Readings
This week, students are required to read three articles from the February 2003 issue of the California
Dental Journal:
Featherstone, J. The Caries Balance: Contributing Factors and Early Detection (pg. 129134)
Berkowitz, R. Acquisition and Transmission of Mutans Streptococci (pg. 135138)
Crall, J. California Children and Oral Health: Trends and Challenges (pg. 125128)
These articles can be accessed on the California Dental Association website
(http://www.cdafoundation.org/education/resources-library) by clicking the February 2003 issue link.
Quiz
Each week, students will complete a 10-question, multiple-choice quiz on the week's video lectures.
Correct answers and scores are only revealed to students after the quiz has closed (multiple attempts
are provided in case a student experiences technical errors or other problems with their initial attempt).
These quizzes are usually due the week they are assigned; however, for Week 1, the quiz is not due
until the end of Week 2 (Monday, April 14, 12:00PM (Noon) Pacific Time). Quizzes can be found by
clicking the "Quizzes" link in the left-hand navigation menu for this course.
Peer Assessment
After completing this week's readings (described above), students are required to complete a few
writing prompts, which ask you to summarize these articles in your own words, apply their concepts to
dental/health sciences practice, and answer questions that may have arisen when completing the
readings. Peer Assessments are usually due the week they are assigned; however, for Week 1, the
peer assessment is not due until the end of Week 2 (Monday, April 14, 12:00PM (Noon) Pacific
Time). Detailed information may be found by clicking the "Peer Assessments" link in the left-hand
navigation menu of the course.
Discussion Forums
In the Discussion Forums, students can introduce themselves, discuss assignments, report technical
issues with the course, and talk about each week's video lectures. Since this is the first week of the
class, please take a moment to introduce yourself to classmates in the Introductions forum. Each week
of lectures has its own dedicated discussion forum; visit the Week 1 Lectures forum to discuss this
week's video lectures and concepts.
