Zen Story - Empty Bucket 12
“When I see those whom I hate, my mind and body become tense. How to tackle the people I hate?”
- An aspirant asked this question to me.
Is this a problem that is unique only to him?
We all come across some kind of problems every day.
Is it possible that every person that we come across, will
have to be our favourite ones?
Is it possible that every situation that we come across should be favourable to us?
They will all be of different kinds.
Can we change all of those persons and situations to our liking?
Can we change all the situations to our liking?
How to tackle them?
How to handle those situations?
We have classified our approach of functioning of mind as inner and outer.
Do the problems described above, pertain to the inner mind or to the outer world?
The people and the situations that we
come across pertain to the external world.
However the psychological emotions that are caused by them pertain to the inner mind.
Now, for which part are we seeking solution for?
Solution for the problems of the inner mind?
Or solution for the problems of the outer world?
Which is our problem here?
Are the people in the outer world and the outer situations, the real problems?
Or the psychological emotions that were caused by them?
If there is no question of our mind or body becoming tense against the people and the situations, then we will not treat them as problems.
In that case, is it something that pertains to our inner mind?
Or is it an outer problem?
Because the inner emotions are caused by the aspects of the outer world.
What kind of a solution is required here?
What should we do?

- Sri Bagavath
“How to tackle people whom we dislike?”
Should we streamline our inner mind?
Or the happenings in the outer world?
As far as the inner emotions are concerned, there is nothing that we need to do.
It is enough if we treat them as natural.
It is enough if we treat our psychological and bodily tensions as natural.
Is it enough if we treat them like this? Will all our problems be solved?
Suppose a person is throwing stones at us. We get pain because of that.
Will our problems be solved if we take the pain caused by the stone as natural?
Will our problems come to an end if we accept the psychological tension as natural?
As far as the inner mind is concerned, it is quite alright to accept the inner emotions.
Even then it makes sense to analyse how to face the outer world, since it is closely knitted with the happenings in the outer world.
How to face the outer world?
How to face the people that we dislike?
How to face the situations that we do not like?
As far as the outer world is concerned, action is important.
Suppose we are seeing a snake on our way.
We become afraid.
The problem does not stop there if we treat the fear that comes about in our mind as natural.
We should make use of the fear. Making use of that we have to deal with the snake.
One way out is to run away from the snake. The other way is to drive the snake away.
We get tensed when we see the people that we do not like. What should we do here in effect?
Should we run away from them like we did from the snake?
If we do not have anything to do with them, then we can easily get away from them.
But it is not possible to break ties with them if we are associated with them in the work. Hence we cannot even run away from them.
How to tackle them in this situation? How to handle that situation?
There is only one way to approach the inner mind – accepting that as natural.
But in order to face the outer world we can keep a policy or principle towards that.
Let those policies and principles be either real ones or those be based on our beliefs.
Whatever it is, the tensed situation becomes a little eased out if we keep a policy or principle as a support.
I recall the ideas that we spoke about – Maithri, Karuna, Upecha – in that context.
Maithri means relationship. Karuna means mercy. Upecha is detachment.
Let us suppose, a neighbourhood boy is hitting our glass cupboard with his hands. We will be afraid whether the glass of the cupboard would be broken down by the boy.
At the same time, if the boy so hitting, is our own child, our approach would be different. We would not mind the breaking of the glass. But instead we would be afraid whether the broken glass would cause any injury to the child.
Hence we should consider the persons whom we hate as our relatives. If we take them as our relatives, the tensions and conflicts between us would ease out.
“It will be better if you give the meaning of friendship to the word Maithri”, a friend suggested.
Those who consider friendship as
-4-October 2019

