PRE-RAMADAN SERIES DAY 2 / 15 JUNE 2015 – 28 SHABAN 1436
INTRODUCTION
Allah (swt) knows that we need motivations and challenges, and at this point comes ihtisab. It is called the
trade of the knowledgeable ones, why? They are not only praying, but their intention is hoping for the
promise of Allah (swt). Anyone who knows these promises will have these rewards. And it is one of the
means to multiply your rewards though you are performing the same deed.
When you know 10 names of Allah (swt) is different when you know 20 names of Allah (swt). And imagine
when you even know what Allah (swt) has promised you? When you know the promises it will make your
heart present, alert, and motivated to do the good deeds. When you don’t know about the promises then
you’ll feel like a machine doing worships and you end up just getting tired and bored.
Your deeds become more valuable when you have ihtisab. And in Ramadan whoever fasts with faith and
ihtisab then his deeds are forgiven.
In this series we will look at (1) the general overview of the ‘Promise of Allah’ in the Quran, (2) then the
actual promises in the Quran, and (3) finally what Allah (swt) has promised us in the Sunnah.

which rivers flow, to abide therein for ever; (it is) a promise of Allah, true (indeed), and who
is truer of word than Allah?
Your task is to believe in the heart and to do righteous good deeds for Allah (swt) and following the
Sunnah. You want to worship Allah (swt) in order to draw closer to Him, not because you just want to do
any worship according to your desire.
Imagine the promise is paradise, you will never leave your house in paradise, but you will leave your house
in this life, subhan Allah. Then Allah (swt) says His promise is true – Allah (swt) doesn’t need to verify
Himself. Truth is the highest level of honesty. Then Allah (swt) is asking us is there anyone more truthful
than Him? Do you believe in other people’s promises and not Allah’s Al Haqq? Subhan Allah. Remember
that Allah (swt) is speaking to us in all of the ayat.
SURAH AL MAEDAH 9
وعدالحاتوعملواآمنواالذينللا غفرة لهمالص عظيم وأجر م
Allah has promised to those who believe and do good deeds (that) they shall have
forgiveness and a mighty reward.
Allah (swt) has promised those who believe and do righteous good deeds Forgiveness and a great
reward. Allah (swt) said (لهم) – for you. In the duniya it’s not for you – your house, children, etc are not for
you.
There are many opportunities for forgiveness – from prayer to prayer, from Ramadan to Ramadan, etc –
and these are for you. Allah (swt) will make those who believe and do righteous good deeds to take
advantage of these opportunities of forgiveness. There is also a great reward.

وعدات ناتوالمؤمالمؤمنينللا بةومساكنفيهاخالدينالنهارتحتهامنتجريجن اتفيطي عدن جن

Allah has promised to the believing men and the believing women gardens, beneath which
rivers flow, to abide in them, and goodly dwellings in gardens of perpetual abode; and best
of all is Allah's goodly pleasure; that is the grand achievement.
This is the promise of Allah (swt), and when you see the name ‘Allah’ – then it includes all of His names.
Allah (swt) has promised the male and female believers which includes doing righteous good deeds
because Allah (swt) gave them the title of ‘believers’. They will have houses that are tayyabah, ‘goodly’ –
there is no disturbance, there are no issues or problems. The house itself is tayyib and the one who is living
in the house is tayyib – very happy. And they will have the pleasure of Allah (swt), which is even greater
than paradise. This is the great success.
SURAH YUNUS 55
إنأل ماواتفيمالل وعدإنألوالرضالس كنحق للا يعلمونلأكثرهمول Now surely Allah's is what is in the heavens and the earth; now surely Allah's promise is
true, but most of them do not know.
Don’t you know that everything belongs to Allah (swt) and all that He promises is the truth? There is
connection between the one who has dominion/ownership and making promises. Someone who doesn’t
have something can’t make a promise. Even when we make promises it’s not guaranteed we can fulfill
them. But everything belongs to Allah (swt), He is the King so His promises are the truth, but most people
don’t know.
The promise of Allah (swt) is true but why do they not know? Because either they don’t know who is Allah
(swt) or they don’t know the promises themselves. That’s why those who know not are not the same as
those who do. Knowledge activates your deeds.
SURAH AL HAJJ 47
يخلفولنبالعذابويستعجلونكاسنة كألفربكعنديوماوإنوعدهللا م ونم تعد
And they ask you to hasten on the punishment, and Allah will by no means fail in His
promise, and surely a day with your Lord is as a thousand years of what you number.
Those who don’t know Allah (swt) and His warnings and promises will say things that are inappropriate.
They are asking for the punishment to hasten and come to them, subhan Allah. Allah (swt) will give you all
that He has promised you; He will never break His promise, and the promises will be fulfilled sooner or
later.
We need to see this life according to how Allah (swt) sees it, not to how we see it. For example, when Allah
(swt) says that We see the Day of Judgement as near, then we need to believe that, we shouldn’t see it as
بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم

