Independence,
Peace,
Unity…
We need this national holiday more than ever to help us remember some of our core values as people of a United States. At a time when we witness so much division and angst as a country over various issues, we Christians must put our Mission - love, community, forgiveness, Jesus - before an ideology of a political party. On a personal and parish level, we begin living our own Mission of love and unity in our homes and families. But the time away from each other we have had during this pandemic also gives us an opportunity to re-think our per-sonal commitment to our parish family as well. I pray that the Holy Spirit will inspire more of our parishioners to ‘step up’ and get more involved in volunteering and their contributions as we realize how grateful we are for our parish of St. Clare. On this weekend of celebrating the anniversary of our “independence” from England in 1776, as Christians we must admit our DEpendence on God and the importance of being connected and involved in our parish. I have been so happy to hear so many parishioners talk about how much they missed the ‘community’ aspect of coming to Mass as well as the Eucharist of course. As we pray for God to bless our country and the whole world with peace and healing grace, may the Holy Spirit enflame our hearts to be reflections of God’s Love and Unity…in our homes, in our parish, in our neighborhoods. God’s Peace be with you, Fr. Jim Deiters
Our parish community was set to celebrate the initiation of six Elect into the Catholic Church through the Sacraments of Baptism, Confir-mation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil Mass this year; however, COVID-19 delayed those plans. We are now pleased to announce that they will be initiated on Monday, July 13, at 7 p.m. during a special,
livestreamed Mass. Parishioners are welcome to attend as well and should follow all safety procedures. Please continue reading to learn more about each of the Elect. Kaylynn Ann Burns said the Christian initiation pro-cess is helping her make smarter decisions in life. Kaylynn is a seventh-grader at Joseph Arthur Middle School and says she is ready to publicly confess her commitment to Christ. She attends St. Clare Parish School of Religion and helps with various activities at church.
She selected St. Ives as her Confirmation saint, because he is the patron saint of law and she hopes to become a lawyer to fight against injustice. Her sponsor is her grandmother, Patricia Burns, who is a wonderful Catho-lic role model and inspiration to Kaylynn. Stephanie Czesak was drawn to the Catholic faith by attending Mass with her husband, David, and his family. “I love the church community and that the structure of Mass is the same everywhere,” she says. In addition to going through the Christian initiation process, she has joined the Cornerstone Bible study and is helping with the gardening ministry.
She says her faith journey has given her more patience, peace, happiness and love. She chose Donna Czesak, her mother-in-law, as her sponsor. “She is an amazing woman, is always there to answer my questions and is very supportive of my faith journey,” she says.
Stephanie, an at-home mom with a background in real estate, selected St. Elizabeth Ann Seton as her Confir-mation saint. “She was like me in the fact that she was always drawn to God and to the Bible but did not con-vert to Catholicism until later in life. She is inspiring because she went through a lot of hardship throughout her young adult life and her strength and resiliency drew her closer to God.” Madison Czesak, daughter of Stephanie and David Czesak, is a fourth-grader at St. Clare Catholic School. She is excited to become Catholic to become closer to God. She says learning more about our faith has helped her love her brother more. Her sponsors are her grand-parents, Steve and Donna Czesak. She chose St. Francis as her Confirmation saint because they share a love of animals and God.
Six to Finally Be Initiated at St. Clare! Brendan Czesak, son of Stephanie and David Czesak, is a second-grader at St. Clare School. His sponsors are his grandparents, Steve and Donna Czesak. who are kind and loving to him. He is happy to become Catholic because he believes in God and likes learning more about Him. He selected St. Brendan as his Confirmation saint because he likes the name and they share a love of the water. St. Brendan is a patron saint of the Navy, and they have friends in the Navy. Michael Oyakawa, a member of the U.S. Air Force, was inspired to go through the Christian initiation process to strengthen his bond with God after going to Mass with his wife, Jessie. “I wanted to feel accepted, and St. Clare and the Catholic faith have helped me with that.” He said that joining the Catholic Church has given him a new-found love and appreciation of his gifts from God. “My eyes have been opened from my sheltered way of thinking, and I feel as though God has delivered me here for a pur-pose.” He has joined the Welcome ministry and plans to join the choir.
