The FOUNdATION OF VArIQUeST LeArNINg MOdULeS
VariQuest supports educators by providing countless opportunities to introduce a variety
of visuals and hands-on manipulatives into their classrooms. The use of visuals in the
classroom helps students understand and retain information, specifically abstract concepts.
Visuals can also help bridge the gap for students who struggle with vocabulary and/or
language barriers. hands-on manipulatives create learning experiences in which students
interact with knowledge kinesthetically. research shows that exposing students to a variety
of learning experiences, including visual and kinesthetic, will increase student retention and
help students learn to construct meaningful knowledge from information. The VariQuest
Visual Learning Tools enhance classroom teachers’ ability to provide learning experiences
that meet the learning styles of all students.
The aim of the following Learning Activities is to coordinate the VariQuest Visual Learning Tools
with lessons and activities that incorporate visual and hands-on learning strategies to reinforce
basic skills and provide fun and motivational activities that will supplement your school’s
curriculum. For best practices and additional information on how to customize VariQuest posters,
banners, flashcards, awards, cutouts and manipulatives, review the VariQuest Implementation
guide prior to use.
For the following learning activities, use construction paper for all cutouts unless otherwise
specified. Pre-laminating construction paper using a cold laminator adds durability to cut out
letters, shapes, numbers and collections.

This module focuses on the geography of the United States. Students will understand concepts
related to the five regions, identify each state, and learn its capital city and abbreviation, as well as
important natural and man-made landmarks. In exploring the geography of each region, students will
understand the relationships between geographic factors and society. The learning activity formats
for the different regions (Activities # 5-9) can also be used with other regions. For example, poster
and travel brochure activities can be used for any region. The learning activities in this VariQuest
learning module are designed to meet educational standards in innovative and creative ways. Before
turning to the learning activities, familiarize yourself with general information that will guarantee ease
of use and flexibility.
ASSeSSMeNTFollowing the learning activities, you will find a rubric that can be used to guide you in making
observational assessments of students’ abilities related to the objectives outlined in the learning
activities. It is recommended that you make a copy for each student to guide your ongoing
informal assessments, making anecdotal notes on the back when appropriate.
VArIQUeST CONTeNTyou will find a complete list of all of the content included in this module between the rubric
and Work Order template. The content Id #s (ex. VIS001) for content referenced in the learning
activities are listed in the materials section for each activity and are color-coded to help distinguish
between templates for the Poster Maker (red) and Awards Maker (purple) and cutouts and
collections for the Cutout Maker (gold).
WOrK OrderSyou will also find a work order template on the last page of the Activity guide. This template
can be photocopied and used for placing orders for customized VariQuest posters, banners,
stickers, awards, cutouts and collections. It is designed to be submitted to the primary user of the
VariQuest Visual Learning Tools by those who may not have direct access to them.

extensIon
have students use their how-to
booklets to create a script for a related
infomercial product. For example, for a
how-to booklet about cacti, students
might create an infomercial for creating
an indoor cactus garden, or cacti
inspired desk accessory (cactus
prickles holding memo notes).
Cut out the 15 assorted symbols for plants,
animals, crafts, people, etc. from cardstock.
Write the name of each symbol on an index card.
display how-to books from the classroom and
school libraries.
Whole class
Put away any U.S. maps on display. Spread out the four Southwest region
state cutouts randomly on a table. gather students around the table and
have them identify each state by its shape. Then have the class arrange
the states geographically.
display the symbol cutouts and explain that they represent examples of
plants, animals, crafts and people found in the Southwest region. have
students match index card labels to the appropriate cutouts. Then place
index cards in a bag. Leave the cutouts spread out on the table.
review the nonfiction genre of writing directions. read an example
from a how-to book. Point out the characteristics of the genre: listing
materials needed, step-by-step directions, illustrations for each step and
the finished product. Tell students they will write a how-to booklet for the
Southwest region.
PartnersPlace index cards with the names of the cutouts in a bag. divide students
into pairs then have each pair of students pick one at random. have
partners find the cutout that goes with the card. distribute front and back
Wagon Wheel book covers and pages to each student.
give students trade and textbooks and access to the Internet to research
an aspect of their chosen cutout for a how-to booklet. examples for Totem
Pole include: how to carve a totem pole or how to “read” a totem pole.
have students write the title on the first page of their
book, the materials needed on the second page, then
one step on each of the following pages. encourage
students to illustrate each step of their how-to book.
Once finished, have students assemble their books by
stapling the cover and pages together.
