Eating Well: Quick Morning Time MealsBy Gurleen G.

As hardworking individuals and sometimes jejune teenagers, we forget to take care of ourselves due to our overwhelming and hectic schedules. We often neglect the need to eat a mindful and flavourful breakfast. In this edition of - The Voice - you will be compelled to have a scrumptious breakfast each day, and love each and every moment of the mouth-watering delicacies in your kitchen. Here are some suggestions of what to eat in the morning.Mixed Berry Smoothie: A blend of milk, sugar and fresh, sweet, berries. The airy taste of this flavoursome drink is sure to give you a boost to your day. This mélange can also be served with garnished almonds on top to add a crunchy and

delicate sensation to your taste buds.Crunchy, Veggie Sandwich: Well described by its name, this is a

composition of whole-wheat, toasted bread with various pickle chutneys and creamy spreads. This sandwich is incomplete without a selection of sliced baby cucumbers and lettuce. Largely enjoyed with the overpowering unity of Spicy Mint Chutney or Mango Pulp Pickle, Ketchup, Mayonnaise, or Red Hot Chilli Sauce, this sandwich places emphasis on its delicateness and crispy taste.

Homemade Oatmeal Favourite: Composed of half a bowl of whole grain oats and a quarter bowl of milk heated on the pan until brown and of thick and soft consistency, this quick, easy meal is sure to give a boost to your day. This breakfast is widely enjoyed with a fresh glass of orange juice or tossed with fresh berries, and sprinkled with the desired amount of brown sugar. It is sure to keep you on your feet for a fun-filled day ahead.

Crispy, Crunchy Egg Toast: Delectable slices of whole wheat bread, covered in a zesty mélange of homestyle spices and the original aroma of fresh cut greens, oranges, and reds in yolk mix. This toast is sure to linger on your fingers. In preparation, you need a handy fry pan, a bowl, two slices of bread, two eggs and your preferred spices and vegetables. Although this recipe may require a bit more time, the wait will definitely be worthwhile. Step 1: Crack two eggs and pour the egg yolks and egg whites into the

bowl. With a fork, whisk the eggs until you achieve a smooth consistency. Then add your preferred spices and finely cut vegetables; continue mixing. At the same time, toast the bread until light brown and heat the fry pan with a drizzle of vegetable or canola oil on medium high.Step 2: When the bread turns a light brown, dip each slice of bread into the egg mix, letting it be covered in all egg mix. Then, place the bread into the fry pan, and flip with a spatula so the bread is well cooked on each side. If the egg mix does not fully cover the slice, pour the remainder of the egg mix onto the bread, distributing it evenly.Step 3: When the bread forms a nice, tanned yellow on both sides, place the slice of bread onto a serving plate. If desired, place a leaf or two of parsley on top of the dish and enjoy it with the tangy taste of ketchup and a refreshing blend of orange juice.

I hope this guide is a flavourful and useful one and hope you all enjoy yourselves preparing such scrumptious and nutritious meals. These meals are sure to keep you active and attentive for the day. Enjoy the delectable and mesmerizing tastes of these morning fares. Take care and eat well!

Book Review

Author: Pierce BrownGenre: Sci-fi Rating: 5/5 stars

The Red Rising Trilogy

By Lisa A.

The Red Rising trilogy is an action-packed sci-fi thriller set on the planets and moons of our solar

system. It’s set far in the future, where eugenics and genetic manipulation has led to the creation of a colour system, a social hierarchy, where every colour has been genetically engineered for a specific job in society. The Yellows are scientists and medical personnel; Violets are creative artists, Browns are servants, Coppers are bureaucrats and it continues on to include all the colours of the rainbow and more. Each colour has a place in society and on top of the social hierarchy are the Golds, who are the rulers of humanity.

Darrow is a Red, an unskilled manual labourer who mines the deepest parts of the planet Mars for the helium-3 that is an essential ingredient for terraforming Mars and the other planets in the solar system. Darrow believes that he and his people are toiling so that they can make Mars a liveable place for the rest of humanity.

