe responsibility of the manufacturer with respect tothematerialscertificate,as amended by Standards Australia after the publication ofthe2014versionof AS/NZS1554.1.

Theinfluenceofaboroncontentof0.008%orhigheronthematerialsproperties,andtherequirementsforprocedurequalificationswerebrieflydiscussed.Anadditionalpresentationwasrequestedwithmore detail by the audience.
