Presentations
1. Recent trends in landscaping and quality parameters – N. Chandra Mohan Reddy
Explained about the recent advances which has taken place in the landscape industry. He has brought together the flora of all the continents which he has personally seen into one place in his presentation. He has shown the varied structures built to accommodate the flora and fauna in parks and the quality parameters to maintain them.
2. Garden concepts & components – K. Pundarikakshudu
Previously only softscape (trees/plants) make up a garden, but now there’s an advancement which includes hardscape and water to make it look more natural. Ideally, a well-designed landscape incorporates a balance between the two elements. In order to break the monotony and to enhance the beauty, a garden should contain components of varying nature, which was well explained in this class.
3. Planting techniques, Estimation / Quotation preparation & record keeping – S. Mustafa
There’s an ideal planting technique for each plant and it differs one from another, for example we cannot place a bulb deep inside and a deep rooted plant on the subsurface level. Either way it leads to death of the plant. All these planting techniques the depth and the pit size for different trees, hedge plants etc. was explained by S. Mustafa. Not only that he has explained how to prepare a quotation and also how to maintain the records in the measurement book to avoid problems in the future.
4. Lawn Development and maintenance – Dr. M.G. Devamuni Reddy
The heart of a garden is the Lawn. A lush green lawn is refreshing especially during summer and is the best foreground to enjoy the charm and beauty of the ornamental plants and features. Its development and maintenance, the quantity required/m2, intervals of mowing, nutrient deficiency disorders was explained in detail.
5. Specifications in hardscape works – Sri.D. Balarami Reddy
In this presentation, how to make an estimate for development of landscape i.e. cost of material for Cu.m, labour charges (transportation, planting, application of fertilizers), water charges etc. for different pit sizes and the number of plant species, their quantity required was well explained in detail.
6. Hardscaping in parks and gardens – Mr. P. Satyanarayana
Mr. Satyanarayana has explained in detail the equal importance of Hardscaping in parks and gardens. Hardscape can be thought of as "hard," yet movable, parts of the landscape, like gravel, paving, and stones. It is solid and unchanging but have different effects on the environment.
7. Drip / Popup / Sprinkler irrigation designing & maintenance- Mr.Abhijit Chawan
Irrigation is one of the most important factors to be considered while maintaining a garden. Effective irrigation will influence the entire growth process from seedbed preparation, germination, root growth, nutrient utilisation, plant growth and regrowth, yield and quality. The development of automated irrigation systems has made life simple and easy.
8. Maintenance of Central medians, Selection of quality seedlings – Y.Ramarao
Plantation is one of the most important constituents of soft landscaping. Trees, shrubs and climbers have been used to enhance the soft natural ambience against harsh elements in most of the enhancement schemes. The planting species are decided based on the physical growth characteristics of trees, like form and shape, foliage pattern, growth rate, branching pattern, soil characteristics and conditions of the strip like water logged areas etc. While selecting the species of trees for landscaping a great care should be taken to choose the species. On the other hand, if a pure avenue of single species is planted for a considerable length of the road, it gives a harmonious and pleasing look. It is, therefore, essential that mixtures of different species should be avoided and pure avenues of a single species be planted over long stretches of road. This will enhance the aesthetic quality and will also render management easier.
9. Nutrient management – Dr. M. Ravindra Babu
Nutrient management is managing the amount, form, placement and timing of nutrient applications (whether as animal waste, commercial fertiliser, or other forms of nutrients) to plants. The purpose is to supply plant nutrients for optimum forage and crop yields, minimise entry of nutrients to surface and ground water and to maintain or improve soil condition. All
the essential nutrients required for the plants, their deficiency symptoms and their management was explained in detail.
Field visit
A field visit was conducted for the trainees. They were taken to the different plantation sites like the central medians on the highway on NH, Kesarapalli pond where fertigation and lawn management were explained (Fig.2, 3), Miyawaki plantation in Vambay colony, Avtar park where different plant species were planted and finally to the Durga temple flyover where vertical gardening is done and other landscaping project done by our technical team.