When Darrow’s wife, Eo, is killed, he finds out that everything they have been told is a lie. Mars has already terraformed and has been able to sustain life for centuries. The Golds have kept the Reds enslaved in mines in order to hold onto their power. Darrow is enraged and becomes involved with the Sons of Ares, a rebel group whose goal is to destroy Gold society and bring justice and peace to the lesser Colours, especially the Reds.

The first book, Red Rising follows Darrow as he sets out to infiltrate the Gold Institute and bring them down from within. In the second book, Golden Son, Darrow learns the price of power and makes decisions about morality and how far he is willing to go to achieve his goals.

Morning Star, the highly anticipated last instalment in the series was just released on February 9 th. For newcomers to the series, now is a good time to join the fandom as all the books have now been published. For those who are returning to the series, you will not be disappointed.

All three books in the series are currently available at our library.

A Tribute to David BowieBy Zara K.

In 2016, the music industry was faced with a tremendous loss, the death of legendary singer, songwriter, actor, and record producer, David Robert Jones, or as the world knew him David Bowie, 'Ziggy Stardust', 'The Thin White Duke', was a musical phenomenon. We, remember him today as someone who opened the minds of many, around the world, with his immense influence on the world of music. He changed, the identity of rock and roll, forever by making

it more than just about music, but rather an idea. Like art it "is a series of performances and each version of yourself is as real as the next." He was often referred to as the 'Chameleon of rock and roll', a true master of forms, his music, attitude, style and overall outlook on life, broke barriers, always exceeding the boundaries of convention. Pop music would not be what it is today without the help of Bowie. His new dimension of music in the 1970s’ also inspired many other genres such as punk rock music. He himself was influenced by rock n’ roll legends like Elvis Presley and Marc Bolan. Many of us may remember him as the 'Goblin King' from the hit 1986 Adventure-fantasy Children's film Labyrinth.

David Bowie has inspired generation after generation of music fans, from Nirvana to Prince to Kanye. Mick Jagger expressed his thoughts on the genius that was David Bowie, saying, "David was always an inspiration to me and a true original. He was wonderfully shameless in his work." Other celebrities also took to social media to express their condolences; Anne Hathaway captioned "Safe journey home Starman". Lady Gaga performed a David Bowie tribute at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. David Bowie made music until the very end. Two days after the release of his new album Blackstar and his 69th birthday, on January 10th 2016, he tragically passed away due to liver cancer. Ziggy Stardust may have perished, but his legacy will live on and his influence on music will continue to inspire many generations of musicians to come. David Bowie, will never truly die, in the hearts of his fans.

Twenty-Fifteen Throwback!By Kanu K.

As we reach another great end to another amazing fun-filled year, there are a few great memories I'm sure everyone can relate to.

The “ Dress” Let's get straight to the point... Blue and Black or White and Gold!!!(personally, I'm on team white and gold!)

This dress landed on the internet not just with many likes and hits, but a controversial debate over whether the dress was blue and black or white and gold. It got everyone thinking about the truth, and finally after millions of views and comments, the people confirmed that the dress was in fact blue and black.

EqualityIn 2015, Barack Obama officially confirmed that, “Gay and lesbian

couples now have the right to marry, just like anyone else. #lovewins” in America. In my opinion, this is a big step to equality for the entire world around us.

With all great wins, there are always sad losses, and in 2015 we have lost some great and wonderful people. For example, Leonard Nimoy (1931-2015) and the very young Caleb Logan. A few very breath taking events also took place such as the Paris terrorist attack and the many gun attacks all over the world. And, not forgetting the great battle between Mayweather and Pacquiao!

year, and is ready to battle the upcoming one!

🎊 🎉What do you think is the most difficult part of your job?"The most difficult part of my job, I believe, is getting students to help themselves. Trying to help students out of the bad spots in their life, convincing them that it is necessary for them to take action, if they want to change something. I think that's hard."

How much do you think a school counselor impacts a student's decisions?"I think we do have a part in it. Obviously we don't create 100% of the decision making process, but I do think that we give them different perspectives to look at an issue, and help give them the strength they need to make a choice and implement their decisions. So, I don't know the exact percentage, but I do believe we play a big factor."

