TO OUR OUTGOING
BOARD MEMBERSThe 14th Annual General Meeting saw 3 highly valued Bowls NZ Board members
retire from duty after many years of dedicated service to the organisation.
Martin Christensen, Bob Martin and Trish McKelvey were acknowledged at the
AGM for their numerous volunteered hours as esteemed members of our Board
and their presence will be missed.
Martin Christensen has served as Vice President and
then President for the last four years. Elected in 2005
from Gisborne – East Coast, Martin has been a friendly
and familiar face around the bowling clubs at many and
various bowls events around the country. Most recently,
Martin was part of the support team for the Black Jacks at
the recent Asia Pacific Championships. Thank you Martin
for your loyal and dedicated time in office.
Bob Martin joined the Bowls NZ Board and served
for six successive years, retiring at the 2009 AGM. With
a background in teaching, Bob bought sound principles
and practice to the range of skills around the Board table.
Bob has been an enthusiastic supporter of bowls and his
contribution to Bowls NZ is much appreciated.
Trish McKelvey has been a member of the Board
since 2000 and in that time has made a tremendous
contribution to the sport. Whilst not a bowler, her
knowledge gained from past sporting involvement at an
international level as both a player and administrator,
combined with her education and business skills has
made her an invaluable member of the Board and her
contribution will be missed.

The Black Jacks New Zealand Bowls
team arrived in Auckland after their
recent Asia Pacific Championships
campaign. Among the team, was
mens back-to-back Singles title
winner, Ali Forsyth who successfully
defended his 2007 Asia Pacific
Championships gold after defeating
world number two, Australian Leif
Selby in the final 21-7.
The Malaysian weather conditions
and greens played a major part in the
event and for Forsyth “maintaining
concentration” was a key focus. Play
would be interrupted by frequent
thunderstorms and often resumed
within 10 minutes. Forsyth was
“extremely pleased” with the result,
not only since it was a back to back
win, but also because it was his
first international outing in over
12 months. According to Forsyth,
“it was my chance to prove myself.
Before the event started, some were
suggesting an Australia vs. Malaysia
final”.
Forsyth joins a select group of
acclaimed bowlers to have won the
trophy, not just twice, but back-to-
back and of this achievement, Black
Jacks Coach Dave Edwards said “it
was outstanding. There wasn’t
anyone who could have beaten him
in the form that he was in”. This was
proven when Forsyth carried his good
form through and later skipped the
men’s triples to a silver medal.
The men’s pairs and the men’s
triples team took out the silver medal
at the Championships after losing to
their Trans Tasman rivals Australia.
The men’s pairs went down to the
2008 Trusts NZ Open Pairs Champions
Marc Jacobsen and Robbie Thomson
21-8 in what was a one sided final in
favour of the Aussies.
It was a similar story in the men’s
triples. The New Zealanders beat the
host nation team in a hard fought
battle 14-12 and went on to lose to
the world number two ranked player
Leif Selby in the triples 24-4 in what
was also a one sided result final.
However, all five male Kiwis’
took out a silver medal after putting
in strong performances in the semi
final against tough opponents on
unpredictable surfaces. Jamie Hill and
dual world champion Gary Lawson
happily gave Hong Kong China the
bronze medal after beating them
22-16.
Within the Women’s ranks,
the Black Jacks fielded a ‘relatively
inexperienced international team’
without the likes of veteran bowlers
Sharon Sims and Jo Edwards
onboard. “It was pleasing to see
the improvement by our fresh new
faces and although disappointed
not to have taken medals, we
were absolutely delighted with the
progress shown by the women’s team
over the two weeks of the event”,
said Black Jacks Coach Edwards.
This event also saw the return
of world ranked number one
singles player, Black Jack Val Smith,
after a long spell out of top level
international bowls. Coach Edwards
explained that although displaying
solid form, it was evident that Smith
lacked recent “real hard match play”.
The Black Jacks will return to
Malaysia in October in preparation
leading into the Commonwealth
Games to be held in New Delhi, India
in 2010.

