CARMEL TAKES THE WIN The track, the field, the cheers! Athletics day 2018 was a celebration of both the athlete and the supporter. Houses divided in
competition and students wore their colours with pride. Red, Yellow, Green. Running, throwing and jumping events gave
students of all ages an opportunity to showcase their talents and gain points for their house. Students were willing to give
each event a crack from the 100m to discus and proved that even the dreariest of weather couldn’t dampen the Mount
Carmel girl’s spirit.
Standouts of the carnival included the day favourite, the staff vs student relay. It was a ruthless race and saw one of the closest
finishes of the carnival. On the student relay team, the fastest athletes of Year 10 were put against the house captains, suited
up and ready to tumble down the track. In the other lane, the staff team consisting of Mr Mac, Mr Hyatt, Mr Chapman and Mr
Bennet were warming up and getting their game face on, willing to put all dignity on the line to achieve carnival glory.
It was a neck and neck finish between Lauren Canning and Mr Chapman, with some foul
play and aggression on his part. Everyone, from all houses cheered and screamed as the
two runners raced down the strait and with some sideline support Lauren managed to
scrape past and bring it home for the students of Mount Carmel College.
The results were announced at the conclusion of the day and titled Carmel house as the
champions of the 2018 athletics carnival, led by Isobel Calvert and Emily Grzinic from Year
10, and the Primary House Captains. Although Carmel was victorious, every house and
every student did their bit and contributed to the carnival. Whether they stole the show on
the track or the field, or simply cheered their house on. It was a spectacular day of
competition, glory and intense house spirit.
THE GREATEST SHOWMAN The Greatest Showman was released in December 2017, and if you haven’t had
the chance to watch it, then you must rent it once it comes out on DVD. It is a
family friendly film, which explores friendships, the struggles that come with
following your dreams, love, and of course, integrates many profound songs.
However, the most prominent theme is one which Mount Carmel has previously
addressed, diversity, and more so, Unity in Diversity. As P.T Barnum, depicted
by Hugh Jackman, works to make his mark on the world, he celebrates the
differences of others - ranging from appearance, to race, and encourages the
individuals to embrace their quirks and characteristics. The movie also discusses
the impact fame and pressure can have on a person. It teaches the audience to
be true to themselves, and remember the things which are important - a topic
which is fairly relevant to students as pressure increases during NAPLAN,
exams, common testing and general day-to-day school life.
The musical story, which is based on the man who created the circus, is portrayed by popular talents, Hugh
Jackman, Zac Efron, Michelle Williams and Zendaya. Overall, it's a wonderful, fun-filled movie which provides
laughter, smiles and entertainment - not to mention a bunch of new songs to reenact.

EMBRACE OUR BELONGING As we begin a new term, refreshed and revived we encourage
you to think about the Mount Carmel community and how it
impacts you. As a College, we want students to feel welcomed,
and nurtured, to feel that they belong at school and that they are
all part of something special.
Have you ever heard the phrase, ‘It takes a village’? Meaning it
takes more than just one person or a few to make a positive
change and create a strong community. We all have something
unique to contribute and are all responsible for the impact we
have on others lives. At Mount Carmel College, we want to create
leaders. Young women who are passionate and loved by the
people in their lives. Who harness their potential and inspire
others to do the same. This can only be achieved with a
community behind them and a strong sense of belonging.
In Term Two, we want to focus on embracing our belongings.
Within our Mount Carmel community we have parents, teachers
and leaders who in second term are working to involve students
in their community and build relationships within the College.
Whether it be sport, academic or creative endeavours we will
support every student and involve ourselves in their journey.
Encourage and invest in them.
So we ask you to involve yourselves too, to get to know the
community you belong to and give all that you have to offer.
Support one another and play your part. You could voice your
ideas or start an initiative, volunteer locally or simply just support
and encourage your peers. Help us build a strong, nurturing and
inspiring community. Help us build our village.
Feel free to ask any of your student leaders for a chat or drop
your suggestions in the suggestion box in the library, we would
love to hear what you have to say!
Questions & Answers
Term 2 Common Questions
What uniform is to be worn in Term 2?
During Term 2, the winter uniform is worn.
This consists of:
- The Boater
- Skirt
- Jumper or Cardigan
- Shirt
- Tie
- Blazer
- Stockings
- Shoes
Currently the school is going through a
uniform change over period. During this time
students who aren't due to buy a new
uniform can continue wearing the previous
brown winter uniform - particularly students
in year 9 and 10.
What are the guidelines during Term 2 for
PE uniform?
When students have PE, they are allowed to
wear their full sports uniform both to and
from school. This is also allowed if an
individual has three subjects or activities
where PE uniform is required. In this
instance, they must request an exemption
card.
What is NAPLAN? Why do I have to do it?
NAPLAN is a series of test undertaken by years 3,
5, 7 and 9 in Term 2. Students in these grades
complete tests on numeracy, reading, writing and
language conventions. The tests allow the
Australian Government and education system to
gather an understanding on the strengths and
weaknesses of differing schools, and the country
as a whole.