Since our school is very multicultural, how do you deal with cultural differences?"Since I said before, I've taught in many places such as native reserves, I've taught on the East Coast, I've taught here, and I think you always have to take cultural differences into account. But, in the end people are people, and you look at motivation, and look at what they want, and you try to work things out based on that. Cultural factors are always going to be there. There are certain things you always have to be more aware of, but generally you have to learn to work with it. I remember working on reserves and students wouldn't look you in the eye, because that's a sign of respect in their culture. So, culture does play a factor when it comes to dealing and working with people, but it is not the only factor."

What advice would you give to our seniors? "Be true to yourselves. Think about how you really feel about things and don't keep things in. Talk about them and get help when you need it. You don't have to go through anything alone, including studying. Reaching out to other people is the biggest thing you can do. Help each other so we can help you."

A word of advice, for all students?"Time management! Mr. Walker, is a big fan of time management, but it's the same thing, take care of each other, we have over a thousand students in this building who are just like you, and if we all just take care and support each other, we would be a much happier school, and get closer to where we want to be."

Academy Awards Movie SpotlightBy Hiya G.

It’s that time of year again. When Hollywood stars try on their new designer outfits and practice their speeches. The 88th Academy Awards are right around the corner! So why don’t we look at some of the movies that will be featured this year?

First let’s look at the most anticipated award of the night- The Best Picture. Tom Hardy’s “Mad Max: Fury Road” is currently the talk of the town. The follow-up to the 1979 film Mad Max, it tells the story of Max during a post-apocalyptic Earth. Sounds typical? Well we can

Page 6: schools.peelschools.org€¦  · Web viewStraight outta Compton. Spectre. Minions. Furious 7. Terminator Genisys. Mocking Jay part 2. Fantastic Four. With all great wins, there are

assure you that it is not. Just a warning though! You will find a lot of violence and gore throughout. But if you’re into that then go for it!

Next some movies in Actor in Leading Roll. You can check out Matt Damon’s revolutionary roll as Mark Watney in “The Martian”. Which, FYI, is also a nominee for The Best Picture. The film (based on a book by Andy Weir) is about a man who get left

behind on a mission to Mars and now has to learn and survive on the desolate planet.

Michael Fassbender is also up to win that award for his amazing roll as Steve Jobs in his biographical film, “Steve Jobs”. The film tells the life story of a man who changed the world by creating the most popular electronic company known to the world. The film also has a prize roll from comedian, actor and director, Seth Rogen.

Finally let’s take a blast to our past by discussing Animated Feature Films. The animated

films that have really seemed to make a debut are Amy Poehler’s “Inside Out”; the film that shows a different take on the emotions that are roaming inside out head and “Shaun the Sheep Movie”; the film remake of a hilarious animated show about lazy farm animals going on an adventure.

Some of the other movies that may or may not be making a huge debut this February 28th are “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” for Film Editing, Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Revenant” for Production Design and Best Picture and “Room” for Best Picture and Directing; an inspirational film that would bring tears to all.So you tell me? Who do you think will be winning the awards? Will it be the movies that have been talked about for months now, or perhaps it could be a movie that you have never even heard of? Will the movie of your choice go home with an Oscar or with disappointment? Tune in Sunday, February 28, 2016 to find out!

Poem A Sepia World

Patches of shadows flicker on the dusty ground Wind stirs up the earth  A plain white dress spills Like creamy muddied moonlight  The stained fabric flutters  Hugging the figure of a young dark girl Cinched around the waist by a dirty satin ribbon   Black hair flutters around her ears

A head of a raven-as dark Eyes like a raven-beady, sharp Small footprints swallowed up by the sandy lane

A lonely call of a raven gets pulled and stretched in the breeze Like the cotton candy clouds above   A brick house squats underneath  the shade of a small green tree Cooking smells beckon from within  Sharp, doughy, hot  Sweat of the workers mingle in the air   Dry whispers traverse the crumbling stones  Silently  (Too quietly) The girl spreads her arms wide and mirrors the shadows on the ground Of the birds flitting across the sky Dry grass crackles and pricks her weathered feet  The stream of air hits her face and stings her eyes Teardrops falling, falling Falling, disappearing  Drank up thirstily By the parched earth A billowing spirit anchored to this sepia world Orange red dust bathed in orange red sunlight   Shackled by her ancestry, her skin Her feet cannot leave the ground   Seeking freedom like that of the birds above.

