Dear Whiteoaks Families,
To support our ongoing work of building respectful relationships, this past Mon-
day, Peel Regional Police did an anti-bullying presentation to our grade 2 classes. In
May, our grade 3 classes will participate in a similar workshop.
April 13 is Day of Pink, the international day to celebrate diversity and inclusion to
work towards ending homophobia, transphobia and all forms of bullying and dis-
crimination. This year, there are several bolded holy days taking place on April 13.
In order to give all of our students an opportunity to be part of this important inclu-
sion activity, Peel District School Board schools will recognize Day of Pink on April 12
this year. Day of Pink is just one way for us to reflect and strengthen our focus to-
wards achieving equity for all students and staff. Our student leadership teams will
be visiting classes tomorrow to discuss Whiteoaks’ participation in the Day of Pink.
Ms. Marino and Mrs. Axiak started the grade 2 chess and checkers club. Last
week on its first day, Ms. Marino noted: “The chess and checkers club for almost 100
of our grade 2 students was extremely fun and exciting. The students enjoyed play-
ing with their classroom friends or making new friends. They were all very respectful
and enjoyed the rest of their first nutrition break having fun in the gym”. We appreci-
ate the energy and enthusiasm of our students. Thank-you to our staff for providing
this opportunity for our students.
As you are aware, April 11th is a Professional Learning Day. A list of agenda items
for the day is as follows:
Mandatory Health and Safety Training
Assessment/Numeracy: theory of action; learning goals; success criteria
Developing lesson plans for delivery of the updated HPE curriculum
Peel Public Health, in partnership with the PDSB, is promoting active transporta-
tion (i.e. walking, cycling, etc.) to school for students as part of a healthy lifestyle. In
order to support this work, they are planning to conduct traffic counts at a number
of our schools to establish baseline data for this initiative. Whiteoaks P.S. has been
selected as one of the schools where traffic counts will occur. These traffic counts
will occur this spring and early in the fall. A parent information letter was sent out the
community by email yesterday, April 5th.
To guide the Peel board in the development of its 2016-17 school year budget,
trustees are seeking input from staff, parent, student and community members.
We’d like to hear from you about what you see as budget priorities for the upcom-
ing school year. Please see the article inserted in this newsletter entitled: Let’s Talk:
Provide input on the Peel District School Board’s 2016-17 budget priorities. This item is
on the agenda for the April 12th Whiteoaks School Council meeting.
Yours in education,
G. Lorentz

occur, by reading messages about cultural celebrations over the announcements. In addition, we insert a
chart in each week’s newsletter indicating Days of Celebration, their dates and the Faiths and Cultures that
observe them. We have included the chart of celebrations for the upcoming weeks in this newsletter.

Looking for Paid Lunchroom Supervisors
hiteoaks Public School is looking to hire additional paid Lunchroom Supervisors for the remainder of this school year and for the 2016-2017
school year!
Lunchroom Supervisors fill a very important role in the school. They supervise stu-
dents while they eat lunch in their classrooms and while they play outdoors during nu-
trition breaks. This is a great opportunity to get involved and make a difference for stu-
dents at Whiteoaks.
Hours of supervision range from 40 minutes to 80 minutes and can be flexible in order
to accommodate supervisor needs. Lunchroom supervisors can choose to do one or
two nutrition breaks and we are happy to hire full or part-time
If you are interested in becoming a Lunchroom Supervisor, please contact our Vice-
Principal, Mrs. Barnes, at 905-822-0451 to set up an interview.
Thank you for considering this important role.

Let’s Talk: Provide input on PDSB Budget
Let’s Talk: Provide input on the Peel District School Board’s
2016-17 budget priorities
The Peel District School Board has a long history of fiscal responsibility, focused on a mission to inspire success, confidence and hope in each student. Through our goal to use resources effectively to enhance student achievement, the board has been able to do so in an efficient and sustainable manner, while supporting the needs of all learners.
To guide the Peel board in the development of its 2016-17 school year budget, trustees are seeking input from staff, parent, student and community members. We’d like to hear from you about what you see as budget priorities for the upcoming school year. To provide input, individuals may:
Delegate the board at Regular Meetings of the Board on April 26, 2016, or May 10, 2016.
Provide input through your School Council. Please contact your School Council chair to find out when budget consultation will be discussed at an upcoming meeting.
Complete a brief, online survey at www.peelschools.org/BUDGET by May 13, 2016. Before you provide input, you may choose to refer to the Peel board’s Report Card for Student Success at www.reportcardforstudentsuccess.org in an effort to align your ideas with the board’s strategic plan, goals and key priorities. Other resources are available at www.peelschools.org/BUDGET.

Our Healthy School Community—Active Living Idea
The warmer temperatures and longer days of spring can be wonderful for outdoor activities after school.
Please consider these safety tips from the Peel Regional Police website: http://www.peelpolice.ca
Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable of road users. Effective January 1st new laws enacted to make Ontar-
io roads safer requires drivers to stop and yield the entire roadway at pedestrian crossovers and school cross-
ings. To assist drivers and pedestrians, Peel Regional Police would like to offer some safety tips:
Drivers
Obey the rules of the road including all traffic signs and signals;
Avoid any handheld electronic devices while driving;
Avoid other distractions and give driving your full attention;
Double check blind spots before changing lanes;
Drive within the posted speed limits and adjust accordingly to the weather and traffic conditions;
Apply extra care when entering and changing directions at an intersection.
Pay extra attention to pedestrians;
Keep your vehicle in good condition, with proper tires inflated at the correct pressure. Make sure your
brakes are in good working order and ensure your windshield is clean and free from obstructions.
Pedestrians
Pedestrian safety is in your hands. Be alert at all times to your surroundings;
Don’t rely solely on traffic signals or stop signs. Ensure that it is safe to cross the road before crossing;
Walk on sidewalks whenever possible;
Whenever possible use a crosswalk to cross the street. Avoid “jaywalking” or crossing the street between
vehicles;
Parents – ensure that you are aware of your children’s location and activity at all times. Do not allow young
children to play near roadways, unsupervised;
After dark, drivers cannot see people in dark clothing until it's too late. Wear bright clothing, something re-
flective or carry a lit flash light so drivers will see you.
Cyclists
Obey the rules of the road including all traffic signs and signals;
Make your presence known. Wear bright or reflective colour clothing. At night or in inclement weather, it is
important to use reflective lights in the front, side and rear that make you visible from all directions;
Do not run stop signs or red lights or use the wrong side of the street. It is best and safest to ride single file;
Make eye contact with drivers whenever possible. This ensures that the motorists see you and helps you assert your
rightful place on the road;
Make sure you are always aware of your surroundings. Know what is behind you and watch out for what is
in front of you;
Clearly communicate your intentions by using hand signals;
Make sure your brakes are always in top-notch condition. Be aware of how weather and road conditions can
affect your ability to brake.
Peel Regional Police are urging both drivers and pedestrians to be extra vigilant. Keep in mind that just because
you have the right of way doesn’t mean it is safe to utilize it. Officers from Road Safety Services want both driv-
ers and pedestrians to have a safe enjoyable year.