far. One day with Allah (swt) is a thousand years for us, subhan Allah, these are the real days. Imagine how
long the Day of Judgement will be? May Allah (swt) make it easy for us on that Day. Ameen.

ئك الفاسقونهمفأول Allah has promised to those of you who believe and do good that He will most certainly
make them rulers in the earth as He made rulers those before them, and that He will most
certainly establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them, and that He will
most certainly, after their fear, give them security in exchange; they shall serve Me, not
associating aught with Me; and whoever is ungrateful after this, these it is who are the
transgressors.
Allah (swt) promised those who believe and do righteous good deeds to make them leaders just as those
before them. And He will also make them established in their deen which Allah (swt) is pleased with. He
will allow them to practice their deen, and their fear will be replaced to security.
SURAH AL QASAS 13
هإلىفرددناه وعدأنولتعلمتحزنولعينهاتقركيأم كنحق للا يعلمونلأكثرهمول So We gave him back to his mother that her eye might be refreshed, and that she might no
grieve, and that she might know that the promise of Allah is true, but most of them do not
know.
Surah Al Qasas is called ( هللا وعود ) – there are so many promises of Allah (swt) in this surah. Allah (swt)
inspired the mother of Musa (as) to feed him, place him in a basket, and put him in the river. Then Allah
(swt) will return him to you as a messenger. Which mother will place her new born baby in a river, and
imagine a river full of dangers, crocodiles, etc. However, she put him in the river though there is no hope in
her mind. Musa (as) reached the house of Firaoun and Allah (swt) cast the love of Musa (as) in the heart of
this tyrant, and his wife took him as a coolness of their eyes for them.
Musa (as) didn’t accept milk from anyone and then his sister came to say I know someone who can feed
him, and then this ayah was revealed to show the promise is fulfilled.
Musa (as) returned to his mother so that she can have that coolness and tranquility in her eyes and to not
be sad. Allah (swt) cares about our feelings, and He wants us to know that His promises are true. How do
you apply this ayah in your life?
If Allah (swt) is able to bring the baby back to his mother then you need to believe that Allah (swt) is able
to bring back anything that has been lost from you, subhan Allah. You need to deal with Allah (swt) with
بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم

belief, don’t say what’s gone is gone. Don’t say the child, spouse, health, wealth, etc is gone. But most
people don’t know there are promises being fulfilled in this life.
SURAH AR ROOM 6
وعد يخلفلللاكنوعدهللا يعلمونلالناسأكثرول
(This is) Allah's promise! Allah will not fail His promise, but most people do not know.
This is a promise that the Romans would defeat the Persians, and they did, to show that the promises of
Allah (swt) are true. If you don’t believe that the promises of Allah (swt) are true, then it won’t happen for
you. If you think that Allah (swt) will give you, then He will give you. Don’t deal with Allah (swt) as if you’re
not sure, even if you’re 1% unsure, then it won’t happen. You need to believe 100% that Allah (swt) will
make it happen.
SURAH AR ROOM 60
وعدإنفاصبر يوقنونلالذينيستخفنكولحق للا Therefore be patient; surely the promise of Allah is true and let not those who have no
certainty hold you in light estimation.
You need to be patient for the promises to be fulfilled. What does patience mean? Don’t complain, don’t
say when is my child coming back, when is the house going to be built, when will I be cured etc. Allah (swt)
will give victory to the oppressed over the oppressor, to the just over the unjust, to the believer over the
disbeliever – you might see it as opposite, but you need to be patient.
Then Allah (swt) tells the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) to not be affected by those who don’t have yaqeen. Someone
might be severely sick and the doctors tell him there’s no cure, but Allah (swt) says that for every sickness
there is a cure, there is cure in Surah Al Fatiha. But because we have been affected by those who don’t
believe in Allah (swt) then the promise won’t happen, subhan Allah. Everything is possible with Allah (swt)
but it’s the people who make us weak.
Another example is Yaqoub (as) who believed his sons will be come back and they came back, even if it
was after some years. We need to have yaqeen.

What can affect you from seeing the promises as being fulfilled? The duniya and shaitan, because you’re
seeing things contrary to the promise. The duniya and the shaitan will affect you from believing in the
promises of Allah (swt).
Allah (swt) says taking interest will burn everything away and giving charity will give you more. You see
getting interest as having more and giving charity as less – but it’s the opposite. You see those who have
things as a result of interest but they are unhappy in the house. The duniya affects you because you see
others as having things, subhan Allah.
SURAH FATIR 9

life deceive you, nor let the arch-deceiver deceive you in respect of Allah.
You need to be patient, but what can affect you? People, duniya, and the shaitan.
SURAH GHAFIR 55
وعدإنفاصبر حلذنبكواستغفرحق للا والبكاربالعشيربكبحمدوسب Therefore be patient; surely the promise of Allah is true; and ask protection for your fault
and sing the praise of your Lord in the evening and the morning.
Again you need to be patient to see the fulfillment of the promises, don’t say when will it happen?
What else do you need? Seek forgiveness for your sins and do tasbeeh. So while you are waiting, being
patient, seek forgiveness. If you’re waiting to see the doctor or at the stop light, instead of just looking at
everyone, seek forgiveness. Why istighfar? Because the sins can delay the promise, istaghfar Allah.
For example, there is cure in honey, some get cured in 1 day, others a week, so you need to make istighfar
while waiting for the cure. What else do you need? Tasbeeh Allah (swt), you need to remove all negative
thoughts about Him because you could be waiting, but a bad thought comes, so you need to push it away
and do tasbeeh Allah (swt) and praise Him. You push away the negative and affirm the positive.
Hadith: ( الميزان، في ثقيلتان اللسان، على خفيفتان كلمتان " : وسلم عليه هللا صلى هللا رسول قال : قال عنه هللا رضي هريرة أبي وعن

there places have foam on their seas that are like a sea itself. You need to believe that the promise of
Allah (swt) is true.
SURAH GHAFIR 77
وعدإنفاصبر اق حللا يرجعونفإلينانتوفينكأونعدهمالذيبعضنرينكفإم So be patient, surely the promise of Allah is true. So should We make you see part of what
We threaten them with, or should We cause you to die, to Us shall they be returned.
Allah (swt) is telling the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) to be patient after being called displeasing names by the
disbelievers. So Allah (swt) is telling him he will be rewarded whether the promise happens in this life or if
he dies afterwrads. Whether you get it in this life or not, you will appreciate it. When you make dua’a,
either it’s fulfilled, or you’re protected from some harm, or it’s delayed for the hereafter.