BAYSIDEBOWLING CLUB
BAYSIDEBOWLING CLUB
By Sam Morton
Last month Richard Collett, Sue
Wightman, Darren Redway and
Feona Sayles set off to represent New
Zealand in two prestigious events.
World Singles Champion of Champions – Ayr, Scotland
Hyundai National Open Single
Champions Collett and Wightman took
to the super slow greens of Scotland to
compete in the World Singles Champion
of Champions against 23 other nations.
They each played 11 games in section
play of which Collett won three and
Wightman won seven which catapulted
her into a quarter-final berth.
Wightman took on Jersey’s Lindsey
Greechan and her hopes for world
number one were slashed abruptly
losing on the last bowl in the tie-break.
Wightman lost the first set narrowly
7-5 before posting a 10-2 win in the
second. With the score at 1-1, Greechan
robbed the game away by playing a
bomb of a draw to nestle tightly behind
the jack and end the Kiwi’s campaign
for gold.
Collett admits he was disappointed
with his results, but says he has had a
great time and met some great people.
“The tournament was a big learning
curve for me and I feel I can take a
hell of a lot away from the experience.
The style of play required is just so
different. In New Zealand you can back
yourself to draw within one or two
feet of the jack, whereas over there
you have to be charging and look to sit
bowls off,” he said.
Wightman finished in the last
eight overall, and the support from
back home was not slow in coming. A
message board was set up by Adam
Booth to allow Wightman to post
messages and also to give friends
and family a chance to send their
thoughts. “Everyone’s best wishes
and encouragement was absolutely
wonderful. The tournament has been
a once in a lifetime experience and
will be something I won’t ever forget,”
Wightman said.
Asia Merdeka Indoor Championships, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
On the 2 – 5 August, NZCT Singles
Champions Redway and Sayles
competed in the Asia Merdeka Indoor
Championships hosted in Malaysia.
They both put in strong performances
in the singles event and teamed up to
contest the mixed pairs event.
Redway just missed the cut for a
quarter-final feature as he suffered an
upset from one of the strong Malaysian
contingent after starting off on a sound
footing against both Korea and Brunei.
He defeated Korea in a comprehensive
fashion winning straight sets 11-3,
10-2 and then played Brunei winning
the tie-break after losing the second
set on the last bowl. In the last game
Redway matched Malaysia but lost by
a few shots going into the last few
ends. Due to the rest of the Malaysian
contingent’s solid results Redway’s
campaign for gold was cut short.
However, Sayles topped her section
with some decisive victorys to find
herself contesting a spot in the semi-
final against Australian Anne Johns.
Sayles put in a gutsy performance and
came out trumps winning 6-4, 7-7.
Unfortunately she could not continue
the fine form and lost to local hope
Emma Firyina in a one way match.
Sayles took home the bronze which was
a great effort from the Kiwi.
Redway and Sayles then teamed up
in the mixed-pairs event with similar
success winning two out of their three
games and were unlucky not to qualify.
They first played Hong Kong in a game
that played host to an outstanding
comeback from the Kiwis being 8-0
down after four ends and winning 18-
10 after the 16 completed ends.
The second round was a closely-
fought game against Singapore with
Redway and Sayles pinching the win
on their last bowl to win 9-8. The final
round was against the talented Fiji duo
in a game where the winner advanced
to the last eight. The game was tightly
matched right the way through but the
consistency of the world ranked Fijian
lead saw them lose by one shot as the
buzzer sounded.
The World Champion of Champion
singles title went to 19-year-old
bowling phenomenon Kelsey Cottrell
from Australia who was in outstanding
form right throughout the tournament.
Her counterpart Brett Wilkie also took
out the mens title after what was a
shaky start to section play.
MIB in Malaysia! Not only is Feona Sayles an
accomplished bowler and keen outdoor
enthusiast, but she is also the Mates
In Bowls leader at Palmerston North
Bowling Club. Whilst in Malaysia,
Sayles really took on the MIB challenge,
“can you handle the Jandal” and
climbed Mt Kinabalu.
Sayles is pictured near the summit
and at 4095.2m above sea level, Sayles
says that “it was faster going down
than going up!”