significant can consider that way. A relationship should emerge from that. That is important.
If our friend is functioning against us, then we will even be ready to break the friendship.
I happened to read a book that had a lot of information about previous birth experiences.
In that book, there was a story of a wife who had been affected by her husband and goes to seek help from a person who has some mystical powers.
He says, “Your current husband was your son in the previous birth”.
This may be true or may not be true.
We do not know much about previous births.
Suppose the person giving you nuisance lives in the next door. You may consider him as your enemy. But in your previous birth he may be your own son.
Considering this way about that person will reduce the intensity of the problem that you face, to some extent.
Likewise, our decision to behave mercifully will ease out the tension and make us simple.
Though the approach called Upecha (detachment or getting away from something) is talked about in favour of the outer world, it is actually something that is associated with the inner mind-inner world.
We cannot ignore the outer actions and outer situations.
Should we run away from office, if a person whom we hate, joins as our boss?
In the outer world, if we start escaping from the situations, like this, we will not be able to stick to any job.
What is meant by psychological detachment within our mind?
It is almost similar to the statement in Hindu's holy book Bhagavath Gita, “Do your duty.
Do not be attached to the results”.
Result is the outcome of action. Can we be in a job without expecting any fruit or result?
Can a student study well without the expectation of success in the exams?
The term 'result' does not refer something in terms of action.
During each and every moment of our functioning in an external action, a psychological reaction is created as a result.
In the event of these effects being not necessary for any outer action, then, ignoring the inner functioning as least significant and keeping oneself away from that is Upecha.
How to treat the problems and discomforts that are caused in our body by unnecessary psychological emotions?
Upecha is nothing but neglecting the unnecessary psychological emotions.
The discomforts caused in the body are not really discomforts.
These discomforts occur in our body as Physician that streamline the chemical changes that are caused by the psychological emotions.
Hence there is no need to panic about the Physician who has visited the body in the form of that discomfort.
The physician will go away once the required equanimity is created in the body.
Hence, as far as the inner mind is concerned, it is good if we keep ourselves away from the psychological emotions. For the outer world, it is good if we consider our enemy as someone whom we like.
There by it is always good to tackle the situations and concerned persons through the stability of mind.

Our Sri Bagavath Mission Ashram is located at the scenic footh i l l s of Jarugumala i in Kodambakkadu, Periyagoundapuram, Salem.
Every month there has been Sri Bagavath Aiya's Enlightenment Retreat being conducted here.
Moreover many of our seekers who are interested in the retreat want to come with their families.
But enough space for accommodating all the family members in separate rooms is not available. To fulfil this need of all the participating seekers, as per Aiya's advice, we have decided to construct 32 separate rooms with all comforts in natural surroundings.
For humans to live healthily and being one with nature, pollution-free air, pure rain water and chemicals-free food that is made from natural manure, are required. We are also executing innovative work towards preserving the natural resources that are available here. Currently we have been using rain water throughout the year for drinking and cooking purposes. Moreover we have

done some work in order to collect rain water without wasting it, and store as ground water.
Due to this our Sri Bagavath Bhavan has been remaining as a place where all the natural resources are integrated.
In addition to this, it is very rare to get an opportunity of living in the proximity of an Enlightened Master. This rare opportunity will be available for all those who come and stay here.
Interested seekers can join as member for this lot of 32 rooms. We have fixed donation of Rs.5 lakhs for member. The member of these rooms can come and stay with their families during holidays and their leisure time. This will not only be an ideal surrounding where they can stay in the proximity of Aiya, converse with him and attain the clarity of Enlightenment and Understanding, but a place where they can enjoy the natural resources and live healthily.
Interested friends can benefit from this membership.

Greetings to all from your co-traveller.
In this world, only very few out of crores of
seekers have attained Enlightenment.
T h e r e a s o n b e h i n d t h i s i s t h a t
Enlightenment has been prevailing as something
that is beyond description and its descriptions
have always been mystifying.
A big revolution has happened in the space
of spirituality due to the advent of Sri Bagavath
Aiya. It has been made so simple that all the
seekers are now able to attain Enlightenment.
Sri Bagavath Aiya's new approach is the sole
reason behind this simple process.
He has simplified the psychological
functioning by dividing it into inner and outer
world.
Surrender is the consummation of
devotion. It is this surrender that is able to provide
Liberation.
Surrender is something that is just giving in
to whatever happens in whatever manner and
totally accepting that.
Surrender was something that had been an
impossible feat in the present situation.
As Sri Bagavath Aiya enabled us the
understanding of the mind by dividing into inner
and outer worlds, Enlightenment has been made a
possible feat to attain.
Many different emotions come about and
disappear in the mind.
Happiness, fear, sorrow, distress, anger and
desire are all associated with the psychological
functioning.
Outer world is all about our actions.
We have some or other responsibility in this
-7-
world. We may be in a profession. Or we may be
in a job. May be an officer. We have to execute all
our responsibilities in whatever positions we are
in.
The situations we face and the
responsibilities that we accept and act upon, are
all about the outer world.
Though the inner and outer worlds are
two different things, both are interconnected.
Both are finely interlaced.
The outer world may be impacted by the
inner psychological mind or the mind may be
impacted by the outer world actions.
What responsibility do we have to
streamline these?
Inner world or the outer world?
It is enough if we understand that the
psychological emotions are not in our control.
That understanding itself will offer us the
surrender.
However the outer world is not like that.
In addition to understanding the outer world
problems, we also have the responsibility of
streamlining that.
As long as we have not understood this,
our entire effort has been towards streamlining
both the inner and outer worlds.
In a state of having understood the
distinction between both the inner and outer
worlds and the entire effort being spent in the
outer world actions, not only our performance
enhances but the chances of attaining success
also go up.
In this context, it is only those who have
attained Enlightenment that can exist as

