Information on Roto Roto has been in creation since 2014, when we recognised that whilst VR allows us the freedom to do amazing things, in the real world, most people would probably prefer to sit down while doing it. So, we set out to solve the problems of exploring and experiencing 360-degree content whilst seated. What games does Roto work with? Good question! Roto adds immersion to all types of games and experiences. Its headtracking features enables comfortable viewing in 360 degrees, and the rumble packs provide haptic feedback based on the audio from the game. The chair also has lots of other features, such as touch pedals underneath each foot, however these will need developer support before being able to use them. While setting up your chair, please find the top 5 games and top 5 experiences that we think are amazing on Roto (you can even start downloading them so they’re ready when you’re done!) Top 5 Games Star Wars: Squadrons Half-Life: Alyx Boneworks Serious Sam Elite Dangerous Top 5 Experiences Google Earth Apollo 11 Jurassic World Blue Nature Treks VR Nat Geo VR You are able to see the rest of our recommendations on our experiences page here.

Quick tip before you carry on! We would recommend putting the headtracker on charge at the mains by using cable N now so that it can charge while you are setting the rest of the chair up. You can find the cable in box 4 (small brown box inside box 1).

Main PCB Installation

We do have a handy little installation guide, which can be seen here, but should you wish for a little extra help, keep on reading!

Step 1 • Remove the PCB from Box 4 (Box 4 is included in Box 1 – it is a small brown box)

Step 2 • Installation

1) Turn the base fully upside down 2) Unscrew the U-shaped bracket from the base – this has Philips screws on, so a

matching screwdriver will be required. 3) Slide the PCB in next to the current box – they both have a ridge on them for the

bracket, so make sure that these are the right way round (you’ll want the ridges facing up towards you).

4) Plug the cables from the cable magazine into the back of the PCB 5) Line the two boxes up, ensuring the ridge mentioned before is aligned, and screw

the U-shaped bracket back into place. The PCB does sit back a bit further than the edge of the base, so don’t worry if they look like they are pushed inwards.

Cable Setup

The website has a range of videos dedicated to setting up the wires, and if you wish to view them, please click here while following the below instructions.

Cables A-E These are all the cables you will need to ensure that the control box and rumble are connected. You can see a video for all of these cables here.

Cable A – This is the power cable for the control box. One end will need to be plugged into the middle port on the back of the control box, in between ‘Rum 1’ and ‘Rum 2’ port. Then run the cable underneath the seat, between the seat bottom and the metal plate and plug it into the power port on the top right of the cable magazine. Cable B – This is the power cable for the rumble on the back of the seat. This will need to be run between the seat and the plate, much like cable A, and plugged into ‘Rum 1’ port. The cable does look like it won’t reach, but it does – it ensures that there are no very loose cables. Cable C – This is the power cable for the rumble on the bottom of the seat. Similarly to cable B, this will need to run between the seat and the plate, and plug into the ‘Rum 2’ port. Cable D – This is the micro-USB to USB cable for side A of the control box. Plug the small part into the top middle port on the control box, and run the cable to the cable magazine, where it will need to go into the USB port titled ‘A’. Cable E - This is the micro-USB to USB cable for side B of the control box. Plug the small part into the top middle port on the control box, and run the cable to the cable magazine, where it will need to go into the USB port titled ‘B’.

Cable F This is the data cable for the pedals. It is a micro-USB to USB connection. The larger part of the cable will need to sit in the right-hand side of side A on the control box. This is labelled ‘Pedal/Emergency’. The smaller part of the cable will run down the stem and plug into the pedals. As the Roto pedals currently require developer support, they will not be needed when you first set up, so you can skip this cable if you want to – keeping cables to a minimum is best.

Cables G & H Cable G – This is a blue splitter cable that you will need to use in order to get rumble to work from the headset to the Roto. Please see the Headset Setup section (pages 12-13) for information on how to get rumble working with your headset Cable H – This is a long male to male aux cable, to be used in conjunction with the control box and cable G in order to get rumble working with the Roto. Please see the Headset Setup section (pages 12-13) for information on how to get rumble working with your headset

Cable I & J Cable I – This is a data cable, it looks like a printer cable. It runs from the left-hand side of the base into a USB port on your PC. Cable J – This is the power cable attached to the block that would have been included in a small brown box inside box 1. The end of the cable will need to be plugged in to the left of the switch on the base, and the mains plug will need to be plugged in to the other side of the block. If you plug this in and switch Roto on, a light on the left-hand side of the base should switch on.

