TheInternationalVisitingFellowshipPrograminWomensandPerinatalPathologyatBrownUniversitywascreatedin1989byDr.DonB.Singer,M.D.andDr.StuartC.Lauchlan,M.B.,Ch.B.atWomen&InfantsHospitalof Rhode Island (WIHRI). Since its inception, the program has provided subspecialty training to a dozenphysicians from academic medical centers across Europe and Asia, with an ongoing mission to expandinternationalexpertise inthediagnosis,testing,andscreeningofdiseasesaffectingwomenandnewbornsworldwide.
Thisprogram isoneof the trainingprogramsofferedby theDepartmentofPathologyatWIHRI,aspecialtywomens health teaching hospital in the U.S.with 19 fulltime faculty exclusively dedicated to diagnosis,research, and education in these subspecialty fields. In addition to the international fellowship, theDepartment is committed to theeducationof trainees in theU.S. through theDonB.SingerFellowship inDevelopmentalandPediatricPathologyandtheStuartC.LauchlanFellowshipinWomensPathology.TwentyonefellowshavecompletedtheSingerFellowshipsince1978,whiletheLauchlanFellowship,createdin1987,hasgraduated16fellowstodate.
By sharing WIHRI expertise in gynecologic and perinatal pathology with an international audience, ourDepartment envisions this fellowship program as a part of a global academic initiative to promote theeducationalresourcesoftheWarrenAlpertMedicalSchoolofBrownUniversity.Overthenextdecade,weaim to extend our collaborations with academic hospitals and medical schools in China, Taiwan, andBangladesh.Sucheffortsarealsogainingrecognitioninthelocalcommunity,culminatinginagrantawardedbytheLukeCharitableFoundationofRhodeIslandin2011.Inaddition,priorfellowsarereceivingrecognitionfor their expertise at a national level; for example, Dr. PiYu Chen (2011 graduate)was recently namedCommissioneroftheGynecologicPathologyCommitteeoftheTaiwanPathologySocietyandDr.WanlinAnnyShen(2012graduate)wasappointedDeputyExecutiveSecretaryoftheGynecologicPathologyCommittee.
The internationalvisiting fellowshipprogram continues toexpandunder the leadershipofDrs.W.DwayneLawrence,C.J. Sung, andM.R.Quddus. In this collaborative effort, the program upholds a vision inwhichinternational physicians educated in gynecologic and perinatal pathology can bring newfound expertise totheirinstitutions,subsequentlybecomingleadersinthehealthcareofwomenandnewborns.
