In 1999, our team was formed by only a handful of students with a background in off-road racing. Without any form of experience, this team started humbly creating Viking 33, the first Baja car designed at the Vehicle Research Institute. With the help of the renowned Dr. Michael Seal, the faculty advisor at the time, our team was on its way to becoming one of the finest teams in Baja. Today, the team has improved in all aspects. Everything from suspension, chassis, craftsmanship, and fabrication has been dramatically improved. From 93rd place in 2000, this team has progressed to 13th place in 2004 with Viking 36, 11th place in 2006 with Viking 41, and 13th overall last year in Illinois with Viking 42. The vehicles produced by the WWU Baja team are constantly being improved with the hope that in the next competition, first place is achievable.

The 2009 race season has brought many changes to the WSU Baja Team. The first change is adding a ton of new members. These new members bring just that many more great ideas to the team. Starting out to design the car, the team took on the mind set of simple but strong, just about everything has been completely redesigned. Starting with the frame, everything has been made simpler, easier to build, and stronger. However this doesn’t come free. There are always trade offs and weight is one of the biggest challenges as we go for this simple design.

The 2009 Wilkes Baja Team is made up of veteran seniors and a few new underclassmen. After building an entirely new car for 2008, the team has upgraded the drivetrain designs and optimized the suspension for better handling. The Wilkes Team will be making the long trip from Pennsylvania to Oregon for the Baja Oregon Competition. As always, the team would like to thank the Wilkes University Engineering Department and advisor Mitch Adams for their support.

The Wright State University Raiders have competed in eight previous Baja SAE competitions, most recently in 2007. The 2009 WSU Raiders team is a collaboration of five senior mechanical engineering students and two design projects. The 2009 vehicle is built around several key design elements; a lightweight frame maximizes the power-to-weight ratio of the vehicle, while a continuously variable transmission with chain and belt drive provides efficient power output through a simple and cost effective design. A fully independent suspension, utilizing front and rear A-arms, allows for excellent maneuverability and stability over demanding off-road terrain.
The team would like to thank the Dayton Section of SAE for sponsoring this year’s competition entry.

Announcing, SAE International JournalsDesigned for information sharing, visibility & greater recognition of authored papers
Mobility technology experts now have a new environment in which to present and promote scholarship. SAE’s annual, peer-reviewed collection of the best technical
papers/research in ground vehicle and aerospace engineering technology will be presented in seven topic-specifi c journal titles.
By partnering with HighWire Press, a division of Stanford University Libraries and host to 71 of the 200 most frequently-cited journals, SAE Journals will adopt the universally accepted format for paper citation and be available in print and online.
The new online format takes advantage of HighWire’s rich linking systems thereby facilitating academic research, discovery, and citation of SAE technical papers—increasing
authors’ eligibility for inclusion in the scientifi c community’s various indexes.
For more details, to purchase, or to learn of the information-sharing features afforded the online journals that provide for greater paper recognition, visit www.sae.org/journals.
Consider authorship of an SAE technical paper... and be considered by the worldwide scientifi c community.
