4 Weddington • North Carolina
The Town of Weddington sits in the northwestern corner ofUnion County. It was in 1842 that the General Assembly ofNorth Carolina formed Union County by taking portions fromthe existing counties of Mecklenburg and Anson. Weddingtonis part of the Sandy Ridge Township, which owes its lineage tothe old militia districts which existed prior to 1869. The towncenter is located at the intersection of NC 16, also known asProvidence Road, and NC 84. Our section of Union Countywas known from the earliest colonial times for its fertilefarmland. The Waxhaw Indians had prospered here for agesby the time the first settlers from Germany, England, Wales, and Scotland began arriving. To understand the beginnings ofour community you have to go back to the post AmericanRevolution period, when a veteran of the war for independ-ence, Reuben Boswell, helped settle this area.
Reuben Boswell was born in 1755 and was a nativeof Spotsylvania County, Virginia. After serving in theRevolutionary War, he moved to Mecklenburg County. In thesummer of 1824, Reuben donated four acres of land for whatwould become the Sandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church.Local farmers, 22 in all, donated $262.00 for the construction ofthe new house of worship. The establishment of this churchwould eventually lead to the town we know today. In time,Reuben Boswell’s daughter married a man named Weddingtonand in 1826, a grandson, Reuben B. Weddington arrived. For the next sixty years, Reuben B. Weddington grew, lived, and prospered in the area.
The decades passed and Union County shared in writing thehistory of our nation, providing a number of troops for theMexican War in 1846, and an even higher number, twelvecompanies in all, for the War Between the States from 1861through 1865. During Reconstruction, Union County sufferedeconomically due to fewer markets for the cotton grownhere, but as the years passed, the future was looking brighter, especially with the completion of the railroad in 1874. By 1890,Reuben B. Weddington was a prominent citizen of the area andhelped to construct a new church building on the land that hisgrandfather had previously donated. This, along with his othergenerous financial gifts to the church, and the school that thechurch operated, led the members to change the name fromSandy Ridge Methodist Episcopal Church to WeddingtonMethodist Church. The community that continued to grow uparound this house of worship took its name and that is howWeddington was first put officially on the map.
The Town of Weddington continued to grow through the turnof the century. Weddington Academy taught grades 1 through11 and by 1918 had expanded to become the WeddingtonIndustrial Institute. The school burned in 1925, was rebuilt, and burned again in 1934. Again rebuilt, Weddington Schooloperated until 1975 when it finally closed due to low enroll-ment. At the time of its closing: there were approximately 67students. Six grades shared 3 classrooms and 3 teachers. Afterclosing, Weddington students were sent to Wesley Chapel andthen on to Sun Valley High School until in 1996 when thepresent Weddington Elementary was built as the first of a 3school complex on Deal Road.

Through the War to End All Wars, the Roaring twenties, the GreatDepression, Pearl Harbor, the birth of “rock and roll”, turmoil in the1960’s, landing on the moon, and the Bicentennial most of NorthCarolina, and our part of Union County, remained largely agricultural.Family farms, two lane roads and a “long drive” to Charlotte were thenorm. But with the 1970’s and Charlotte’s growth, it wasn’t longbefore farmlands would begin giving way to new subdivisions andthose two lane, farm to market roads carried increased traffic. Farmingequipment and tractors were replaced by SUV’s and “Beamers”.
Weddington was no stranger to this new growth, but something wasdifferent here, the residents were proud of their rural atmosphere and“down home” feel. The leaders of the community wanted to ensurethe things which made Weddington unique were preserved for thefuture, and with the prospect of possible annexation by the Cityof Charlotte looming, local residents took action. The process ofpetitioning the NC General Assembly for official incorporation beganin earnest.
NC House Representative Joe Hudson, Weddington native, introducedHouse Bill 597, AN ACT TO INCORPORATE THE TOWN OFWEDDINGTON IN UNION COUNTY. The town charter establishedthe original boundaries of the Town and appointed Mark Teal, our firstMayor, along with four other council members. The act becameeffective upon ratification on May 2, 1983.
Much has changed about Weddington since 1983, but one thingremains certain, our Town remains committed to keeping the spiritand character of Weddington alive for those who are here now, andfor those who come after us.
Union County was formed in 1842 from Anson and
Mecklenburg counties. At the time the county was formed
there was a dispute between local Whigs and Democrats
as to whether it should be named Clay or Jackson. The
name Union was suggested and adopted as a compromise
because the new county was created from parts of two
others. It is in the south central section of the State
and is bounded by the state of South Carolina and
Mecklenburg, Cabarrus, Stanly and Anson counties.