What do the hypocrites and those who have a sickness in their heart think about the promises of Allah
(swt)? They say that whatever Allah (swt) and His messenger (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) have promised is only deception,
istaghfar Allah. That’s why the hypocrites are in the lowest level of the hellfire – they’re underestimating
the promises of Allah (swt).

someone goes in a problem, he quickly knows he will be taken out of it because of his belief in the
promises of Allah (swt). Don’t talk about your problems, but say that Allah (swt) will take me out of this
problem, sickness, etc – always speak of the positive. And when you are taken out of the problem, you will

SURAH AL BAQARAH 152
تكفرونولليواشكرواأذكركمفاذكروني Therefore remember Me, I will remember you, and be thankful to Me, and do not be
ungrateful to Me.
Your action Promise of Allah (swt)
Remember Allah (swt) He will remember you
There are two parts to a promise, what does Allah (swt) want you to do and what is His promise?
Allah (swt) wants you to remember Him whether you pray, talk about Him, etc. The best remembrance is
with heart and tongue. Don’t say ‘istaghfar Allah’ with no feeling in the heart.
What does Allah (swt) promise you? He will remember you. Whoever remembers Allah (swt) by himself,
then Allah (swt) remembers him within Himself. And when you remember Allah (swt) in a group, for
بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم
9
example talking about Him, learning about Him, then Allah (swt) will remember you in front of the angels.
Where is our remembrance compared to the remembrance of Allah (swt)? Where is our self and Allah’s
self, subhan Allah. When you remember Allah (swt), He will remember you immediately. For example,
when you say ‘subhan Allah’, then He remembers you immediately, not after some time. Imagine the King
of Kings remembers you as a slave, what an honor!
When you remember Allah (swt) then shukr will come by default. That’s why we said remembrance is the
head of gratitude. And when you’re grateful, it averts pride and arrogance because you’re attributing it to
Allah (swt), not to yourself.
SURAH AL BAQARAH 186

Your action Promise of Allah (swt)
Respond to Allah (swt) – make dua’a to Him and
believe in Him
Guidance to rushd
The Companions were asking the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) is Allah (swt) far or near? And he was told to tell them
that He’s near. Allah (swt) is close to you and you need to be close to Him.
What do you need to do? Respond to Allah (swt), how? By making dua’a to Him. Only those who are
arrogant don’t make dua’a. If you don’t talk to Allah (swt) and invoke Him, then Allah (swt) will decree a
difficult situation for you in order to hear your voice, you will be desperate, subhan Allah. Allah (swt) loves
to hear the voice of the invocators. Ramadan is the month of dua’a, while you’re fasting your dua’a is
accepted, and dua’a itself is a worship.
Many people want to make dua’a but they can’t, they get busy or distracted. In order for the dua’a to be
effective it needs to have faith. You need to be alert, not heedless when you’re talking to As Samee’ Al
Baseer.
When you respond to Allah (swt), make dua’a to Him, and believe in Him, then Allah (swt) will guide you to
rushd – to do the right things, the right deeds. This is Allah’s promise and He will never break His promise.
When you make dua’a, think about the guidance.

Who will lend a goodly loan to Allah (swt)? Subhan Allah. Your money is Allah’s money and He is the Most
Rich, He doesn’t need your money, but He wants to encourage you, subhan Allah. And the loan will be
returned to you – look at the gentleness of Allah (swt) and how He’s dealing with us. When you give
charity for the sake of Allah (swt) then He will increase it for you. When you know how generous Allah
(swt) is to us, you need to be generous too.
And when you’re so desperate for good deeds on the Day of Judgement, you will see them as a result of
your charity. Sadaqah purifies your heart.
Allah (swt) is Al Qabidh Al Basit, what is the connection? When someone gives charity, they’re afraid they
might be poor, but Allah (swt) is telling us He Stretches and He Withholds, so don’t think if you don’t give
charity that you will stay rich and when you give you will be poor. Allah (swt) enlarges and restricts the
provision. Allah (swt) created you with no money, we are created naked, so don’t worry about your
wealth, it belongs to Allah (swt) either way.
SURAH AL BAQARAH 262