A GLIMPSE OF WONDERLAND
An upcoming night to remember. Students invested in Mount Carmel’s
progressing play, The Wizard of Wonderland, have provided a peek
down the yellow brick road of wonderland. Jozette Levy, a musician
for the musical, described the looming production as, “a mix between
Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz.” It will follow the story of a
young girl, Beth, played by Maddison Mingari, as she embarks on a
journey in a fantasy land, whilst mourning her sisters death. Many
familiar characters will be included, such as the Lion, played by Sofija
Burton, the Tin Man, played by Isabella Mahmoud, and the Scarecrow,
played by Emma Brough. Maddison Mingari, the lead, explained that
the characters will reflect Beth’s emotions throughout the mourning
process of her sister.
Auditions were conducted within the Year 9 and 10 drama class.
Managed by Miss A and Patricia Clark, students wishing for specific
roles performed a scene to the class as their audition. Those who also
wanted a singing role, continued to further auditioning with Miss A, Mr
Macnamara and Patricia Clark, where they sung individually. The
group decided against two casts for this year’s production, which,
despite resulting in some girls being unsuccessful in the role of their
choice, “taught us the realism of show business,” stated Maddison
Mingari.
The production will be a fantasy, coming of age musical, with comedic
elements. Chelsea Pyke, playing March Hare, quoted, “This years
musical also has a special message behind it. It's important that people
look out for that special message, and also the teamwork, sweat and
tears that we have, and will, put into this musical.”
The team consists of dancers, actors, ensemble, band and backstage -
as well as the directors and teachers involved. They've been busy
rehearsing in both class time and Wednesday afternoons, and
overcoming the various challenges that arise with organising a school
musical. Maddison Mingari stated, “Casting and auditioning had been
an extremely stressful experience to say the least— it is clear to see that
the cast was very worn out after it, but we persevered through these
difficulties, to come to where we are now. We faced editing issues with
adapting the script— there were so many scenes and ideas we wished
to evolve (backstories, character development, etc.) but only so much
time could be spent on this. We found ourselves falling down rabbit
holes of our own (pun intended). But we had Ms A’s skilful guidance and
expertise to steer us in the right direction.”
Showcasing the stars of the arts, the Wizard of Wonderland will be a
show not to miss. Keep an eye out for further updates, as the
production continues to skip down the yellow brick road.

SCHOOL STRESS
What are some big school stressors?
Different things cause stress in different people. Some of the things students commonly say are causes of stress include:
• Homework, especially tests and exams
• Deadlines
• Poor time management. Leaving assignments to the last minute
• Body image concerns
• Social relationships with friends and boyfriends/girlfriends
• High personal expectations or high expectations from parents, teachers and friends.
• Parents or problems at home
• Lack of sleep
Very often stress results from an accumulation of many different pressures, which build up gradually without us noticing. If you
can identify why you’re feeling stressed, it will be easier to address the cause and manage your stress appropriately.
What are some tips to handle stress?
1. Take time for self-care.
Start with the basics, like sleep, healthy food and down time. Getting enough sleep is good for your brain and body, and helps
you feel energised, stay focused and protect your mental health. Turn all screens off an hour before bed and charge all devices
outside of your bedroom. Eat nutritional snacks that keep you going, such as fruit/nuts/dairy, etc. Taking time to enjoy creative
activities that keep you from dwelling on or stressing over school pressures can go far in decreasing your stress levels. Remember
to get some exercise every day as this helps you to keep focused and energetic. Keeping fit and staying active can help you to
sleep better, manage stress and boost your mood. Spending time with friends and family (including pets) can really strengthen
your mental health and wellbeing. Say no to things you won't be able to handle.
2. Learn to change your thinking/ self-talk.
Challenge negative thinking patterns, by coming up with specific examples to counter the stressful thoughts. Ask yourself the
following questions to challenge your self-talk: “What is the evidence that this thought is true?” “What would I tell a friend if she
had thought that?” “What is the worst thing that can happen?” and “If it did happen, what can I do?” Don't catastrophise and
don’t keep talking about how stressed out you are.
3. Take assignments one step at a time and timetable your study.
Break down your work into manageable, bite-sized portions that feel less overwhelming than looking at the big picture. If you
have an essay to write that’s making you feel anxious, list the individual steps that lead to the destination of the essay being
finished and the task will begin to feel less daunting. List what you have going on, and how much time each is going to take.
What's the best way to cope with NAPLAN?
Remind yourself that you take tests all the time and this is just one more. Nothing bad can happen other than getting information
to get the help that you need. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing
learning progress. No one test will define who you are and what you are capable of.
Here are some helpful ideas to consider when preparing for the NAPLAN test: • Approach NAPLAN with a positive attitude. • Get perspective and try your best. • Help yourself to relax. Simple techniques like taking three deep breathes and having a
drink of water. • Prepare for the day. Having a good nights sleep and a good breakfast will help you to
concentrate and try your best.
