Volume 11April 2016
Welcome By Chelsea Panos
Greetings from the Colorado School of Mines (CSM) section of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE): a group of energetic, empowered young engineers who are ready to leave their legacies in the world of STEM! As the largest collegiate section in the nation, the CSM SWE section has experienced phenomenal growth over the last few years, budding from 480 members in 2012 to over 725 members today. We are proud of our success and thankful to have dedicated corporate sponsors in supporting such a growing and diverse membership.
Fittingly, the 2015 to 2016 school year’s theme was “Grow with SWE.” Through this theme, we not only encouraged the growth of our membership, but the growth of the personal and professional lives of each individual member. The “Grow with SWE” theme was perpetuated through social events, such as painting flowerpots during ‘dead day’; community service, such as monthly visits to a local food bank; and weekly
lunch meetings, where diverse industry professionals shared their own unique stories of growth.
At Mines, SWE is a source of pride, learning, and community, and as the President of such an outstanding organization, I invite you to enjoy the stories highlighted in this newsletter keeping in mind that none of it would be possible without the generous and ongoing support of women at Mines!

SWE OUTREACHBy Emily Wong
The Colorado School of Mines SWE section has had a very successful outreach year. We have added a popular monthly outreach event at the Food Bank of the Rockies, which gives our members a great opportunity to participate in a recurring volunteer activity. We greatly value our community and view our outreach as a way to make a positive impact on the STEM futures of young children. We’ve been very active in volunteering for science fair judging and math and science nights at local elementary and middle schools. SWE has also participated in mentoring a girls engineering club at a local high school. A new change this year was the accessible tracking of volunteer hours which lets our members not only realize the impact of their volunteering, but also allows them to utilize these numbers on their resume. As of March 1st, our SWE members have dedicated 880 hours of volunteering to their community.
WELCOME BACK BBQBy Chelsea Panos
On Tuesday, September 1st, the Society of Women Engineers hosted the annual Welcome Back BBQ to welcome past and new members to a brand new school year and a fun, new year of SWE! Attendees had the opportunity to network with each other as well as Xcel representatives who generously sponsor the event each year. Many people participated in a bingo card ice breaker in which they had to collect signatures to fill unique bingo squares such as “someone who is a twin” or “a male SWE member.” This game encouraged attendees to mingle with each other as well as meet the SWE officers and Xcel representatives. Overall, the BBQ was a successful networking and recruitment event!
FACULTY ICE CREAM SOCIAL By Jessica Lesser
Success at Mines is due in part to the incredible faculty and staff members. In order to thank them for their wonderful work, SWE hosts a Faculty Ice Cream Social every fall. Students get to nominate the faculty members they would like to see in attendance. During the meeting, faculty and students get to converse and play fun Mines related trivia while enjoying a large variety of delicious ice cream and toppings.

GIRL SCOUT ENGINEERING DAYBy Angela Dang
October 7, 2015 marked another successful Girl Scout Engineer-ing Day. This year’s theme was “Bridge the Gap,” referring to the small but growing fraction of female engineers. About 50 SWE volunteers guided more than 150 girls through activities that explored various topics in STEM, from chemistry to geology. The day incorporated classic experiments from years prior like the “Asphalt Cookies” and “Lava Lamps,” as well as new activities like “Build A Column” and “Just Code It.” Girl Scout Engineering Day continues to be our biggest outreach event and an exciting and rewarding venue for our members to share their love for STEM with aspiring female scientists and engineers.
GIRLS LEAD THE WAYBy Alex Flanagan
Girls Lead the Way is a conference for 9th through 12th grade girls with the purpose of getting more girls interested in and familiar with STEM fields. At the conference, held February 6th at Mines, all the girls rotated between three general morning sessions, which touched on preparation for college, dressing professionally, and an overview of several majors offered at Mines. After lunch the girls split up to do hands-on activities that matched their interests indicated during registration. Nine activities were offered which included programming simple robots, aluminum sand casting, creating simple prosthetic hands, learning to use surveying equipment, and much more.
