Westerly Conway “Hannah” Westerly Conway Original Spec General Remarks

The Conway is a very sturdy design and many of them can be found travelling the world. They were built when Westerly were coming to terms with laying up yachts in fibre glass and as such everything is almost like a wooden yacht with regards thickness of lay up etc. The fibreglass in some places is 2” -3” thick. You will find these yachts all over the world and they are no strangers to circumnavigations. This particular example is very clean both inside and out. She has been meticulously looked after by her owners who have put a lot of effort getting

Page 17 of 21 Pages

Page 18: Westerly Conway 36

Westerly Conway “Hannah” her ready for sale. For her age I doubt if you will find a better example of this yacht in England. The photographs in this document bears this out. She comes with a very good inventory of sails, her current main set ( Genoa, Main and Mizzen) were designed especially for her to a very detailed specification defined by myself and worked up together with Dolphin Sails ltd. She has an enormous amount of lockerage in all her cabins obviously designed for long self-contained comfortable ocean passages. I have been across the North Sea to Holland, Germany etc. many times with her and have never doubted the integrity of the yacht. In heavy weather she is easy to handle mainly due to the fact that one can dump the Main and just sail very comfortably on a furled Genoa and the mizzen. The large deep and safe centre cockpit is mainly dry in most weathers – it’s only the helmsman who gets wet because the crew tend to hide behind the windscreen and spray hood. Hannah has been laid up out of the water for about 7 years mainly because pressure of work getting in the way of sailing. We kept her on because the original intention was to sail her down to the Med when we retired and cruise around Greece and Turkey for 3-4 years. We were gradually refitting her with this in mind. Unfortunately my wife contracted osteo-arthritis in her knees and hands and is no longer up to long periods of sailing so we have decided, sadly, to sell her and bare boat charter in Greece and Turkey a couple of weeks every year. She will come with various bits and bobs that one accumulates with a yacht. E.g. Buckets mops warps, screws, wire, tape, sheets and in fact anything that I can find hanging around. There are also various bit’s and pieces for the engine (filters and belts etc.)

What I would do if I were buying her

• Update the electronics because time has moved on since the last lot were installed. The Radio would need to be updated to a DSC version, Fit a GPS plotter but keep the Garmin 65 as back up and possibly fit RADAR

Page 18 of 21 Pages

Page 19: Westerly Conway 36

Westerly Conway “Hannah” if you are going to seriously cruise the yacht in and around the North Sea and the Baltic.

• Remove the redundant electronics ( Decca and RDF, both of which are no longer in use)

• Replace the masthead unit and down cable for the VDO wind instruments. Unfortunately this unit is approx £500 but the instruments when they are working are superb. As stated earlier I do have a spare set of instruments that could be fitted in the navigation area as repeaters.

• Replace the wire halliards again with wire as they are getting on a bit now.

• Possibly replace the manual windlass with a nice Lofran’s electric windlass and put the Simpson Lawrence on the stern for the kedge.

That’s about all I can really think of about her, I will be very sad to see her go. But she will be a lovely sturdy, go anywhere, yacht for whoever buys her. D.W. Miles - owner
