Introduction
Table of Contents
Joblink Plus Training encourages all learners to actively pursue a work place
experience as part of their training. Work Placement is voluntary and unpaid,
designed to provide you with valuable skills, experience and knowledge for the workforce.
In accredited training, assessment in the workplace is sometimes compulsory, but
not always. In these circumstances, we believe that work placement is best
practice. It’s our job, together with you, to ensure we don’t set you up to fail by
training and assessing you in a qualification, but not preparing you for work.
The information below lets you know what we expect and what you can expect
from a work placement. This booklet should help solve some problems that might
occur, and document the hours you spend in the work place in a way that
supports the achievement of the qualification.
If any of the information contained in this booklet is unclear, or you just
want to double-check on something, please don’t hesitate to ask.

Requirements and Responsibilities
IS WORK PLACEMENT ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY?
It depends on the qualification, and for some it’s more important than others. It is best practice for all training we deliver to
include work placement when the learner is a jobseeker or employed in an unrelated field. Often the guidelines will say “best”
or “should” be assessed – in these cases there is more flexibility. Where there is compulsory work placement, this means
assessment has to take place in that work environment. It’s not simply a case of logging the hours. Your Trainer/Assessor will
need to go to the workplace at a mutually agreeable time and complete observations and document the assessment.
Remember, Work placement also allows for components of your assessments to be completed as you carry out your work
placement requirements.
WHO DOES WHAT?
Arranging suitable work placement is the
responsibility of you first and foremost, with close
support from your Trainer. Joblink Plus staff are able
to assist as well. Organising the work placement is a
good experience for you, and it develops your
confidence and communication skills.
If this sounds like grass roots door-knocking type
work, that’s because it is. Your Trainer will set aside
class time to talk about work placement with you
and to plan for phone calls, visits, dress codes and
other details. The RTO has documentation to
support work placement arrangements, and we are
always available for advice.
PREPARATION ACTIVITY 1
Note below your consultant, a Joblink Plus
Training staff member and a friend or family member who works in the area you would like to get into.
HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?
Quality not quantity. Your training plan gives you a guide to how many hours you will need to log, but it’s important to be flexible. You might spend 3
days somewhere and gain more knowledge and experience with the right supervisor than another learner might gain over 3
months in a different environment. That’s why planning for your work placement, and getting the most out of it is really
important.

Job differences. Some jobs require a lot more time to learn, and some skills are developed over a longer period of time. For example, in a
hospitality course it can take a relatively short period of time to learn to make great scrambled eggs, but learning great customer
service takes more time.
THE TRAINING PLAN SAYS 60 HOURS, BUT I HAVEN’T DONE THAT MUCH. WHAT NOW?
The hours allocated to a course are usually nominal. Leading on from ‘quality not quantity’, in cases where you have run out of
time or had a personal situation prevent you from completing the nominal hours, it is up to your Trainer/Assessor to make a
decision about the your competency. In these circumstances, your Trainer will work with Joblink Plus staff to figure out the best
plan and let you know.
BARRIERS TO WORK PLACEMENT
If you have circumstances or barriers that would prevent them from completing a work placement, it’s best to think about how
to address those now rather than later. These barriers might be practical – such as transport or child care commitments – or
psychological, such as a lack of confidence. Your consultant and Trainer can plan with you about overcoming the barriers, and
ensuring that the workplace you choose is the best placement.
PRACTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
If you cannot attend work placement due to illness or another circumstance, you (or someone on your behalf if you are unable to talk) need to phone the host workplace FIRST. Then contact Joblink Plus. A key part of employment is knowing who to contact if you can’t be where you are expected to be. The same applies if you are going to be late. An SMS or email is NOT appropriate, unless you have confirmed this with the workplace.
You may be required to sign a declaration of confidentiality, and provide a Working with Children Check or
Police Check.
Most workplaces have dress requirements either for safety or professional reasons. If you
need assistance to meet the requirements speak with your consultant.
PREPARATION ACTIVITY 2
List as many workplace dress requirements that you can think of. Include uniforms, safety gear,
and casual dress.
PREPARATION ACTIVITY 3
Consider the following questions. You might like to make some notes for yourself afterwards.

Steps to a Successful Work Placement
1. List at least three places you would like to do work placement and get the contact details. Phone, mailing
address and email.
2. Make initial contact by phone or email, and indicate that you will follow up with written information.
3. Working with your Trainer, make written contact with the work place using the letter template from your
Trainer. This information tells the employer what we are asking of them as well.
4. Follow up with a phone call or face to face contact.
5. Get written confirmation (can be an email to [email protected]) of the days, hours and who your
best contact in the work place will be, and make sure your consultant and your Trainer know too.
6. Get written information about what the dress requirements are.
7. A few days before you are due to commence make contact by phone again to confirm everything is ready to
go
8. Take this booklet with you to your work placement so you can complete the Log of Hours, and the supervisor
in the work place can sign off where required.
