Review of WIC Food PackagesImproving Balance and Choice: Final Report
Congress mandates that an evaluation of the WIC food packages must occur every 10 years.
USDA contracted with the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine (formerly the IOM ‐ Institute of Medicine) to conduct the review.
An expert committee reviewed and assessed the nutritional status and food and nutritional needs of the WIC population and provided specific recommendations based on most current science.
The committee published its recommendations in January 2017: “Review of WIC Food Packages Improving Balance and Choice: Final Report.”
Review of WIC Food Packages, Cont.
Committee Recommendations:
Increase: whole grains; vegetables and fruits; and seafood (included in more packages)
Decrease: Juice, dairy (milk), peanut butter, legumes, infant food
Next Steps:
USDA to review recommendations, determine what recommendations to adopt
