It’s been quite a year. It began with the combining of two exceptional organizations – the Lake Wentworth Association and the Lake Wentworth Foundation – into the Wentworth Watershed Association. Both organizations were unique, yet guided by similar missions. Now, the Wentworth-Crescent Watershed community has been united with a single clear mission supported by our many donors, dedicated volunteers, and two part-time employees.
This first joint annual report shares highlights of the activities of our first year in both words and pictures. For example, we organized the Wolfeboro Water Summit in May, partnered with the New Hampshire Boat Museum on a landscaping by the water presentation in June, ran a canoe and kayak paddle to the Crescent Lake Dam in July, and partnered with The Nature Conservancy on a tour of Stamp Act Island in August.
And we have continued the important work of mitigating stormwater runoff in the watershed. The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services recently awarded the Association and the Town of Wolfeboro $50,000 for additional work to implement the
Wentworth-Crescent Watershed Management Plan. This Watershed Assistance Grant will fund stormwater mitigation projects along Route 109 and for shoreline and parking lot areas at Camp Bernadette. Combined with in-kind contributions of labor, materials, and volunteer effort from the Town and the Association, the grant has a total value of more than $100,000.
We hope to see you at future educational and member meetings. A second Wolfeboro Water Summit has already been scheduled for May 12, 2018, and there will be another Camp Dinner at the end of next summer. Be sure to check for updates at our website, wentworthwatershed.org. And, if you’re not already receiving it, you can sign up there for The Zephyr, our email newsletter.
This annual report is dedicated to all of our supporters and to the extremely valuable contributions they make that sustain us. We can’t do this without you. If you haven’t already become involved, please join us in the work to conserve, for our entire community, the valuable resources of the Wentworth-Crescent Watershed. Thank you!

Wolfeboro Water Summit increases understanding, develops practical solutions to preserve water quality.
Some 200 Wolfeboro-area residents attended the Wolfeboro Water Summit convened by the Wentworth Watershed Association on May 13 at the Great Hall of Wolfeboro Town Hall. At the session, Dr. Tom Ballestero, director of the UNH Stormwater Center, outlined the challenges confronting our water resources, both locally and globally, and discussed the strategies for managing stormwater to sustain water quality.
Don Kretchmer, a certified lake manager and the principal at DK Water Consulting, brought these issues home, articulating specific water challenges we face in Wolfeboro and in the watershed.
Sam Evans-Brown, acclaimed host of Outside/In on New Hampshire Public Radio, moderated a panel of local officials and nonprofit leaders who shared their insights and answered questions from the floor. The panel included Wolfeboro Director of Planning and Development Matt Sullivan, Wolfeboro Public Works Director David Ford, Wolfeboro Conservation Commission Chair Dan Coons, Lake Winnipesaukee Association Executive Director Pat Tarpey, and Wentworth Watershed Association Executive Director Bob Cole.
The summit highlighted that Wolfeboro’s economy is highly dependent on the quality of its water, both for human consumption and for recreational use. Attendees learned that improving water quality will require a deep commitment from Wolfeboro residents, businesses, town officials, and local conservation nonprofits.

– for supporting the conservation work of the Wentworth Watershed Association in this our first full year. Your membership fees and donations to the Annual Fund provide the foundation for all our activities and projects, as well as for our office and operations.
Your donations demonstrate your love for Lake Wentworth, Crescent Lake and their tributaries, as well as your understanding of our shared work to maintain the beauty of the landscape and the clarity of the water.
Those who have seen the weedwatchers, water testers and dive team battling milfoil and other invasives know that your donations allow them to hire testing and treatment professionals, to rent the DASH unit, and to buy scuba equipment to help with underwater eradication operations.
Others have seen our Land Stewardship Committee monitoring our many properties and conservation easements. Protection of these lands, which cleanse these tributaries and lakes, is funded by your donations.
Those who attended meetings in our new office or helped with events know our funds are focused on conservation. Vital remediation projects around the watershed are diverting storm water runoff, the major threat to our water quality, thanks to funds from the state, town and all of you.
I am so proud to have met and worked with our Development Committee and all the Wentworth Watershed Association members who have pitched in to build community and conserve our beloved lakes and lands.
Thank you!

