WEDNESDAY
18TH MARCH 2016
Some of the men from our
Men’s Group
“1 Direction” joined us for
the first time on an
educational visit!
Hopefully, our good sense of
humour & craziness will make
them want to return on fu-
ture visits to places of
interest & heritage.
That way more people will be
feeding into our plans for the
“Cathkin Braes
Activity Centre”.

“Fabulous day out with the
REVIVE Girls. Fun & laughter as
well as learning all about Scottish

Did you know?
That at the bottom
of the Esplanade is a
small well called the
“Witches Well”.
It was near here
that over 300
people were
burned for sup-
posed Witchcraft!
So we threw
“Mary Doll” IN!!

“Would visit again! As I really enjoyed
learning all about the time when the Prisoners
of War were accommodated at the Castle.
There was also information about what
happened to the Soldiers from the Castle who
had committed crimes.”

WHAT WE LEARNED FROM THE VISIT Edinburgh Castle is one of over 300 historically significant properties
throughout Scotland that is looked after by Historic Scotland. The
Castle is situated on an extinct volcano which has provided a natural
defensive site for settlements & forts
since the bronze age. By the 11th
century kings used the castle as a
fortress and it is the oldest surviving
castle building, which includes St
Margaret's Chapel, which dates from
this period.
There have been many changes since then
and much of the Castle that we can see
today was built by James IV (1448—
1513),including the great hall & the Royal apartments. However, by
the time his granddaughter, Mary Queen of Scots, came to throne,
Stirling Castle & Holyrood Palace had become favourite royal places!
We also learned all about:- Attackers & Defenders & why several
Gates were built and in which century; Mons Meg; the Royal House-
hold’ the Crown Jewels; St Margaret’s Chapel; Prisoners of War;
Books of Remembrance and The ONE O’clock GUN!!
“We especially enjoyed hearing all
about “Mary Queen of Scots, since
our visit in 2015 to Stirling Castle,
where we danced with her in her
chambers to Merrily Merrily.”
“It was great to be there to see and hear the “One O'clock
Gun” go off! The silence before it happens is quite special & it
was good to be part of a very old Scottish tradition.” Madge

Did you know that you can still get married in the
St Margaret’s Chapel?
“It is so tiny that it is hard to believe that they still have weddings in
it. Fathers of the Brides will be happy, because you could only invite
about 6 guests if that!” Anna
“I really enjoyed seeing the
Crown Jewels, just a pity
that I couldn't try
them on!” Fran
