This lesson will demonstrate how to view attempts statistics for your course evaluation, and print
the results to a PDF file.
Accessing the Grade Center
Log into your Blackboard course and go to the Control Panel. Click on Grade Center and select
Full Grade Center

Viewing Attempt Statistics, Part 1
Locate the column for the survey, e.g. Course Design Evaluation. If the column is hidden from the
grade center, you will need to unhide the column first. Click the chevron in the column header and
select Attempts Statistics

You will now see the results for each question in your course evaluation. The results show the
percentage of students who selected each response, as well as all responses for the short answer
questions.

Printing Results
Access your web browser's Print command by clicking File>Print or by clicking on the Print button.

Printing Results, Part 2
1. Select the name of your PDF creator installed on your computer (e.g. Adobe PDF) (If you want
to print a paper copy, select your current printer)
2. Under Print Frames, select the option labeled The Selected Frame
3. When you are finished, click OK. You will then be asked to save the document to your

Downloading Raw Data from BB9.1 to Excel
This lesson will demonstrate how to download test and survey results from Blackboard to a
spreadsheet.
Accessing the Grade Center
Log into your Blackboard course, and go to the Control Panel. Click on Grade Center, and then
select Full Grade Center

Downloading Results, Part 1
Locate the column for the test or survey you wish to download results for. Click on the chevron in
the column heading and select Download Results from the menu.

Downloading Results, Part 2
1. Select the delimter type (comma or tab). The recommended setting is Tab.
2. Select how to format the results download. The recommended settings are By User and only
Valid Attempts.
3. Click on Click to Download Results. Your browser will now ask you where to save your
results to. Select a location on your computer.

Sort and Filter Data Using Excel
This lesson will demonstrate how to sort and format data downloaded from Blackboard and
reorganize the data into a more workable format. (The instructions for this step were developed for
Excel 2010. Appearances and procedures may vary for different versions)
Opening the Data
Open the Excel spreadsheet that was downloaded from Blackboard. If you receive a warning
saying that the document is in a different format than specified by the file extension, click Yes and
open the file.
Selecting Data
Click the button in the upper left hand corner of the workbook to select all the data (as indicated by
the red arrow in the image above) or use Control+A (Command+A for Mac) on your keyboard.

Sorting Data, Part 1
In order to make use of the downloaded data, the data must be sorted, and the like data items must
be grouped together (e.g. answers, questions, etc.)
1. Click the Data tab
2. Click on the Sort button.
The Sort dialog box will now appear on screen.

1. In the Sort dialog box, click the Options button. The Sort Options box will appear.
2. Change the selection to Sort Left to Right.
3. Click OK. You will be taken back to the main Sort dialog Box.

4. Under the option labeled Sort by, Select Row 1 from the drop down menu. Leave the other
menus as they are.
5. When you are finished, click OK. The data will now be sorted from left to right.
Cleaning up Data, Part 1
It is now time to clean up the sorted data. The only columns we need to keep are the Answers
columns. The remaining colums can be deleted.
To delete the columns, select all the columns except for the Answers columns. Right click on the
header of one of the selected columns, and choose Delete from the menu.
At this point is is recommended to save the file with a different file name.
Cleaning up Data, Part 2
In order for the results to be analyzed, the responses must be converted to a numeric format. (E.g.
convert "Excellent" to 5, and "Very Poor" to 1)

To replace the data, press Control+F (Command+F for Mac) to bring up the Find and Replace
dialog box.
1. Click on the Replace Tab
2. Enter the text in the spreadsheet you wish to replace
3. Enter the replacement value
4. Click Replace All
The existing data in the spreadsheet will then be replaced. Repeat this step until all data is in a
numeric format. It is also recommended to change the column heading from "Answer" to
something that would be more helpful.
Once the data has been cleaned up, save a final version of the spreadsheet.

Download SPSS via myUT and Install it on your computer
This lesson will demonstrate how to download SPSS from the MyUT portal and install it onto your
computer. The version available from UT is Windows only.

You will now be taken to the screen above.
1. Enter your UTAD or Rocket Number in the space marked UT Identifier.
2. Enter your UTAD password or birthdate in the space marked Identifer Qualification
3. When finished, click Find Account

You will now see a list of buttons in the main portion of the screen. Click on the button labeled

Install". Note, the software is a large package, and it may take some time to install

vary based on your operating system and browser)

You will now see the file in Windows Explorer. Click on the file labeled SPSS17 Faculty and Staff

When asked to allow the program to make changes, select Yes. The Installer will start
automatically and display the installation process. When the process is finished, SPSS will appear
as a folder in your program list.

SPSS.
Launching SPSS and Opening Data
Launch SPSS from your program list. When SPSS opens, click on (1) File (2) Open (3) Data.

Selecting Data to Open, Part 1
1. Use the drop down menu to the set the "Files of Type" to Excel
2. Select the location on your computer that contains the Excel data e.g. Desktop or Documents.
3. Locate the file you wish to use and select that File.
4. Click Open to open the selected file.

You will be prompted with the following dialog box. Leave the dialog box information as is, and
press the OK button. The SPSS Spreadsheet will now populate with the data from Excel
Analyzing Data, Part 1
1. Select Analyze from the menu bar.
2. Select Descriptive Statistics
3. Select Descriptives

Analyzing Data, Part 2
1. Select all the data items in the left colum (Use shift+click or control+click to select all items)
2. Press the arrow button to move the items into the right column
3. When finished, click OK
SPSS will generate a report with the mean and standard deviation.

Exporting Data
To export the data, click on (1) File and select (2) Export.

Saving Export Data to PDF
1. Use the dropdown menu to select the format to export the data.
2. Click the Browse button to select the folder you would like to save the file to.
3. Click OK to export the file. When the export process is complete, you can go to the folder and
view the file.
