Korematsu v. United States (1944)
Korematsu was a Japanese-American in his 20s wholived in Oakland when internment began in 1942.
After two failed attempts to enlist in the army toavoid internment, he turned to posing as Chineseand took a job in a trailer park
This was done so he would not have to beseparated from his white girlfriend
He was found guilty of violating the executive order
in 1944

At the end of the war, relocation was revoked andthe Japanese-Americans were released.
These American citizens were left to restart their
lives again. Their homes, lands, and possessions were gone as a result of
their relocation.
Many Japanese Americans still faced racism when they triedto find jobs and new homes.
Civil Liberties Act of 1988
Provided for an apology and $20,000 payment toeach remaining survivor of internment.

In 1988, Congress passed legislation that gave$20,000 to every Japanese American who had beeninterned in the camps. In signing House Bill 442,
Reagan said, “We are here to right a grave wrong….It
is not for us to pass judgment on those who mademistakes. And yet the internment was just that– a
mistake.” The first payments were made to those 80years and older in October 1990 accompanied with a
formal letter of apology.