ANNUAL FUND
CONSERVING LAKES AND LANDS
This year sees the completion of Phase II of the Wentworth-Crescent Watershed Management Plan, a partnership of the Wentworth Watershed Association and the Town of Wolfeboro.
The first phase of the plan, completed in 2012 with some $70,000 in Watershed Assistance Grant funds from the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services and the federal Environmental Protection Agency, identified more than 100 sites around the watershed in need of attention because of stormwater runoff problems.
The second and current phase, which ends in December, won an additional $120,000 of Watershed Assistance Grant funding in 2014 and is aimed at beginning remediation of some of the most significant sources of stormwater runoff along the watershed’s lakes and streams.
Capping the partnership between the Town and Association, this year also saw the award of another WAG grant, in the amount of $50,000, to expand the effort to control stormwater runoff into our surface waters. That work is expected to start next year and be completed in 2019.
The watershed management plan has established a goal of reducing phosphorus levels in Lake Wentworth and Crescent Lake by 15 percent over a period of 10 years. The three Watershed Assistance Grants from DES and the EPA represent almost a quarter of a million dollars in state and federal funding for pollution-mitigation projects in the watershed, supplemented by an almost equal amount of cash and in-kind services from the Association and the Town.
The stormwater detention basin at the back of the Auto Care Plus property. The block structure directs overflow to a lower structure
that slows and spreads the water so that its impact is lessened.
Auto Care Plus easement signing
Phase II: Watershed Assistance Grants further Wentworth-Crescent Watershed Management Plan
The Three Components of Phase II:
1 The area adjacent to Fernald Brook behind the Auto Care Plus property,
where large impervious parking areas had been collecting stormwater and allowing it to flow towards the brook. Auto Care Plus owners Karen and John Manelas granted a conservation easement this year to the Town of Wolfeboro, allowing construction of two large basins that let stormwater and snowmelt collect and then infiltrate into the ground rather than flowing to the brook. This element of the grant project is now completed and is functioning as planned.
2 The Gene’s Beach area off Route 109. While allowing continued recreational use
of the beach, work undertaken by the Town will install drainage structures intended to intercept stormwater running off the roadway before it can run across the beach, where it erodes sand and carries salt, oil, and other pollutants into the water. Also addressed is a section of beach at Wentworth State Park, where a rain garden will intercept runoff that has been eroding the shoreline. These elements of the project are expected to be completed by early November.
3 The design and permitting of a series of stormwater treatment structures to
handle runoff from South Main Street prior to discharge into Crescent Lake. The runoff not only carries pollutants directly into the lake but is causing severe erosion problems for landowners along South Main. This component of the plan will be complete by the end of the year.

WENTWORTH WATERSHED ASSOCIATION Annual Report 201710 7
ANNUAL MEETING
Ellen Berry and Claire and Wally Vaughn were recognized for their exemplary, long-term volunteer work in the watershed. The three were honored with certificates of appreciation and an opportunity to tour the lakes with Bob Spear, operator of Lake Wentworth Tours and More. The Association also approved the slate of Association trustees, and elected Jay H. “Jerry” Calvert, Jr. as a new trustee.
Calvert is a senior counsel with Morgan Lewis of Philadelphia. A seasoned litigator, he handles matters involving antitrust, intellectual property, and securities law, along with healthcare and regulatory issues. His clients range from global enterprises in the airline, banking and pharmaceutical fields to those in the oil, healthcare, life sciences, and electric utility industries. A former managing partner of Morgan Lewis, Calvert has also served as a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and manager of its Litigation Practice. Currently, he is a member of several nonprofit boards, including The Zoological Society of Philadelphia. He and his wife, Ann, have a home in North Wolfeboro.
Rose Marie Rogers, a longtime watershed resident, raised important questions about erosion, boat launching, and storm water
management near her home on Route 109, east of the State Park.
President Anne Blodget with Wally and Claire Vaughn, who were honored for their exemplary volunteer work through the years.
They were watershed representatives for the Governor’s Landing area and Wally was critical in the fight against milfoil.
Tom Ouhrabka and Skip Oliver give an informative presentation on the latest efforts by the dive team to control the spread of milfoil. They praised the
efforts of the many dive volunteers.
Watershed reps Joyce Pepin and Hugh Crawford discussed Hersey Shore and Moose Point outreach.
Peter Galanis congratulates Ellen Berry who for many years has been a staunch supporter of efforts to control milfoil in the lake, demonstrating an early and prescient
understanding of the extent to which milfoil would become an issue for local lakes. She also was an active long-time watershed representative on Holden Shore.
At the Wentworth Watershed Association’s annual meeting held on August 19, members heard updates on land stewardship and management of invasive species.
At the annual meeting it was announced that Bob Cole, Executive Director, planned to retire this fall. President Anne Blodget thanked Cole for his service, noting his efforts during the combining of the Lake Wentworth Association and the Lake Wentworth Foundation into the Wentworth Watershed Association, and for his leadership on the Warren Brook Campaign to preserve nearly 200 acres along Warren Brook with a conservation easement.

WOLFEBORO WATER SUMMIT
A second Wolfeboro Water Summit has been set for May 12, 2018,

WENTWORTH WATERSHED ASSOCIATION Annual Report 20172 15
MEMBER LIST
Thank you!
HELLO
