Dear Parents / Carers and Friends of Bolingbroke,
Happy New Year!
We have had a wonderful start to the year with Year 7-10 achievement assemblies. Mr Conlon
announced the pupils who have made excellent progress, exceeding their targets and demonstrating
excellent effort in all our three categories. Please see the winners enclosed overleaf.
Ms Brooks announced our new end of year graduation evening for Year 7-10
when every child will graduate the year with either a PASS, 2.1 or 1st. This will
be an opportunity for us to celebrate all of the opportunities your child
embraces, their house points, community spirit and many more aspects of
Bolingbroke Academy school life. The events will be in the last week of the
summer term with dates and details to follow in the coming weeks.
This morning Mel Capleton (Owner & Director, Open Air Fit) inspired our children, teachers and LSAs
in a whole school assembly to share his journey from Professional Football of 16 years to launching
Open Air Fit as the owner and Director. We are extremely grateful to Mel for his company’s part
sponsorship of the mini-bus, elite football training of our footballers and welcoming a number of our
children to take on work experience placements on holiday sports events during the holidays.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all your support to ensure Bolingbroke goes from
strength to strength. I look forward to seeing many of you at the forthcoming Progress Review
afternoon this month with Year 11 this afternoon.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Hound HAMPTON COURT TRIP
On Tuesday 12th December, Year 8 spent the day at Hampton Court. It was an extremely cold, crisp
morning and London was recovering from the icy temperatures and minimal snowfall. The pupils and
teachers travelled from school to Hampton Court by train, departing from Clapham Junction. Their
behavior was excellent on the train and members of the local community commented on how fantastic
our pupils were.
We arrived at Hampton Court at 10.30am ready for the first learning session. The pupils were split into
three groups. Each group had a 1 hour learning session with a member of staff from Hampton Court.
Pupils were taken back in time as they were guided around the palace by a courtier from the reign of
Henry VIII. The courtier explained the trials and tribulations of being either a Catholic or a Protestant in
the Tudor period. Pupils were also taught how to bow and courtesy appropriately, depending on their
station. The 1 hour session provided an interactive and engaging recap of the religious rollercoaster
people endured during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I and Elizabeth I.
Pupils and teachers then had time to explore the palace on their own as well as the palace grounds
which looked incredible as the sunlight that shone over the frosted grass and gravel. Photo credit must
go to Evelyn Sai for some of these fantastic shots!
All in all, a cold but great day out! Well done to all those Year 8s for their impeccable behaviour and a
massive thanks to all the members of staff who supported the Humanities Department.

Hound CONCERT BY CANDLELIGHT
On 12 December, pupils, staff and parents gathered at St Barnabus’ Church on Clapham Common
for Bolingbroke Academy’s Concert by Candlelight. A new location for this year’s concert, the
church, beautifully lit by candles, along with the pre-concert performances from the Bolingbroke
Brass Ensemble provided a festive and warming setting.
The audience sang with great enthusiasm to well known carols, including a special new verse
written by Florence Scott – Winner of the House Christmas Carol competition. Singing was
accompanied by the superb Bolingbroke Senior Band, followed by the Bolingbroke Brass
Ensemble who went on to play Holst’s Mars from The Planets which was incredibly moving.
Readings were spoken beautifully by Mabel Shepherd and Hugo Scott, followed by pieces from
the Senior Choir, Boys Choir, Rock School and Bolingbroke Belles . Ahead of the interval
was the turn of the Staff Choir who gave a fantastic rendition of Fairytale of New York by The
Pogues. The range of musical performances was nothing less than incredible, a testament to the
inspiring talent of our pupils and as one parent commented “such a wonderful evening; a true
festive musical extravaganza!“
After an interval of scrumptious mince pies and festive refreshments, the Year 10 GCSE Music
Ensemble accompanied more carol singing, going on to play Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin
Stevens which made sure everybody’s feet were tapping along!
Betty Smith, Alliyah Johnson and Megan Rowland and the Show Band wowed us with their
performance from Beauty & the Beast as did the Year 12 Music Ensemble playing Dave
Brubeck’s take Five, and lastly Chris Hayden, Jamaine Scarlett and Owen Prenelle who
performed Fly me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra.
All in all, as wonderfully summed up by parents and teachers alike “Today's Christmas performance
was incredible! Every aspect of it. We have been to quite a few and it is no comparison.” and also
“Just wanted to say a massive well done for Tuesday night. You and the team put on a fantastic
concert. It was great to see such a variety of kids on stage performing, and many kids in a different
light!”
The Senior Band and Senior Choir joined forces to play White Christmas by Irving Berlin
before the audience were upstanding and sang their hearts out to We Wish you a Merry
Christmas!

Hound KLEIN HOUSE SPIRIT DAY
The Autumn Term ended with a spectacular finale for Klein House. All of the amazing Klein House
pupils’ hard work was rewarded by their victory in the race to be number one. It was a hard fought
battle, and Erskine, Smyth and Verbiest House were tough competitors. However, only one House
could win the House Spirit Day for having the highest number of positive House Points. The Autumn
Term ended with Klein House as champions. The House was rewarded with a non-uniform day, Civi-
tas breakfast and delightful dessert at lunchtime! Mrs Quincey (Head of House), Mr Thomas (Deputy
Head of House) and all of the Klein tutors were so proud. Klein House are keen to keep the top spot
as the competition for the highest number of positive House Points begins again in the Spring Term!