It is this simple understanding that Sri
Bagavath Aiya has been offering to all of us and
making us Enlightened individuals.
Sri Bagavath Aiya has been a great Master
who has been enabling thousands of seekers
become enlightened. We all have the glory of
having lived along with Sri Bagavath Aiya.
Beyond that, many people who have been
traveling the Bagavath Path have relished the close
association with Aiya.
As Aiya possesses simplicity and reality
together, it is a blessing for all of us to be not only
closely associated with him, but it is making even
ordinary humans enlightened individuals.
Psychological experts have envisaged that
the future generations would suffer more
psychological stress than the current generations.
It is only the Enlightenment Understanding
offered by Sri Bagavath Aiya that is a perfect
solution to save all those who would suffer from
psychological stress.
Blessed are those who recognise Bagavath
Aiya.
We are all blessed.
We have the responsibility of making
others also blessed like us. thOn 12 September, which happened to be
the Birthday of Sri Bagavath Aiya, many devotees
from Chennai Sri Bagavath Mission met Aiya in
person, obtained Aiya's blessings and celebrated
his Birthday in a grand way.
At present, Aiya is staying in Salem Sri
Bagavath Bhavan.

this message to all seekers and help them attain
Enlightenment understanding.

SCHEDULE OF WORKSHOP ON ENLIGHTENMENTCONDUCTED by Sri Bagavath Ayya
The language of the mind and the body is
the same. They both function in the same way. The
body is nothing but the solid form of the mind. The
thoughts that come about in the mind reveal
through the body as emotions. Feeling the
thoughts in the mind is a subtle form. Feeling the
thoughts through the body is a solid form. In
accordance with the psychological thoughts in the
mind, chemical changes are induced and then
they reveal as physical emotions. The emotions
that we do not feel through the mind are not called
emotions. Similarly we say that body exists
because of the chemical changes in the physical
body. Let us understand the functioning of the
physical body in a similar way we understood the
helplessness of the mind.
We understand the functioning of the mind
by classifying it as inner mind and the outer world.
The intellect part does not interfere in any form in
the free functioning of the mind by understanding
on its own, that it does not have anything to do
with the inner functioning of our mind.
Understanding this is Enlightenment.
Our intellect understands its helplessness
and liberates itself from interfering into the
functioning of the mind. The psychological
-9-
Question & Answer
functioning happens freely without any
interference. All emotions appear and
disappear there and moves freely like a stream.
All the thoughts and emotions run like a freely
flowing river without any stagnation anywhere.
When out intellect conflicts with the
free-flow of thoughts that occur naturally, the
psychological battle starts. Continuous mental
battle accumulates and causes chemical
changes in the body. We call such chemical
change as discomfort or disease.
Mind cannot be used to streamline the
mind. We should use this understanding for the
inner mind. Similarly we should use our mind for
actions in the outer world. This understanding
should be used for the outer world. Leading life
in this manner is the best way to live.
Let us similarly understand the body by
classifying into inner and outer world. The body
corrects itself when it understands that the
intellect does not have anything to do with the
free functioning of the body.
Generally the body digests the food that
we take in, absorbs the nutrients from the food
and expels the waste as defecation. When the
body has the capability to do all this perfectly,
Are the mind and the body one or different?
Question : I understood that Enlightenment is nothing but the intellectual understanding of the
helplessness of the intellect of not having the capability to streamline our psychological emotions. I have
been living with psychological freedom, having understood that our intellect does not have anything to
do with the psychological emotions but only to face the outer world and manage the actions in the outer
world. To what extent does this psychological understanding help in the functioning of the physical
body? How to match this psychological understanding with the physical body? Is there an understanding
for the functioning of the body similar to the functioning of the mind? If there is a similar understanding,
then how do we understand this?
October 2019
V.A.P. SARAVANANCell : 99942 05880
will it not have the intelligence to set right the
discomforts that are caused? Before this happens,
our intellect starts ordering the body to do and
change a few things as a solution to the
discomfort. When the body is not well, there is
nothing wrong if the intellect starts functioning in
the outer world in outer aspects such as what kind
of situations should be created, what kind of food
should be eaten etc., It becomes inappropriate
when it attempts to set right the discomforts of
the body.
Let us understand the connection between
the body and the mind through a simple example.
A tree is something that we see above the ground.
The roots that are the base of the tree hide under
the ground. When the tree is good it means that its
roots are healthy. Any problem in the root will
affect the tree. Even when the tree is impacted by
strong winds or heat, it quickly regains its natural
state if the roots are healthy.
Here the tree is the physical body and mind
is the root. It is the conflict of the mind that reflects
as disease in the body. When the mind is not
healthy, the body will not be healthy either, even if
very healthy food is taken for the growth of the
body. When the mind functions like a freely
flowing stream, the body also functions very
smoothly in a healthy manner.
The psychological emotions such as anger,
fear, hatred, worry, jealousy etc, are similar to the
diseases in the body such as fever, pain, agony,
cough, cold, vomiting, diarrhoea etc. When our
intellect does not interfere in the functioning of
the mind, all the emotions attain the state of
equilibrium. Similarly when the intellect does not
interfere in the functioning of the body, all the
wastes in the body defecate despite the diseases.
All the physical discomforts act as a doctor in the
functioning of the body and make it healthy.
Treating the body medically for the disease is the
same as managing our anger.
-10-
The mind and the body have been
functioning well in order to create equilibrium
which is the natural functioning. Our intellect
should understand that all the physical
discomforts come about in order to create a
balance in the body only and refrain from
interfering in the functioning of the body. When
the intellect does not interfere with the
psychological functioning of the mind, then all
the psychological emotions reach a state of
equilibrium like a freely flowing stream. When
the intellect ignores the physical discomforts, it
will reach a healthy state in which one will not be
aware of the functioning of the body.
All the physical discomforts that occur in
the body are a means of physical balance by
directing the body towards a healthy state. When
the intellect understands that all the diseases are
the wastes that defecate from the body, then the
body reaches a healthy state quickly.
All the actions of the psychological
functioning reflect in the functioning of the body.
When we understand that our intellect does not
have to do anything in the functioning of the
body both the mind and the body returns to its
natural state.
Then what really is the work of the
intellect? When a fear emotion occurs in the
mind, we should avoid managing that. Instead we
should use that fear as a motivation to act
correctly in the outer world.
Similarly when the body is having a
discomfort, for example, when one gets
abdominal pain, the intellect should, (without
trying to remove the pain) involve itself only in
things such as whether food should be taken in or
not or what kind of simple food should be taken
in etc.,
The physical discomforts heal the body
and disappear, similar to the psychological
emotions that disappear on their own.