The Luminance of Life

Laughter is everlasting, eternal, and priceless.Even if we age every day, our laughter always keeps us infantile.A soft laughter will ease the pain every time.Wailing is captured by the smiles and joy.If there is sadness, tears become laughter. If there is cheerfulness, laughter become the freight.Laughter is a natural phenomenon, it can never be fake.Like love and happiness, laughter is an infectious feeling.Laughter is the poison for the freight.Always, it is an antidote for the affairs of the heart. Laughter is beautiful because in darkness, it is the lighting.Without laughter, life will be valueless and a waste.Laughter equally unites the protagonists and the antagonists.Laughter is everlasting, eternal, and priceless.

The Voice Update By Sanghavi S.

A Major LossRecently, two well-known stars passed away: Alan Rickman and David Bowie. Rickman,

most notably known for his role of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter film franchise, passed away on January 14, 2016, at the age of 69, after a long battle with cancer. Bowie, an acclaimed musician, passed away shortly before on January 10, 2016, at the age of 69, also after a long bout of cancer. The sudden loss of two bright stars, especially in such a short period of time,

shook the world; fans and celebrities alike took to social media to express their condolences and sorrows by contributing anecdotes and art. While they may be gone, the lasting impact they have had will stand the test of time.

Stars! (…and sports)

The Denver Broncos beat the Carolina Panthers 24-10 on Tuesday, during the Super Bowl 50, much to the delight of die-hard fans of the Broncos. That wasn’t the only highlight of the day however. The game featured multiple star-studded performances. The day began with Lady Gaga absolutely nailing a rendition of the American national anthem. Her amazing execution of the anthem was only one of another of her recent successes; she had recently won a Golden Globe she has received an Oscar nomination, and she has a slot at the upcoming Grammys to perform a David Bowie tribute. She was later followed by Beyoncé, Coldplay and Bruno Mars during the rousing half-time performance. One part of the half time show in particular rubbed some people the wrong way: Beyoncé’s performance of her recent single, “Formation”. Many individuals disliked her allusion to the Black Panthers, her all-black dance troupe and her politically charged lyrics, many of them resorting to call her slurs and protest her performance. Despite the naysayers, the overall consensus was that Beyoncé managed to address the racial issues still occurring in America and empower people of colour, all while providing an amazing production.

Get to know your Guidance CounselorBy Zara K.

Here at The Voice, we believe in supporting all of our school faculty. This month, we will be focusing on the unique contribution that guidance counselors bring to our school. They guide us throughout our four years in high school, striving to help us excel academically, socially, and

Page 8: schools.peelschools.org€¦  · Web viewStraight outta Compton. Spectre. Minions. Furious 7. Terminator Genisys. Mocking Jay part 2. Fantastic Four. With all great wins, there are

personally, as well as plan for a bright future. With the spotlight on counselors this month, it is important to recognize the impact they make on the lives of students and the school community.

We had the opportunity to interview Mr. Walker, one of our school guidance counselors.

What influenced, you to become a counselor?"I think I have worked with students from different backgrounds, different cultures, and realized that everyone has the same kind of problems, and the same kind of issues. I wanted to be a part of helping them, find some kind of solution, which they will eventually come to on their own. I like people, and I like working with people. I've always been a very outgoing and social person. I enjoy having fun,

joking. I know it's not for everyone. There is a lot of stress that comes with it, all the factors you deal with other's problems as your own so you try to balance that out. Not everyone likes getting deep into people’s personal problems. It's not for everyone, some people would rather teach, some people like listening and helping people."

What appeals to you most about this job?"Working with the students and sharing in their joy. Helping them when they are sad, helping them get through the sad parts, and enjoying in the joyous parts. Seeing their joy, especially their excitement, our moments I cherish."

What do you see as the role of the Guidance counselor, in the school setting?"I believe it’s multifaceted. It's the liaison between student and teacher, sometimes student and parent, teachers and VP's. Administrators and students, when it comes down to it. Working with students and social workers, sometimes even students and psychologists. Students and their course selection, and for the seniors’ university course selection, dealing with their personal problems, regarding universities. We help students in every aspect of their lives: personal, social, academic or post-secondary."
