REMEMBERING

In keeping with the practice observed by many Conservative
congregations, the Woodbury Jewish Center has prepared this
Book of Remembrance which contains the text of the Yizkor
Memorial Service and the names of those departed submitted
by their loved ones.
This booklet will be distributed to our worshipers for use
during the Yizkor Service for Yom Kippur as well as for the
Memorial Services conducted at other times during the year.
This booklet is provided in the hope that you will find it both
useful and meaningful, not only as an instrument of prayer, but
also as a vehicle through which we honor those who have
departed in body, but live on in our hearts and minds.

There is a time for everything,
for all things under the sun:
A time to be born and a time to die,
a time to laugh and a time to cry;
a time to dance and a time to mourn,
a time to seek and a time to lose,
a time to forget and a time to remember.
This day in sacred convocation
we remember those who gave us life.
We remember those who enriched our lives
with love and beauty, kindness and compassion,
thoughtfulness and understanding.
We renew our bonds to those
who have gone the way of all the earth,
to those whose memory moves us this day.
As we reflect upon them, we seek consolation,
and the strength and the insight born of faith.
As a parent shows love to a child
Adonai embraces all who are faithful.
God knows how we are fashioned,
remembers that we are dust.
Our days are as grass;
we flourish as a flower in the field.
The wind passes over it and it is gone,
and no one can recognize where it grew.
3
But Adonai’s compassion for those who are steadfast,
God’s tenderness to children’s children,
remain, age after age, unchanging.
Three score and ten our years may number,
four score years if granted the vigor.
Laden with trouble and travail,
life quickly passes; it flies away.
What are mortals, eternal God,
That You should be mindful of them?
What are mortals, that You should take note of them,
That You have made them little less than angels?
The sounds of infants attest to Your power;
the magnificence of life reflects Your glory.
The heavens display Your splendor.
What majesty is Yours throughout the world!
Teach us to use all of our days,
That we may attain a heart of wisdom.
Bless us with Your love in the morning,
That we may joyously sing all our days.
O Lord, as we recall all our departed and the blessings they
bequeathed unto us, we pray to You to keep their souls united with
ours in the bond of life. May our faith, like theirs, be strong, our
devotion to the Torah unfaltering, our love for Zion constant, and
our concern for Israel and humanity unceasing. For as we identify
ourselves with the life, hopes and traditions of an eternal people,
we ourselves take on the aspect of eternity. May we so live that
when our years draw to a close, we too, shall be remembered for
good and for blessing. Amen
Each congregant silently reads the appropriate passages from
among those which follow. Personal meditations may also be
added.
והגוף פעל הנשמה ל ,חוסה על עמל
The soul is Yours, and the body is Your handiwork, have mercy
on the fruit of Your labors

A Prayer for Those Not Saying Yizkor for Parents
The following prayer may be recited by worshippers
who are blessed by having their parents still living
while others are reciting Yizkor:
Almighty God, while those who have lost their
parents and their dear ones call to mind those who
have gone to their eternal rest, I at this solemn
moment raise my eyes unto You, the Giver of Life,
and from a grateful heart thank You for Your mercies
in having preserved the lives of my beloved father
and mother.
May it be Your will, Adonai my God and God
of my ancestors, to bless them with health and
strength, so that they may be with me for many years
to come. Bless them even as they have blessed me,
and guard them even as they have guarded me.
In return for all their affection and the
sacrifices which they have made for me, may I bring
them joy and lighten their cares. May it be my
privilege to help them in every way that lies within
my power; may I learn to understand and recognize
the duty I owe unto them, that I may never have
cause to reproach myself when it comes too late.
Shield my home from all sorrow. May peace
and harmony and Your spirit ever reign within its
walls. Keep me true to You and to all whom I come
in contact so that I may do Your will with a perfect
heart, my Creator in Heaven.
Amen.

May God remember the souls of His heroic children: The fighters of
the Israel Defense Forcesˏ who fell in the wars of Israelˏ in defensiveˏ
retaliativeˏ and security actions and during the fulfillment of their
dutyˏ including the souls of the underground fighters and brigades
who fought in the national struggle - all those who sacrificed their
lives for the sanctification of God's Name.
And with the help of Godˏ the Lord of Israel's campaignsˏ they
brought about the revival of the nation and the state and the
redemption of the land and the city of God.
They were quicker than eagles and stronger than lions as they
volunteered to assist the nationˏ and they saturated our holy land with
their pure blood.
The memory of their self-sacrifice and heroic deeds will never
disappear from us. May their souls be bound in the Bond of Life with
the souls of Abrahamˏ Isaac and Jacobˏ and with the souls of the
other heroes and martyrs of Israel who are in the Garden of Eden.
Amen.

In memory of all the dead:
Exalted, compassionate God, grant infinite rest in Your sheltering
presence, among the holy and pure, to the souls of our brethren who
perished in the Shoah - men, women, and children of the House of Israel
who were slaughtered and suffocated and burned to ashes. May their
memory endure, and inspire deeds of charity and goodness in our lives.
May their souls thus be bound up in the bond of life. May they rest in
peace. And let us say: Amen.
Exalted, compassionate God, grant infinite rest in Your sheltering
presence, among the holy and pure, to the souls of all our beloved who
have gone to their eternal home. Merciful One, we ask that our loved
ones find perfect peace in Your tender embrace, their memory enduring
as inspiration for commitment to their ideals and integrity in our lives.
May their souls thus be bound up in the bond of life. May they rest in
peace. And let us say: Amen.