Empty Bucket
A person was often induced by those
around him to burst out with some emotion like
anger, fear or hate, however much he tried to
remain calm. Then he felt sorry each time. As he
thought that the people around him were the
reason for his problem, he avoided frequent
meetings and closeness with them. Still he could
not solve the problem. He kept seeking solution to
his problem for many days and atlast reached out
to a sage and asked for his help.
After listening to him calmly, the sage asked
him to get two pots of water each from the two
wells in his ashram.
The man filled water in the pot from one
well. There was no water in another well. So he
told the sage that only an empty bucket came
back.
The sage said, “Actually, anger or calm, fear
or fearlessness, hate or hatelessness come out
according to one's nature. The bucket let inside a
dry well shall come out empty. Only the bucket let
inside a well with water shall return with water;
the bucket can bring out only what is inside. The
bucket cannot produce water.
The other men around us are like the
bucket. Their words and deed can only bring out
what is in our nature. Whether it be anger, hate,
love, good or evil-these are only what is imprinted
in our mind. In that way, they are only helping us.
They make us realize what is inside us. There are
so many things imprinted in our mind.
Sometimes we come out with words or deed
unguarded, induced by the situation and by our
state of mind. Thus, our action is often the
reaction to how we understand things. In reality,
the others who seem to be the reason of our
reaction are just empty buckets.”
The man said, “If my own nature is the
reason for everything, how to change this
nature? Give me a solution, please.”
The sage said, “It is beyond one's capacity
to change one's nature. It never changes
knowingly. It shall change without our
knowledge. The anger, fear or hate that others
induce in us keep getting released from our
mind. If we can understand that something
imprinted in our mind is atlast vacating and
getting released from our mind, it is enough. Our
nature shall then change by itself. But our deed is
in our control and if we can act right, after we
come to normalcy, we shall gradually return to
calmness (composure) from anxiety, without our
own knowledge.”
“ Understanding that others are just
empty buckets, I shall hereafter do the right
deed as I shall be conscious now.”
People around us are only empty
buckets.