Michael asked Percy Menzies to be his sponsor after sit-ting near him at Mass one day. “Even though I had no idea of him prior, we had shaken hands and something about him stood out that made me want to talk to him more. After hearing his story, I felt that he would be an amazing sponsor and mentor.”
Michael selected St. Joseph as his Confirmation saint be-cause he and his wife had prayed for St. Joseph’s interces-sion when they moved and followed a Novena about him. “His undying devotion to Jesus and Mary is what I wish to aspire, not only to God, but to my children and wife as well.” Marla Schulte chose to go through the Christian initia-tion process after learning about the Catholic faith from her fiancé, Isaac Fischer, who is also her sponsor. “I have learned a lot from him about the Catholic faith,” she notes. “I also wanted to use this experience as a way for us to center our relationship around God as we get mar-ried this year.”
She said the Church has given her ways to strengthen her faith and develop a relationship with God. “This journey has impacted me in several ways. I am not only more aware of God's presence all around me, but I'm taking steps to live my life in a way that is Christ like. I didn't grow up being strong in faith, so this journey has helped me live life in a more thankful and positive way.”
She selected St. Joan of Arc as her Confirmation saint because “she was a strong woman and always fought for what she thought was right.” Marla just completed her master’s degree in education. She is a member of the Welcome Committee and recently participated in our Women's Welcome retreat. Marla attends many young adult gatherings.
Confirmation will be celebrated
Monday, August 3 at 7:00 p.m. Mass with Fr. Jim
Because seating is limited this year, we are reserving this Mass for students, sponsors,
students families, godparents and catechists who feel comfortable attending Mass in person.
First Holy Communion Students who prepared for First Holy Communion and still need to receive the Eucharist for the first time may
do so in small groups at the weekend Masses once your family feels comfortable attending Mass in person.
Please check email for Signup Genius to sign up for date and time for First Holy Communion for your child.

One Adult Confirmation and One being Received
Into the Church
Preparing for Confirmation as an adult is Dave Czesak, whose wife and children are previously men-tioned. He was baptized Catholic, but not confirmed. “I would like to be confirmed in order to continue growing my relationship with God,
to be an example for my children and to better help them forge their relationship with God within the Catholic Church,” says David, who is in the U.S. Air Force. He says this journey “has helped to bring our family closer together with God.”
His sponsor is Percy Menzies, who was one of the first people their family met at St. Clare. “Kindness and warmth radiate out of him, and he is knowledgeable about God and the Catholic Church,” Dave says.
His Confirmation saint is St. Joseph of Cupertino. “I chose him because despite his short-comings of being considered slow to learn and absent-minded, he overcame those and accomplished his goals.” Dave is involved in the nature trail ministry at St. Clare. He will be confirmed with his family.
Our parish community will also witness one Candidate renew her baptismal promises and complete her Chris-tian Initiation through the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist. She was originally scheduled to do this at the Easter Vigil. She will be received into the Full Communion of the Catholic Church Sunday, July 5, at the 8:30 a.m. Mass.
Nkumbu (Nakazwe) Simunyola was baptized in the United Church of Zambia as a young adult and learned about the Catholic faith through her husband, Teza Simunyola. “After recognizing scripture and tradition and fully comprehending the sacraments, I decided to become Catholic and participate in the Eucharist,” she says. Her journey into the Church has helped her realize “a sincere sense of peace and witness of God’s grace.” Her sponsor is Ann Millikin, who she says lives a life of faith that is evident with her commitment to the Church. “She has been supportive and encouraging in my journey to becoming a confirmed Catholic,” Nkumbu says.
Nkumbu chose St. Perpetua as her Confirmation saint because she inspires her “to realize that greater than life itself is knowing Jesus and being loyal to Him. I there-fore wish to be as dedicated a Christian as I can and help my family follow suit.” Nkumbu is an economist and is volunteering with the soup kitchen ministry.