Cables K – M These are cables that connect the base to your PC. They are set up in different ways, depending on the headset, so please check the Headset Setup section later on, in case your headset requires a different set up. Cable K – This is a HDMI cable, that runs from the base to your PC. Please ensure that this is plugged in to your graphics card, as it will run better through there. Cable L – This is a USB cable that runs from the base to your PC. Cable M – Cable M is a power cable that is only required if you are using the HTC Vive. This runs from the base into the link box.

Cable N This is the cable that runs from the ‘Emergency’ side of side A on the control box into the emergency stop button that sits in the arm of the chair. This is a micro-USB cable and can also be used to charge the headtracker. Should you wish to charge the headtracker with it, we’d recommend plugging it into the mains, via a USB wall plug.

Cable O Cable O is used to power steering wheels. We use the Thrustmaster T150 Asia edition, and the power socket is in the back of the steering wheel. One end of the cable will need to be plugged in to the steering wheel, and the other in the power port on the front of the control box.

Control Box Information

Side A In side A of the control box, we have two ports designated for charging, and two ports for pedals and the emergency stop button. These are labelled on the control box, and can be seen in the image below.

Side B On side B of the control box, there are only 3 ports. The one on the right-hand side can only read keyboards and mouse inputs, and the ones on the left are used for inputting the headset, sound card, and any controllers. There may not be enough space on the left-hand side of side B. Should this occur, a USB hub can be plugged in, and the extra USBs ran through there. This is not included in the box.

Headset Setup

All of the headsets set up and work a little differently to each other, and the guide below should help set these up. You can contact the team at [email protected] if you are experiencing any issues and they will be able to help.

HTC Vive Setup For the Vive to work with Roto, you will need to use the Vive Link Box. Cables K, L and M will need to be plugged into the base of the Roto, and the other ends plugged in to the link box. You will then need to add the cables provided with the link box to the other side and connect it to the mains/PC. For the headset itself, the power cable will need to sit in the top left port in the stem of the chair, the HDMI cable will need to sit in the HDMI port at the bottom of the stem, and as the cable for the Vive isn’t quite long enough, you’ll need to pop the USB extender on to the USB cable of the headset, before it is plugged into the top left port on side B of the control box. Once this is done, ensure that the sensors are plugged in and visible to the headset. We recommend loading Steam VR to ensure that everything is being picked up and visible. Rumble To set up rumble, take apart the two cables that run on the headset (the curly cable, and the aux cable from the front), and intercept it with cable G. In the empty part of cable G, you will need to plug in cable H, and feed it to the aux port on the front of the control box. Turning the dial on the control box to switch it on should start rumble working.

Oculus Rift CV1 Setup To set this up, you will need to ensure that the HDMI cable is plugged in to the stem of the chair, and the USB cable is plugged in to the top left port on side B of the control box. Cables K and L will need to be plugged into the base, and run through to the PC When the chair is switched on, the image should appear, however if it is not clear, remove the HDMI cable, add the HDMI repeater, and plug it back in. Switching the base on and off resets all the connections to the chair, and the picture should be clear.

14

Rumble To activate the rumble feature with the Rift CV1, the USB sound card needs to be connected into the bottom left-hand USB port on Side B of the control box. It’s a little fiddly to get the sound card in, but they do both fit. You will then need to plug cable H into the front of the Control Box (this small socket is located just to the left of the large silver dial in the center), and the other end of the audio cable needs to connect into the headphone socket of the USB sound card. From there, turn the large dial on the front of Control Box clockwise all the way up to help with testing (the red light should be on). Once the above is set up, you then need to set your PC to output the audio to both the USB Sound Card and to the Oculus headset.

Oculus Quest/Quest 2/Go Setup The Oculus Quest, Quest 2 and Oculus Go are free-standing headsets that does not require any connections to the stem. The only thing required to make the chair work with these headsets is the headtracker. Rumble To connect the rumble, you will need to plug cable G into the front of the control box. Into the two ports, the audio cable for the headset (cable H), and the audio cable for the headphones will need to go in there. Once the dial is turned up on the control box, and the headset volume turned up, the rumble will work. Note The Quest 2 link cable currently works on a USB-C connection, something our control box does not currently support – we are working on upgrading this, however in the meantime, you can still enjoy all the content available directly stored on your headset.

New/Future Generation When the Roto was first designed 6 years ago, headsets were not built with updated connections like the display port. If you wish to use headsets like the HTC Vive Pro, Oculus Rift S or Valve Index, a battery powered laptop will be required atop our desktop attachment. The headset will need to be running through the laptop, however the chair will still turn with the headtracker attached. We are currently working on an upgrade to the cable magazine, which we hope to have available for purchase soon. Please keep an eye on the website for all the latest information.

