ADI SHANKARACHARYA

Adi Shankaracharya was born as Shankara in around 788 AD in a Brahmin family in Kaladi village of Kerala. He was born to Sivaguru and Aryambal. It is said that Aryambal had a vision of Lord Shiva, in which he promised her that he would incarnate himself as her first-born child. Adi Shankara showed great intelligence right from his childhood. He mastered all the Vedas and the Vedanta in gurukul itself and could recite the epics and Puranas by heart. One day when Shankara was taking bath, a crocodile caught hold of his leg. Shankara called out to his mother. Aryambal came running and to her horror found her son in the grip of the crocodile. Sri Shankara hurriedly stated that his life was nearing to an end, but if he became a Sanyasi, he could start a new life. Thus Sri Shankara obtained permission from his mother to become a sanyasi. He left Kerala and moved North in search of a Guru. At the banks of the river Narmada, he found the river gushing forth into floods. By using his powers, he encapsulated the river in his Kamandalu and released it in the banks of the river. Sri Govinda Bagavathpadar, an ascetic who saw this, took him on as a disciple. He taught the vedas to Sri Shankara. He also taught about Advaita, the principle that every one in this world is the manifestation of God and that God and Atman are one and the same. The philosophy and teachings of Adi Shankaracharya were based on the Advaita Vedanta. He preached 'Non-Dualism'. It means that each and every person has a divine existence, which can be identified with the Supreme God. The bodies are diverse, but the soul of all the separate bodies is the same, the Divine One.

----------------------------------

SATHYA SAI BABA Sri Sathya Sai Baba (1926 - 2011) was a highly revered spiritual leader and world teacher, whose life and message is still inspiring millions of people throughout the world to turn God-ward and to lead more purposeful and moral lives. He is widely regarded to be a reincarnation of Sai Baba of Shirdi - a saint who became famous in the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Maharashtra and had died eight years before Sathya was born. Sathya Sai Baba publicly declared his mission in 1940, at the age of 14. Since then, he daily exhibited in practical and concrete terms the highest ideals of truth, right conduct, peace, love, and nonviolence. He often stated, "My life is my message." Each day, hundreds of pilgrims make their way to Puttaparthi, a tiny hamlet in Andhra Pradesh where Sathya Sai Baba's ashram (spiritual headquarters) is located. They come not only from India but from every corner of the world. The name of Sathya Sai Baba's ashram is Prasanthi Nilayam, which means "abode of the highest peace". Sathya Sai Baba said that his followers do not need to give up their original religion saying, “My objective is the establishment of sanatana dharma, which believes in one God”. He declared that his mission was to re-establish the principle of Righteousness, to motivate love for God and service to fellow man. He consistently called on all mankind to Love All, Serve All and repeatedly asserted that the essence of all Scriptures is Help Ever, Hurt Never! Sathya Sai Baba initiated several public projects such as hospitals and schools to help and serve people in need. In essence, he gave his life selflessly to the service of mankind.