One Bowls: One Vision has been accepted, what does this mean? The project is the continuation of the strategic direction that was
agreed back in 2003. This strategic direction has been widely
accepted and supported but the delivery process needs to change.
Bowls NZ’s mission is “to deliver an exceptional sporting experience that is enjoyable, entertaining and accessible to all New Zealanders, with a vision of “becoming the best bowling country”.
The new regional centre structure will enable Bowls NZ to
pursue this mission through co-ordinated and consistent delivery
throughout New Zealand of; coach, umpire, greenkeeper,
talent development, youth, and competition services. Mates In
Bowls and other participation initiatives will also be supported.
The regional centres may assist others if requested providing
financial management, administrative support and membership
management services. Bowls NZ is will now work with Auckland
Bowls, Bowls Wellington & Bowls Canterbury to establish a service.
The agreed strategic plan developed in 2003 focused the bowls community on one set of strategic outcomes applicable at every level of the sport. The five key outcomes are:
l Developing Talentl Promoting & Growing the Game at All Levelsl Strengthening the Structure & Providing a “State of the Art”
Playing Environmentl Building Organisational Capabilityl Ensuring a Financially Stable and Sustainable Future
The measures of success of the One Bowls One Vision project will be:
l Having clubs that are strong and successfull More people playing bowls more oftenl Creating pathways so people can participate and progress
from club to centre to international levels if they so desirel Leaving a legacy for the sport in order that future generations
continue to enjoy the game of bowls This project could not have progressed without the dedication, commitment and support of those who saw the benefits of “The Way Forward”. We express our sincere thanks to the overwhelming majority who supported change.
A resounding wave of support for One Bowls: One Vision and “The Way Forward”, was signalled at the 14th Annual General Meeting of Bowls New Zealand, held in Auckland on 6 September. The stamp of approval on all of the One Bowls: One Vision constitutional motions means that the realities of One Bowls: One Vision are now able to be finally implemented across the country.

One of the key roles of a coach is to help players set
useful goals. In the previous two columns we talked
about the importance of focussing on performance
and process, but when we ask players about their
goals they will usually have outcome goals such as
wanting to win a particular event or be selected for
a particular team. Although outcome goals might
motivate a player to persevere, they are not very
effective in producing improvement.
A really useful way to help a player convert an
outcome goal to process and performance goals is to
ask the GROW questions.
Goal
What is your goal? What do they want to achieve and by when
Reality
What is the current reality?Take time to examine the current reality honestly.
Make sure to include the non bowls issues, like work
and family commitments and get an honest appraisal
of how much time the player is prepared to commit.
What aspects of their game need to improve? Keep
the discussion objective - what is the evidence for
how well/poorly they are playing now. Introduce the
idea of performance measures and goals. Is the goal
realistic or should that be revisited.
Options
What could you do?Once you have an honest assessment of the
current reality the player can begin to suggest
options. What training could they do, when and
how often? How could they measure progress? What
events could they play/not play? What support could
they get from you or others? Get them to list as many
options as they can.

What will you do? Finally choose just 1or two of those options that
they are prepared to fully commit to.

It today’s economic times it is getting
very difficult to secure sponsorship
funding. Arawa’s Des Baillie was
recently doing the rounds of current
club sponsors to attempt to renew
sponsorship for the upcoming season.
The initial reaction from one of the
long standing sponsors was to say no
to renewing for the coming season
citing many reasons. Des was able to
produce a copy of the clubs strategic
Plan which impressed the business
owner so much that he reversed his
decision not to renew. Des stated
that “because we had a future plan,
the businessman could see what
we are doing, where we are going
and he wanted to be a part of our
future. So having a plan got us some
sponsorship we would have lost.”
Arawa was typical of most
bowling clubs with falling and
ageing membership. A year ago
the club was teetering on the edge,
with membership issues and very
little weekend play for the limited
number of working members in the
club. Members of Arawa recognized
the need to address their problems
and so attended the Bowls NZ Club
Conferences of 2007 and 2008. The
club’s executive then resolved to seek
assistance from Bowls NZ Community
Development Officer (CDO) to
formulate Arawa’s way forward.
A year on with their Club Plan,
the success of Mates In Bowls (MIB)
in its “Events Bowls” programme has
been one of the major stimuli in a
resurrection drive which is stamping
Rotorua’s Arawa Bowling Club as one
of the most forward-thinking clubs in
the country. The Club converted their
unused ladies pavilion and its adjacent
green in to their “Events Bowls
Centre” where MIB and corporate
events would be staged. Suzanne
Meek reports, “We have been hosting
corporate groups and have been
promoting the venue amongst our
sponsors.
“MIB is up and running and has
been highly successful,” Meek said.
This follows a significant success in the
national drive by Bowls New Zealand
to promote Mates In Bowls through
the country – a move which has hugely
boosted “casual bowlers” in many
clubs now operating the concept.
The planning team warn other
clubs who might follow similar policies
to be patient, realising that not
everything will be accomplished in
the first season. “There are challenges
in any change,” Meek said. But her
advice to other clubs is to “involve
Bowls New Zealand, not try to
reinvent the wheel and be patient – it
will happen.”
Arawa has worked closely with
Region 2 CDO, Steve Beel, who
commends the work undertaken.
“The club has a great five year plan
and is currently working on their
initial priorities. Over time all the
issues will be looked at on a case by
case basis and changes will be made if
necessary. This will ensure all “things”
done in the club are modern, relevant
and meets the needs of not only
the current membership but those
of future members and the local
community,” Beel said. “’The Events
Centre’ is brilliant,” Beel says, “I have
spoken to the local Hyundai dealer,
Sean Clark, who has taken his team
and clients on a ‘Bowling Experience”
at Arawa and they have really enjoyed
the game, the club and the facilities
AND will be back next season.”
Arawa Bowling Club’s Alan McCaulay - Finance, Suzanne Meek – past president and Des Baillie Communications and Sponsorship.

