1. Vision2020 Dublin Forum October 10th 2014 Dublin to be a
global tech startup hub by 2020
2. Welcome When competing internationally the cultural
infrastructure of a city is often more important than the quality
of the physical infrastructure. A citys sense of shared commitment
and destiny, which transcends day to day business rivalries, is not
easy to manufacture but is essential to the required joint sense of
purpose. Startup Nation - The Story of Israels Economic Miracle
Momentum is building in Dublin towards the goal of becoming a
global tech startup hub. Essential building blocks are in place
such as the Activating Dublin report, the adoption by our
Government of the first Irish Entrepreneurship Policy Statement and
the new Commissioner for Startups. The density of large tech
companies in Dublin continues to intensify with 8 of the worlds 10
biggest international technology players having significant
operations in our city. However, competition around the world for
the significant benefits of being a global tech startup hub is
intense. With just five years to 2020 a strategic plan for Dublin
needs to be implemented which will bring together in a coordinated
way the wide range of public and private sector stakeholders needed
for success. As a member of the international Startup Nations
network our focus is on those framework conditions at the strategic
level needed for success. This was our motivation in organising
todays Vision2020 Dublin Forum, bringing together Dublins key
players to help identify those actions needed to maximise Dublins
potential to become a global tech startup hub within the next five
years. The measure of success of todays Forum will be the jobs,
wealth and innovation that the tech startup sector will create in
Dublin in the coming years. We hope you will help play your role in
making this happen. Eoin Costello CoFounder, Startup Ireland
3. Startup Ireland is the independent not-for-profit, body
representing Irelands startup sector. By startup we mean high
impact tech businesses that have the potential to grow rapidly
internationally thereby creating significant jobs and innovation in
Ireland. An Taoiseach Enda Kennys goal is to make Ireland the best
small country in the world for business. We wish to complement this
objective by helping build a world class startup ecosystem here.
The goal is to make Ireland the best place in the world to
establish a high impact technology startup. This in turn will help
Ireland become a leading global destination for high impact
startups (of up to 7 years in existence) that want to scale up
rapidly, effectively a Startup Island. We have a national strategy
which focuses on helping create internationally competitive startup
hubs in each of Irelands cities by 2020. To be internationally
competitive these startup hubs must reflect the natural advantages
and resources unique to each of Irelands cities and complement the
strategies of Enterprise Ireland and the IDA. Our membership of
Startup Nations, the global network of national entrepreneurship
initiatives, gives us unrivalled access to international best
practice. There are significant benefits to be gained from the
learnings of 40 fellow members (such as Startup Chile, Startup
Canada and Startup Korea) in terms of establishing and accelerating
high impact startups. For more information on the Startup Ireland
team and our projects for the coming year please see the rear of
this booklet. Startup Ireland Mission

16. Startup Ireland Projects 2015 Entrepreneur Careers Fair
Monday 17th November in the Mansion House If we want to increase
the pipeline of people choosing an entrepreneurial career, then
Ireland must encourage entrepreneurship as a norm rather than an
exception. Entrepreneurship Forum Report 2014 Culture Change:
Increasing the pipeline of entrepreneurs in Ireland through culture
change is essential to Irelands prosperity. As the opening event of
Global Entrepreneurship Week the fair will provide structured
information from enterprise support agencies on the supports
available for entrepreneurship to the public, students, careers
guidance professionals. This will be complemented by a parallel
series of talks by entrepreneurs on why they chose entrepreneurship
as a career. Students 2 Startups Bringing students and startups
together The potential career path of entrepreneurship must be
inspired from a persons early years within the education system.
Entrepreneurship Forum Report 2014 Education: Entrepreneurship is a
learning by doing activity and one of the best ways to develop
entrepreneurial capabilities is through direct exposure to
entrepreneurship by working with a startup. Startup Ireland
currently help match student interns and student projects with
appropriate startups through our website database. Helping provide
an environment conducive to entrepreneurship PreBudget Submission:
We produce an annual detailed preBudget submission on behalf of the
startup sector to help provide an environment that is pro-startup
and reduces some of the risks associated with becoming an
entrepreneur. Our submission is put out to public consultation to
receive the input of the stakeholders in the startup sector. Our
submission also reflects international best practice through our
membership of the Startup Nations network. Startup Island Annual
Survey Accurate Data on Irelands startup sector: The need for
reliable statistics on the Irish startup sector to help inform
policy was highlighted by the Activating Dublin report in 2013 and
by the Report of the Entrepreneurship Forum in 2014. Startup
Irelands first Startup Island annual survey was completed in 2014
and will be an annual project to help provide quantitative data on
Irelands startup sector.
17. Startup Island Annual Awards Strengthening the Ecosystem:

providing support services to the startup sector (startup
incubator/accelerators, mentors, angel investors, accountants,
lawyers, patent experts, networking groups, co-working space etc.)
to help strengthen and deepen the ecosystem. The objective is to
encourage Irelands biggest corporates and professional service
providers to allocate resources and strategic focus within their

making Ireland a global startup hub by 2020. Guides for Startups

An international startup competition promoting Irelands startup
ecosystem International Profile: Promoting Ireland as an
international destination for startups is essential to raising the
profile of Irelands innovation ecosystem on the international
stage. The Startup Gathering will help showcase Irelands innovation
ecosystem to the world by running an annual startup competition
under the sector headings that match the industry hubs that are
developing in each of our cities. Corporate2Startups Working Group
Collaboration: Better linkages between the startup sector and the
multinationals located in Ireland is essential to help cross
fertilisation and to grow world class startups. The crucial
spillover benefits of effective clusters of multinationals and
startups are essential for innovation and attracting more R&D