يحزنونهمولعليهم (As for) those who spend their property in the way of Allah, then do not follow up what
they have spent with reproach or injury, they shall have their reward from their Lord, and
they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.
Your action Promise of Allah (swt)
Give sadaqah for Allah (swt) without following it with
reproach
You will be rewarded, you will have no fear or grief
What is the connection between Ramadan, Quran, and being generous? Hadith: Ibn 'Abbas narrates,
saying, “The Messenger of Allah ( وسلم عليه هللا صلى ) was the most generous person, and he would be at his
most generous in Ramadan because Jibril would come to him every night and he would study the Qur'an
with him. Truly, when Allah's Messenger ( وسلم عليه هللا صلى ) would meet Gabriel, he would be more
generous than a fleeting wind.” [Agreed Upon]
Ramadan is the month of the Quran and the more you read Quran, the more you will be generous because
your heart is not attached to the duniya. The Quran is purifying you, subhan Allah.
When you’re giving charity, don’t come back and say I’m the one who gave you. The best charity is when
you give it with a good heart, not by force. What did Allah (swt) promise? The reward will be with Allah
(swt), you will not fear or grieve – you will not be afraid of poverty in the future and you will not be sad
about giving – you will have stable feelings. You will not have ill feelings when giving charity, subhan Allah.
بسم هللا الرحمن الرحيم
11
When you give charity, your money will not decrease, it will increase. The best charity is when you need
the money yourself but you give it away. Someone might give 1000 but with no feeling, and another just 1
dirham but he is need of it. The best charity is to give water, imagine giving water to people in Ramadan.

to you in full, and you shall not be wronged.
Your action Promise of Allah (swt)
Give sadaqah for Allah (swt) to seek His pleasure It will benefit you and you will be paid back in full and
more
No matter how much you talk to the disbelievers, if they don’t want the guidance, then you can’t guide
them. Allah (swt) guides whom He wills.
Whether you are giving to a believer or disbeliever, whether little or much, it’s all good for you. When you
tell others about guidance, whether they take it or not, it’s all for your own benefit because you are talking
about Allah (swt).
Sometimes you might give someone, and then you’re told ‘they’re not needy’, and you think why did I give
them? Don’t think like that, know that it’s good for you. The second promise is you will be paid back for
what you give, subhan Allah. Who gave you money in the first place? Allah (swt), but He said I will pay you
back, and even more, subhan Allah. Don’t fear poverty because the money is for Allah (swt).

Reward from Him, no fear or grief
When you give charity then it’s a sign of your faith. Surah Al Baqarah is all about the unseen and giving
charity and having it increased is part of the unseen. There is no restriction in giving sadaqah – whether

If you love Allah (swt), then you should follow His messenger (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص). There are people who say we don’t
follow the Sunnah, just the Quran, but the Quran is saying to follow the Sunnah, subhan Allah.
When you follow his Sunnah, then Allah (swt) will give you two things: He will love you and forgiveness of
sins, subhan Allah. In Ramadan, you can follow his Sunnah, how did he break his fast, what worships did he
do (see section 3), etc. The ihtisab you need is when you follow the Sunnah then Allah (swt) will love you
and forgive you your sins.

What do you have to do? Abstain from major sins such as backbiting and slandering, then Allah (swt) will
expiate your minor sins, subhan Allah. And what else? Allah (swt) will make you enter an honorable entry,
which is entering paradise with honor, subhan Allah. How do you apply this in Ramadan? You don’t just

getting angry. You want to say, but you’re stopping yourself.