CONTINUUM By Jennifer Brush
The Continuum was founded in 1999 by a SWE member and has endured as one of Mines’ greatest traditions celebrating the hard work and effort of graduating women. The ceremony, which brings together families, friends, and CSM community members the Wednesday before Commencement, concludes with the presentation of a rose and a CSM vase to each graduating woman in recognition of their success and contribution to the tradition of women at Mines.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES By Hanna Flamme
Our SWE section holds several social events for members to meet one another and interact in a fun environment. In the fall, we held freshman and sophomore class
socials where students were treated to dinner, Pixar movies, and coloring activities. Another social event we held was the officer winter social and gift exchange. This event took place at the Denver Zoo Lights and allowed our officers to have fun and celebrate the end of the semester. Additionally, we held our annual Halloween Party with a pumpkin decorating contest, Holiday Cookie party with an ugly sweater contest, and a Valentine’s Day Cookie Party. At all of these events, our members were able to take a break from homework and network with other members.
DEAD DAY EVENT By Claire Mahoney
Each semester on Dead Day, a no class day before finals week, SWE hosts an event to help members de-stress in preparation for their final exams. This year’s CSM SWE theme was “Grow with SWE,” so SWE members painted terracotta pots in which to grow their own plants. Forty of Mines’ women engineers let their creativity flow, and at the end of the night, went home with a souvenir of their Dead Day Event and a clear mind ready to take on final exams. A similar event will be hosted on Dead Day in the spring semester.
NETWORKING RECEPTIONBy Courtney Bone
SWE hosted its annual Networking Reception on February 8th, the evening before CSM’s Spring Career Fair. This year’s Networking Reception had a wonderful turnout with over 50 representatives from 25 different companies. This was attended by over 60 SWE and Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP) members. The reception was an excellent opportunity for members to practice networking skills and make connections with company recruiters. The evening was an overwhelming success.
FLORENCE CALDWELL SCHOLARSHIPBy Diana Tamayo
The Florence Caldwell scholarship is an annual scholarship created in honor of the first woman to graduate from the Colorado School of Mines. The scholarship honors SWE members for their outstanding work and contribution to the organization. The recipients for the 2015-2016 school year were Alex Flanagan, Jennifer Jacobs, Melissa Mitton, and Jessica Rivera.
SWE NATIONAL CONFERENCE By Shae Quigley
The SWE Annual Conference, WE15, was held in Nashville, TN from October 22nd-24th. Professional and collegiate members from all across the world attended this conference to network and come together as one solid, powerful unit. Our SWE section sent nine SWE members and one faculty advisor. The conference included inspiring speakers, seminars for personal and professional development, a giant career fair, and much, much more. The conference concluded with Celebrate SWE, a beautiful evening dinner and awards reception.
SWE REGIONAL CONFERENCE By Macy Kiel
The 2016 Region i Conference “be BOLDer” was held February 26th-28th in Boulder, Colorado and was attended by 14 CSM SWE members. Friday night featured a scavenger hunt and welcome reception with a graduate student gathering, trivia, and poster competition. Saturday’s events began with a breakfast keynote address from motivational speaker Kari Fauber, followed by sessions that ranged from technical presentations to outreach ideas to professional development, all while having a small career fair to visit during breaks. At the banquet on Saturday night, our SWE section received the Region i Invested Award (Existing Program of the Year) for our Girl Scout Engineering Day Program.
OFFICER RETREATBy Chelsea Panos
At the end of the first two weeks of classes, the SWE Executive Board got together on a Saturday morning to participate in a SWE Officer Retreat. During the retreat, 20 of the SWE officers participated in a rock climbing party at a local climbing gym. Whether a seasoned climber, or a first timer, everyone participated and achieved something they hadn’t done before. The event was a great time for officer bonding as officers encouraged each other to try more difficult routes and to reach the top of the climbing wall. After climbing, with sore, spaghetti-like arms, we enjoyed lunch outside while planning events for the semester. The SWE Officer Retreat was a great start to the year for the officer team.
EVENING WITH INDUSTRY By Katarina Bujnoch
Evening with Industry is an annual event hosted by CSM SWE in the fall semester, on the evening before Career Day, and is attended by the Mines President, students, company representatives, faculty members, and special guests from campus. It is a great place for students and company representatives to network. The event features an informal networking session as well as a formal dinner. This year, the networking session was extended to allow students and representatives more time to network. The feedback from having the longer session was overwhelmingly positive. This year, over 250 people attended the event, which made it one of the largest to date. Company representatives and students alike enjoyed an evening that was beneficial to their job recruitment or search. We had a fantastic dinner as well as an inspiring speech from our keynote speaker, Ms. Tiffany Brewster, a Mines alumna.
