so as to be worldly-wise; not naive:
a sophisticated young socialite; the sophisticated eye of a journalist.

How to be It ?
1. 1
Get the attitude. Have you noticed that it is not only their appearance that makes
sophisticated people sophisticated? It is their overall attitude towards life, others
and themselves. So try beginning by being more mature and responsible. People
will notice.
1. 2
Begin with personal hygiene. It is absolutely imperative that you are always neat
and clean. Shower daily, wash your hair, brush your teeth, wash your face, shave
or wax the relevant areas etc.
1. 3
Get the looks. Without being shallow or anything like that, I have to remind that
good looks are important. If you want to look sophisticated, always look nice.
Have your hair and nails done, wear reasonable amounts of reasonable make-up
and pluck your eyebrows regularly.
1. 4
Dress appropriately. Apart from hair styles and make-up, the way you dress is of
crucial importance as well. Always dress for the occasion (as in: do not wear the
same to school and to the opera). For everyday style, go with nice clothes that fit
you. You do not need to spend a fortune, just choose pieces that you look and feel
nice in. For instance, a dark blue knee-length skirt, a white blouse and a black
cardigan combined with a pair of stylish black ballet flats or pumps will look great
at the library, museum or school. It is also an appropriate style for meeting
someone in a restaurant or café.
1. 5
Be well-read and educated. It is mostly education that makes people really
sophisticated. So do your best in school, study hard, get good grades and aim for
college. Also learn at least one foreign language and read the most significant
works of world literature. Along with a general knowledge of art and philosophy,
these are exactly the things that will help you make a better impression and will
also contribute to your personal growth.
1. 6
Choose a hobby. Ever wondered why all the sophisticated people seem to know
each other? Frankly, it is because they do. They run into each other on social or
cultural occasions (plays, expositions, balls etc) but they also have common
hobbies. If you want to befriend some sophisticated young people, try taking up
one of the activities they usually do. Do not force yourself. Just give it a chance
and most probably you will find something you will enjoy. Some activities include
tennis, golf, horseback riding, rowing, chess, archery, ballet or dancing in general,
classical singing, foreign languages, painting or poetry. There are many, many
other hobbies and sports you can choose from.
1. 7
Learn to speak properly. Before you decide to start studying a foreign language to
be more sophisticated, ask yourself if you are already good enough in your first
language. Many people do not realize this but it is important to speak properly and
use correct grammar. Avoid using slang or cussing, those are signs of poor
education and culture.
1. 8
Have a good relationship with your parents. It is only a myth that the well-off
families are all dysfunctional. In order to present yourself as a sophisticated
young woman, try working on the relationship you have with your parents and
other relatives. You and your mother do not need to be like Rory and Lorelei
Gilmore but at least always be polite to each other and never ever fight in public.
The Elegant Sophisticated Woman
Who is the elegant sophisticated woman?
People often mistake sophistication for elegance. While it is possible to be both, you can be
sophisticated without being elegant and elegant without being sophisticated.

Elegance as we know is graciousness in action, and possessing a certain confident
simplicity.
Sophistication proceeds from a great deal of worldly experience and knowledge of fashion
and culture.
It comes from an in depth learning about your surroundings, having an refined
understanding of different cultures and being comfortable with luxury.
Sometimes sophistication can be vulgar.
We've all seen it before.
Especially when there is an over-emphasis on materials and luxury goods. As well as the
high life.
Women who dress up in too much bling, and overdoing the monogrammed designer goods.
Women who balk at flying economy class, pretending to hop off their private jet and being
rude to service staff.
Pretentious women who attempt to be sophisticated by rattling off their knowledge of
cuisine and restaurants, the magazines and books they've read that make them 'oh-so-
literary and sophisticated.'
After all that, I decided to write about the elegant sophistication that I want and love.
A Sophisticated Confidence
The Elegant Sophisticated Woman has a sort of 'Sophisticated Confidence'.
That means you can be confident and comfortable in a sophisticated situation, say dining in
a traditional Japanese restaurant with locals in Japan. Speaking about politics. Choosing
wines from a winelist. Discussing Italian art history. (Your own list goes on).
While you may not know everything, nothing really surprises you nor intimidates you. You
are open to venturing into the unknown tastebud and behaviour wise. You listen and are
engaged in learning about someone else's culture. You are not self-conscious - thinking and
fretting and sweating about yourself.
You'll also feel more beautiful when you train yourself for this sophisticated sense of
confidence.
It has been said that confidence is next to beauty that causes a woman to be appealing.
Confidence means you know how to act in any situation, making you sure of what you are
doing.
How do we get confident in _______ (fill in the blanks)?
It could be...
I. Playing tennis
II. Being comfortable on a first date
III. Speaking French
IV. Dressing up
V. Doing your Hair
VI. Being financially free
Here is the Secret to
Elegant Sophisticated Confidence:
Confidence only comes when you've done something over and over enough times
and made enough mistakes that you finally learn how to do it right.
Then you do it automatically and you don't have to think about it anymore -- that's
confidence.
Whatever you want to achieve, practice, practice, practice. Keep at it no matter how
frustrated you are.
The Elegant Sophisticated Woman:
Start By Looking Confident
While you are practicing and establishing your sophisticated confidence, you might as well
work on 'looking confident'.

No matter what they tell you about inner beauty, your first impression communicates who
you are to the world. If you don't create a confident impression, people will never know
whether you have inner beauty or not, if they don't feel compelled to know you better.
1. Practice Your Perfect Posture
2. Pay Attention To Your Grooming
3. Practice Eye Contact
Your posture tells the world how to treat you from sight alone. You can either look like
winner or a loser. Posture is the single most important body language there is. Erectness is
confident-looking. People will believe what your posture tells them about you.
For instance, if you tell a little boy to "act like a King", instantly you'll see him straighten his
back and his neck as though he were wearing a crown. You wonder who teaches them these
things!
Your posture communicates more than you know.
Psychologists say that the first indications that a person's morale is dropping when her daily
grooming habits slip.
Haven't we all seen girlfriends who have had their hearts broken not bothering with make
up anymore, letting themselves put on weight and the such? We've all watched television
shows which depict people in real life who have been told they've lost all their money? The
most educated groomed men starts to resemble the beggar on the street.
Eye contact is another indicator of confidence. Practice looking people directly in the eye as
it will help you establish a position of confidence in the minds of others.
Do not stare at their eyes or gaze into them. Look at their eyes when speaking, but be
natural. If you are opening your eyes more than normal, you are gazing!