Headtracker Set Up and Information

Set Up Once the chair has been set up and is powered on, you can pair the headtracker with the base by switching the headtracker on with the power button in the middle of the headtracker. When the headtracker is on, pushing the button on the side of the headtracker will put it into headtracking mode. Pushing this button at the same time as the headtracking button on the base will pair them together. Colour Coding The headtracker has a range of colours to denote what is currently happening with it. Flashing blue – ready to pair/ tracking mode activated Flashing green – paired Flashes blue then red on start-up – battery low Flashing red – low battery/charging (when plugged in) Solid green – charged If the headtracker is showing a solid blue, please pop it on charge for a few seconds, as this will reset it for you. If you are seeing the headtracker flashing red when charging and flashing green once it’s charged, it will be worth making sure that the headtracker is not paired to another Bluetooth device close to it. Headtracking Mode Once the headtracker has been paired and put on the headset, you can then enter headtracking mode. To do this, ensure that you are sat on the seat, facing directly forwards. From there, push the pairing button once (it doesn’t need to be a long hold), and listen for two beeps. Only when the two beeps have stopped can you turn your head. If you do it before, the calibration will be out. Please see the troubleshooting section if this does happen to you.

Accessories Setup & Recommended Accessories Your accessories set has come in Box 3. Please note that this does not include the steering wheels/HOTAS controllers, but the parts in which to mount them to the chair. Side Tables Out of all the accessories, this is the easiest to set up. The side tables have a metal part on each that slot into a specifically designed area on the armrests. Coming down so that your eye level is in line with the arm makes the hole easier to see. There is a lever on the bottom that you will need to pull down when inserting the arm into the chair. This lever has a post on it, which slots into a hole in the side table, ensuring that it cannot be pulled or moved while gaming. To remove the side table, pull and hold the same lever down and slide the side table out of the armrest. Racing Pack It’s worth noting that the racing pack will only work with those headsets that can be wired through the chair (sorry Oculus Quest/Go users!). To attack the racing pack to the chair, you will first need to pop off the cover on the front of the foot pedals. You will then need to insert the bottom pole (it has a ridge along it and is the shorter of the two) into the hole. Please ensure that this is pushed in fully. There is a small cover just behind the pedals that will need to be removed, and the pole can then be screwed in place. The pole will then need the right-angle bracket attaching on to it (this is the one with the hinge closing). Once it is in the desired place, two screws will need to be inserted to hold it in place. The pedal board will then need to be placed on the end of the pole and screwed into place. Into the right-angle bracket, the longer pole will need to slide into the top and be screwed in place. Pulling the handle out will allow you to slot the top table in, and the racing pack will be ready for your steering wheel and pedals to be mounted on it! If you would like to see this done in a video, please click here.

17

Desktop attachment Setting up the desktop attachment is very similar to the racing pack. You will need to input the bar into the front of the chair, and screw it in. The right-angled hinge attachment will also need to be added and screwed in place. The long bar will need to be added and screwed in, and instead of adding the smaller steering wheel table, the desktop will need to be slotted into the top.

Recommended Accessories Joysticks The office’s favourites for joysticks is the Thrustmaster T16000M. These are smooth joysticks, that feel natural to use. They are shaped well, and sit nicely on the Roto sidetables, giving you that level of immersion you may not find elsewhere. The Thrustmaster Warthog joysticks have also been recommended and used with the chair, but these are much bulkier than the T16000M. Steering Wheels Thrustmaster T150 Asia Edition This is the steering wheel that works best with Roto. It has force feedback, upgradeable firmware, as well as downloadable drivers, so that your wheel will always be up to date. When getting steering wheels, we would highly recommend this. The other steering wheels below will work with Roto, however you may not have as much freedom with these than with the T150. Logitech G27 This is one of Logitech’s older models, which is now no longer sold by them in favour of their G29 and G920 models. Using USB, it sits well on our racing pack. Logitech G29 If you’re not able to get your hands on the G27, the G29 has the same specs and internal design, so will work just as well with Roto. It was just given an update to modernise it Logitech G920 The G920 is a further upgrade to the previous wheels, and like the others, connects via USB and has force feedback, great for immersing you in the seat of your next racing car.

Operating the Roto

By this point, you should have your chair all set up and ready to go, but there’s a few other things you need to know:

Tilting Do you like to kick back and relax while gaming? The back of the chair on Roto can be reclined slightly, allowing you to immerse yourself in that getaway holiday VR experience just a little bit more.