SOCIAL SUMMER LEAGUE
Mates In Bowls is a social summer
bowls league aimed at introducing
‘new’ people to the sport of bowls.
So far we have seen many New
Zealanders nationwide participate
and enjoy MIB at their local club.
One MIB club is the Otatara
Bowling Club in Invercargill, who ran
their very first 4 week MIB season in
March 2009. Held on a Friday night,
the club attracted local people to play
MIB at their club. Playing ‘two bowls
triples’, casual bowlers really enjoyed
the atmosphere and it gave players a
friendly introduction to the sport.
Rachel Lankshear was part of the
“X-Rayted” lawn bowls team, a group
of collegues who work in a radiology
practice. Her team enjoyed MIB so
much that Rachel spoke to the AGM
of the Bowls Southland of her positive
experience at Otatara. Below is an
excerpt of Rachel’s kind words;
“A fax message came through
to work one afternoon advertising
Plan to be successful. Now, is the time to plan your Mates In Bowls season and take advantage of the benefits provided by being involved. Clubs intending to run an MIB programme after Christmas, need to register by the end of September 09.

Mates In Bowls. At first the fax went
into the bin, but a few weeks later
the same fax arrived and after seeing
the large orange MIB signs around
the city, curiosity got the better of
me and I looked up the website.
After navigating my way through the
website (www.matesinbowls.co.nz),
I said to the girls, ‘I think that we
should do this’. The photos looked
great and showed that you didn’t
have to be ‘getting on in age’ to
enjoy it’.
Dressed in up in our team skeleton
t-shirts, we nervously took our first
few steps onto the club grounds and
were warmly welcomed by Barry. We
ventured out to the green and after
a bit of coaching by the wonderful
Robin, we were into it and what a
great time we had. I can honestly say
that I have never laughed as much
playing sport, ever!

Commonly you see players walking in
front of you after you have delivered
your bowl and have wondered, ‘can
they really do that?’ The answer is
NO.
When discussing possession of
the rink, it is important to note that
the possession of the rink will belong
to the player or team whose bowl is
being played. After each bowl comes
to rest, the possession of the rink
transfers to the opposing player or
team taking into consideration the
marking of touchers.
So how does that affect you as a
player? Players at the mat-end of the

rink who are not delivering a bowl
should stand at least 1 metre behind
the mat. Once the player has delivered
the bowl and it has come to rest or
been declared dead, the possession of
the rink changes to the opposing team
or player. Under the Laws of the Sport,
players must maintain this 1 metre
clearance that means no one can
walk in front of them after they have
delivered their bowl.
This is also a mark of courtesy and
sportsmanship as well as abiding by
the Laws of the Sport in which every
player can deliver their bowl without
obstruction from people walking in
front of them, of standing next to
them, or annoying or distracting them
in any way while delivering their bowl.
The Umpire can take action in
breaches of this law in the form of
a warning or even declaring the
offenders last bowl dead. If that bowl
has disturbed the head, the opponent
should then choose whether to -
replace the head; leave the head as
altered; or declare the end dead. This
law, unfortunately, is breached on
many occasions throughout games
causing frustration to many.
Approaching this coming season,
remember the Possession of the Rink.

