GSAP on Ageing and Health at
the 69th WHAGHC Policy Scrum
April 5th 2016
Presented by:Zoe Gray, Advocacy Manager [email protected]@ZoeJGray
Why is action on Ageing and Health
essential?
Ageing populations, yet inequity in life expectancy
People living longer not necessarily healthier
Those most in need tend to have less access to health services
Diversity, yet vulnerability to ill-health, attitude/ expectation of decline
Risk of marginalisation, isolation, discrimination
What needed? people-centred approach, ensuring equitable access, joined up approaches, ensuring older persons health and care needs are adequately addressed
Benefits: dignity, well-being, contributing tosociety, productivity, participation
GSAP: A welcome shift
Valuing, acknowledging role of older persons,
recognising diversity, promoting rights
Maximising functional abilities (intrinsic capacity +
enabling environment in broad sense)
Equitable access to health and supportive systems
which are responsive to older persons needs
(particularly conditions which significantly impact older
persons such as eye diseases/ sight loss, NCDs)
Ensuring appropriate integrated comprehensive multi-
sectoral health and long-term care approaches
Effort to align and complement SDGs, and
approaches/commitments on NCDs, disability etc.