Emergency Stop There are two ways that the chair can be stopped in an emergency. Firstly, using the emergency stop button. This will cut the connection to the motor, and the chair will not turn. If the emergency stop button is used, the chair will need to be reset at the base by flicking the switch on and off. The second way to stop the chair in an emergency is to take the headset off. This cuts the connection between the IR sensor on the headtracker, and the user’s head. The chair will still be powered on but the headtracker will no longer be in headtracking mode. In both instances, the headtracker will need to be recalibrated, as described in the headtracker setup section.

Page 19: Welcome to your new Roto!

19

Troubleshooting You’ve got everything plugged in and ready to go, but there’s one little problem that isn’t quite right? Check below to see if they’ve got a fix for it. If not, please contact the team on [email protected] and they’ll be able to get you fully up and running. Calibration Off If the chair is turning when you are looking straight forward, or you have to turn your head quite far to be able to turn the chair, it could be that the calibration is off. To reset it, you can do a couple of things. The easiest one would be to take the headset off – this breaks the connection with the IR sensor and will take the chair out of headtracking mode, so that it does not turn if you were to get off the chair. From there, make sure that the user is sat in the chair facing straight forwards, and push the button on the side of the headtracker again to put it back into headtracking mode. The user must wait until the two beeps have stopped before turning their head. Any movement before will throw off the calibration of the headtracker. Picture Not Clear If you’ve plugged the headset in correctly and the picture is showing up with green lines, red dots, or is just not clear? You will need to add the HDMI repeater to the chair. Pull the HDMI cable for the headset out of the stem, add the repeater to the end of the cable, and plug it back into the stem again. From there, you will need to reset the base by flicking the switch off and on again, as this resets all the connections in the chair. Should this not help, please get in touch and we will be able to assist you further. Devices Not Registering Once the headset has been set up, it’s worth opening Steam VR, as this will bring up the small headset screen at the bottom. If the device is detecting the points (HTC Vive/Rift CV1) but the device isn’t showing as registering, it’s worth plugging the headset directly into the PC to ensure that all of the connections work. If it registers on the PC, it is then worth moving each cable over one by one, ensuring that the connection comes back up after each cable is moved. You may also need to restart your PC/Steam VR, as well as the chair, as resetting connections can also help in detecting the headset. Should this not work, please contact us and we can look into this further for you.

Roto VR Desktop Mode

The Roto VR Desktop Mode has been created so that the chair can operate and turn while being controlled by joysticks or steering wheels, therefore eliminating the need for the headtracker. It also contains cockpit mode, which is great to use when in racing games, or flight simulation games. To receive the desktop application, please contact the team at [email protected], who will be more than happy to get this sent over to you. Downloading the file The Desktop app comes as a .zip file, which will require a programme such as WinRAR to be able to open it. Once you have the file downloaded and unzipped, you will need to open the file and head to the following locations: PC Suite -> Roto PC Suite -> rotoVR_Demo.exe

Page 21: Welcome to your new Roto!

©Roto VR is a UK Ltd company. Companies House: 9473421. VAT Reg: 241423444. 28 Church Road, Stanmore, Middlesex, HA7 4XR, United Kingdom www.rotovr.com

21

When you open the file, the desktop app will look like this:

Using Cockpit Mode To use cockpit mode, please ensure that the joystick or steering wheel is connected before opening the app – this ensures that the app picks up the correct joystick, enabling you to turn in the chair easier. You will then need to click on ‘Cockpit Mode’ on the left-hand side. When doing so, the box will turn orange (please see below photo for this). To get the chair to turn by using the joystick instead of the headtracker, you will need to ensure that ‘Enable Joystick Control’ is ticked (this can be found in the middle of the app, beneath ‘Free Mode’). Once this is done, the chair will rotate 30 degrees to the left and right of your start point.

Page 22: Welcome to your new Roto!

22

Using Free Mode Free mode can be used when you wish to control the direction of the chair with your joystick, but do not wish to be restricted to the 30 degrees movement like in cockpit mode. This will be set up the same way, but you will need to click on the ‘Free Mode’ box (as shown in the picture below), as well as ‘Enable Joystick Control’.

Page 23: Welcome to your new Roto!

23

Dead Zone and Power The last part of the desktop app that is of note here is the dead zone and power settings. With the dead zone, this can be used if the chair is turning while the joystick is not in use. Should you find that this is happening, please raise the dead zone up to 20/30 and this should stop the chair turning when it shouldn’t be turning but will not affect your gameplay. The power setting is the speed that the chair will turn. When using cockpit mode, we recommend that the power is set to 100% for realistic short turns while gaming.