martyrs, and the good ones, subhan Allah. Nothing is better than their companionship. You might not be
among them, but Allah (swt) will include you to be with them.
There is so much barakah when you obey. The opposite of obeying is arguing, you’re not taking it because
it doesn’t suit you. In Ramadan, you have many opportunities for obedience.
SURAH AL ANA’AM 155
ذا بعوهمبارك أنزلناهكتاب وه قوافات ترحمونلعلكموات And this is a Book We have revealed, blessed; therefore follow it and guard (against evil)
that mercy may be shown to you.
Your action Promise of Allah (swt)
Follow the Quran and have taqwa You will be shown mercy
Ramadan is the month of the Quran, and we want it to purify our hearts. The Quran is mubarak, it’s
blessed. One of the scholars said the more you give time to the Quran, the more Allah (swt) will put
barakah in your time – your time will not be wasted.
You need to follow the Quran and have taqwa. What does it mean to follow the Quran? When you recite
the Quran, you need to interact with it, when it says do this, you do it, when it says don’t do this, then
don’t do it. And you need to have taqwa, what does that mean? Guard yourself from sins because one of
the obstacles from understanding the Quran is the sins. What will Allah (swt) give you? Mercy.
Some people are reciting the Quran and they say this ayah is for this person, this ayah is for so and so –
they’re distributing the ayat to everyone but themselves, subhan Allah. How can you have mercy if you’re
not applying the Quran, and mercy is when all good comes to you and all fitnas are driven away from you.
May Allah (swt) make this a blessed month for us. Ameen.

Allah (swt) will never deal with you unjustly
When you bring one good deed with you, ‘bring’ means it came with a struggle, then Allah (swt) will bring
you ten times, meaning He will account it 10 times. And whoever comes with one sin, then you will be
accounted for just one sin, and you will not be treated unfairly. Allah (swt) will not give you less good
deeds or more sins. This shows you Allah is Ar Rahman, Al Lateef, Al Kareem, Al Jawwad, so many names,
subhan Allah. When you know the names of Allah (swt), the Quran is further enlivened. Imagine in
Ramadan the rewards are multiplied.

Your action Promise of Allah (swt)

You have to take the ayat with taqwa, meaning no desire, and then correct yourself. Why taqwa first and
then correcting yourself? Because you need to demolish what’s bad and build it correctly. Then there is no
fear or grieve for them.

Abu Huraira reported the Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) as saying: Everyone among you is
constantly in prayer so long as the prayer detains him (for this noble objective) and nothing
prevents him to return to his family but the prayer. – Agreed upon

Thinking about the next prayer As in prayer while waiting
You will be in the prayer as long as you’re thinking about the prayer, you’re heart is connected to the
prayer. For example, between fajr and dhuhr, you’re busy, but you’re heart is waiting for the prayer, then
as if you’re praying for those six hours in between. All of this is easy, but the difficult part is to gather the
heart, we need to rely on Allah (swt).

Once the Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) delayed the night prayer ('Isha') till midnight. He (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص)
turned to us after Salat (prayer) and said, "The people slept after performing their Salat, but
you who waited, will be accounted as engaged in Salat throughout the period of your
waiting." – Al Bukhari 572
Your action Promise of Allah (swt)
Delaying isha’a prayer As if in prayer while waiting
It’s the Sunnah to pray the ‘isha and then go to sleep, that’s why it’s sunnah to delay the isha prayer. So
even when you’re delaying it, and you’re thinking about, you’re in prayer. So you can be in prayer the
whole day.

A blind man came to the Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) and said: "O Messenger of Allah! I have
no one to guide me to the mosque." He, therefore, sought his permission to perform Salat
(prayer) in his house. He (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) granted him permission. When the man turned away, he
called him back, and said, "Do you hear the Adhan (call to prayer)?" He replied in the
affirmative. The Messenger of Allah (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) then directed him to respond to it. – Muslim
Book 9, Hadith 1066
A blind man was seeking permission to pray in the house, then the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) said can you hear the
adhan? He said yes, so he said you need to pray in the masjid. So what about those who are not blind and
not responding? May Allah (swt) forgive us. Ameen.
This also shows you that the Prophet (ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص) encouraged those who are disabled to be integrated into
society, they’re human too.