PE & SPORT
Due to limited light and waterlogged pitches, Football on Thursday afternoons will be suspended until half
term. Pupils are invited to attend Open Air Fit’s Elite Football Session on Monday mornings to ensure
Football is still an option for them. This enrichment starts on Monday at 7.25 am.
Rugby Y7-9 on Tuesdays is also suspended until half term. Instead of Rugby club we will be in the sports
hall doing Rugby Fitness/Skills sessions.
These clubs will resume once light returns and pitch conditions improve.

Hound STAFF PANTOMIME
This year’s Christmas Staff Pantomime was a spectacular way to end
the term, seeing our teachers tread the boards and venture into the
world of acting. We thought it was hard to beat 2016’s
iconic pantomime ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’, but this year’s offering,
‘Harry Potter and the Ghost of Bolingbroke’, was easily the best one
yet. Mr Kalorkoti’s hilariously witty script got the whole
school roaring with laughter.
Mr Iles outdid himself as Voldemort (with his bespoke bin bag / bald
cap creation), even though his Pikachu get-up from last year was
a tough one to beat! We also can’t forget Ms Edis’ apparent
versatility as she transformed into the famous Hogwarts
headmaster, Dumbledore. Jokes ranged from classic pantomime wit,
to a DAB of slightly more modern humour - the performance came
to a climactic finale,
f e a t u r i n g
Voldemort being struck down by a rendition of
Big Shaq’s “Man’s Not Hot”, and all Hogwarts
houses joining hands for a High School Musical
singalong. We are so looking forward to the
upcoming staff pantomimes and can’t wait to see
what bizarre antics the staff can conjure up next!

PERFORMING ARTS
SIXTH FORM PLAY
We staged Bolingbroke's first-ever Sixth Form Play just before the Christmas break. To those who
attended, I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did! Laughter is the greatest thing. From reading my
script on the first day of rehearsal, all the way until the actual performance, my fellow cast members
and I laughed a lot, and were gifted with such happiness by being in the show. I have learnt so much,
I have grown as an actor, but most importantly the four of us have all grown as friends. It meant a
lot to us as a team performing this piece, which whilst funny and heart-warming also raises aware-
ness about teen neglect and suicide. Overall, the experience was amazing and I am so sad that it has
come to an end, however I am also excited for future productions. I could not have done it without
the ongoing support and encouragement of my peers, and the wonderful Mr Kalorkoti.
- Neesha Thaker (Year 12)
Thank you so much to Mr Kalorkoti, our Theatre Coordinator, from all the cast and the Academy.

FUNDRAISING
In response to a wish list provided by the
Academy the Parents Association have set up
three JustGiving initiatives to raise funds for the
Music, Product Design and Drama
departments.
PRODUCT DESIGN The Art and Design department strives to provide pupils with the opportunity to practice new skills and
create their designs using specialist equipment which is fit for purpose. We need to ensure that the
workshop is resourced with the right equipment to give pupils the chance to keep up with the latest
working practices. Donations will go towards an acrylic convection oven, a brazing hearth for pewter
casting and metal welding, a benchtop router table, die and tapping kit for aluminium rod joining plus a
biscuit jointer, dust extractor, drill set and lathe cutting tools. The total amount needed for this is £2,780.
PROGRESS REVIEW MEETINGS
There are three Progress Review Meetings scheduled for this term.
Friday January 5 2.30-5.30pm Y11
Thursday January 11 4.30-7.20pm Y9
Friday January 26 2.30-5.30pm Y7
The Parents Association helps at these events by serving drinks and biscuits/cakes to teachers during the
afternoon/evening and this year we are also hoping to raise some funds by selling drink and cakes to
parents and pupilS.
If you are able to volunteer to help with this on any of these dates please sign up for one of the slots
through PTA Social https://app.ptasocial.com/communities/2170. We would also be grateful for any
donations of cakes and biscuits - please either drop them off at Reception in the morning or bring them
along on the day.
EVOLVING BEHAVIOUR POLICY SURVEY
You will all have received a communication from the school via Bolingbroke Post asking parents
to participate in the evolving behaviour policy survey. PLEASE CAN WE URGE YOU TO TAKE
PART. This is the best way for school to collate feedback from parents and add to that from
pupils in order to arrive at the best possible solution. The more parents who take part the more
meaningful the results will be.

DRAMA & MUSIC
The Drama department offers pupils the opportunity to perform to their family, friends and teachers in our
fantastic shows. Pupils can audition to perform in a whole school Musical each year, a Y7 and Y8 production
and we will have had our first sixth form show this year. Pupils are involved in all aspects of stage
production including lighting and sound production and the success of our shows relies on effective stage
equipment. Funds raised will go towards ceiling microphones and radio microphones and the total needed
for these is £1,000.
ANY donation you are able to contribute would be very much appreciated. The easiest way to find the
JustGiving pages is http://arkbolingbrokeacademy.org/parents-association then select Fundraising from the
drop down options and you will find the links to the three separate pages.
Our music curriculum centres around inclusivity where every pupil is provided with the best musical
opportunities and all Y7 pupils are given the chance to learn an instrument. To ensure that we can continue
to provide this unique opportunity to our growing number of pupils the music department needs to
purchase additional equipment and repair existing ones. Money raised will go towards instrument purchases
and repairs, music stands, keyboard stands, recording interfaces, microphones and sixth form equipment and
the total amount needed to cover all this is £5,500.