MEDITATION FOR OUR CONGREGANTS
In memory of congregants:
We lovingly recall these members of our congregation who no
longer dwell upon this earth.
DECEASED 5779
MICHAEL LEIBOWITZ
LISA STEWART
STEPHEN WEISENHOLZ
They have a special place in our hearts. We pray this day that
all who have sustained the loss of loved ones be granted
comfort and strength.
Exalted, compassionate God, comfort the bereaved families of
this congregation. Help all of us to perpetuate the worthy
values in the lives of those no longer with us, whom we
remember this day. May their memory endure as a blessing.
And let us say Amen.
WE REMEMBER THEM
At the rising of the sun and at its going down,
we remember them.
At the blowing of the wind and in the chill of winter,
we remember them.
At the opening of the buds and in the rebirth of spring,
we remember them.
At the shining of the sun and in the warmth of summer,
we remember them.
At the rustling of the leaves and in the beauty of autumn,
we remember them.
At the beginning of the year and at its end,
we remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part
of us, as we remember them.
When we are weary and in need of strength,
we remember them.
When we are lost and sick at heart, we remember them
When we have joy we crave to share,
we remember them.
When we have decisions that are difficult to make,
we remember them.
When we have achievements that are based on theirs,
we remember them.
As long as we live, they too will live; for they are now a part
of us, as we remember them.

PSALM 23 כ״ג תהלים
A Psalm of David מזמור לדוד
.יי רעי א אחסר
The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
בנאות דשא ירביצני
He gives me repose in green meadows.
נפשי ישובב .מי מנחות ינהלני-על
He leads me beside the still waters to revive my spirit.
.צדק למען שמו -ינחני במעגלי
He guides me on the right path, for that is His nature.
,אתה עמדי-אירא רע כי-אל בגיא צלמות א-גם כי
Though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no harm, for You are with me.
.שבט ומשענת המה ינחמני
Your staff and Your rod comfort me.
,תער לפני שלחן נגד צררי
You prepare a banquet for me in the presence of my foes.
.דשנת בשמן ראשי כוסי רויה
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
,ימי חיי-א טוב וחסד ירדפוני כל
Surely goodness and kindness shall be my portion all the days of my life.
.יי לאר ימים-ושבתי בבית
And I shall dwell in the House of the Lord forever.
May God’s name be exalted and hallowed throughout the world that
God created, as is God’s wish. May God’s sovereignty soon be
accepted, during our life and the life of all Israel. And let us say: Amen.
May God’s great name be praised throughout all time.
Glorified and celebrated, lauded and worshipped, exalted and honored,
extolled and acclaimed may the Holy One be, praised [far] beyond all
song and psalm, beyond all tributes that mortals can utter. And let us
say: Amen.
Let there be abundant peace from heaven, with life’s goodness for us
and for all Israel. And let us say: Amen.
May the One who brings peace to the universe bring peace to us and to
all Israel. And let us say: Amen.
28
MOURNER’S KADDISH
29
MOURNER’S KADDISH
יהי זכרם ברו Y’hi zikhram barukh
May their memories be for a blessing. Amen.
30
KINDLING THE YAHRZEIT LIGHT:
The yahrzeit candle should burn from sunset to sunset, on the
anniversary of the day of death according to the Hebrew calendar. A
selection from Psalms or other passages found in this book may be
read. There is no special prayer or benediction that must be recited.
It is appropriate to meditate briefly - silently or aloud. Some
suggested reflections follow:
• I now recall my dear ________________ who has gone to his/her
eternal home. May his/her soul be bound up in the bond of life,
in peace. Amen.
• Zekher tzadik l’vrakhah. The memory of the righteous is a
blessing. May my life continue to embrace the life and deeds, the
words and thoughts of ___________ who has gone to his/her
eternal home. May he/she rest in peace. Amen.
• O merciful God, I turn to You in prayer on the yahrzeit of the
death of my dear __________. Be with me as I stand in
remembrance and in loving recollection. As I light this candle in
his/her memory, I put my trust in You.
• Renew my strength, O Lord. I am grateful for the years of the life
of ___________. Help me to understand how my life has been
formed and shaped by what he/she was and by what he/she did.
Help me to make part of my life a living monument of holiness to
his/her memory. May he/she rest in peace. Amen.
IN LASTING REMEMBRANCE
The synagogue is our religious home and the meeting place in
which we focus our spiritual energies in song and prayer. In
supporting the sacred function and role of our synagogue, we
give life to the memory of those who have preceded us.
It is a longstanding Jewish custom and tradition to give tzedakah
to the synagogue in honor of our departed loved ones. By
honoring them in this way we serve the living, and in doing so,
perpetuate the memory of the departed.
There are many opportunities available at Woodbury Jewish
Center to do so. Some of these include:
Support of the Kol Nidre Appeal
Donation of Prayer Books and Chumashim
Memorial Plaques and Yahrzeit Donations
Tree of Life
Of the many mitzvot incumbent upon us, the advancement of
the teaching of Torah and the raising of another generation of
Jews committed to our faith are of primary importance. Support
of our synagogue in the name of our departed helps insure that
“the memory of the righteous shall be for a blessing.”
We urge you to give generously in this spirit. For further
information or to discuss a special wish you may have, please
contact the synagogue office at 516·496·9100 x120.