FOCUS ON
UMPIRING
18
By Maurice Symes (Greenkeeper)
I played at the top level of the sport for 30 years
from 1986 through to 2006. I have played in some 10
different countries and on approximately 20 different
surfaces including artificial and indoor carpets. With the
above mentioned experience I am in a position to offer
a bowlers perspective of what greens personnel need
to prepare for the needs of most bowlers.
Of the greens I have played on throughout the
World, I firmly believe that the greens in Canterbury
Region and greens in Queensland are by far on average
the best in the World. It has been stated by many
International players I have spoken with World wide
that New Zealand greens are the best, mainly due to the
consistency in which the greens are prepared. Greens in
the South Island are in general superior to those of the
North Island due to both climatic and soil conditions.
Starting my bowling career at the Hawera Park
Bowling Club in Taranaki where I spent my first twelve
years.
My next 15 years playing was at the Johnsonville
Bowling Club where for three years I was involved in
greenkeeping and green renovations. The last Eleven
years have been in Canterbury where greenkeeping has
now become part of my life as well as playing, coaching
and administering our great game.
I firmly believe that if greens are prepared with
a general consistency of green cover there would be
no contentious issues with top bowlers. The inability
of being able to finish the bowl to the centre line of
the rink and inconsistent cover that get top players
frustrated. It is for those reasons alone greens become
difficult to play for the person who thinks about line,
speed with each bowl that is played.
To all green keepers I can sympathise with some of
your frustrations as a green keeper. There are as many
green keepers in your club as there are members, so you
will always get the best advice!!
What I have tried to do is give you my personal
thoughts of what TOP BOWLERS WANT FROM A GREEN.
WHAT TOP BOWLERS WANT FROM A GREEN
GREENKEEPERS
In Summary:
1. Top bowlers only ever ask for consistency in the
preparation of greens, the same texture all over
without fast and slow patches caused by heavy
growth in a particular area or by the lack of growth
in other areas of the green.
2. Green speeds of 15 to 18 seconds are the standard
set throughout the country.
3. Runoff into ditches is eliminated each year at
renovation time.
4. Backboards have taper back so that there is no
rebounding of bowls or kitty back onto the green.
5. Ditch composition to be pebbles, sand or grass so
that bowls and kitty does not run away too far
from its entry point.
6. The plinth board is level or just below green to
stop kitty’s lifting out over the top of the ditch and
flying anywhere.
7. Rink set out movement is so that from day to day
you do not get tracking from having to run over
footmarks etc. Maybe changing playing direction
each day would be better than shifting rinks
from between 18” to 3ft and playing in the same
direction daily.

NATIONALSERvICECONTRACTBowls New Zealand and the New
Zealand Sports Turf Institute have
signed a new contract for service
which commenced on 1st July 2009.
The previous terms of contract
which included a biennial visit to
Clubs is unsustainable for both Bowls
New Zealand and the NZ Sports Turf
Institute. A considerable increase in
fees to NZ Sports Turf Institute would
be required to maintain the previous
service which in the current financial
climate is not appropriate.
Discussions have been held
with the Bowls NZ Greenkeeping
Association on what the key priorities
are in service for the future and it is
clear that a combination of Field days
and Cluster meetings are the best way
of keeping people informed.
The new contract has the
following elements –
l NZ Sports Turf Agronomist
representation at field days,
cluster group meetings and North
and south Island Greenkeepers
Seminars
l Complimentary 4 issues of the
NZ Turf Management Journal for
all Bowling Clubs and Bowling
Centres. At least one article per
issue will focus on bowling green
turf management.
l A cash contribution to the
Sports Turf Industry Training
Organisation
l Technical Fact sheets of seasonal
significance mailed out with Bowls
New Zealand publications
The new contract does not
include the following –
l Complimentary advisory visits to
Clubs
l Phone advice or email
communication
l Soil test interpretations
l Funding for research although
this will be looked at again in
2010/2011
l NZ Sports Turf attendance at
Bowls New Zealand or National/
Regional Greenkeeping
Committee Meetings
A list of Field Days allocated per
Centre is attached.
NZ Sports Turf Institute have
made available on a user pays basis
a visit support package and a remote
support package. Details of these are
attached to this circular and Clubs
wishing to avail themselves of these
should follow the contact details on
the form.
The key to making the new
contract work is for there to be an
excellent communication network
between the Centres, Centre
Greenkeeping Associations and the
NZ Sports Turf Agronomists. Attached
is a list of the Agronomists and
their contact details – Centres and
Greenkeeping Associations already
have each others contact details.
The contract states the following
“planning for field days will be the
responsibility of the local Centre,
local Greenkeeping Association and
the NZSTI Agronomist for the Centre
concerned. An Agenda for each Field
day is to be prepared and distributed
in advance to all Clubs within a
Centre.
Finally it makes sense for
neighbouring Centres to invite
each others Clubs to Field days e.g.
Northland and Far North; North
Harbour, Auckland and Counties
Manukau; Waikato, Thames Valley
and Bay of Plenty; Wellington and
Kapiti; Dunedin, South Otago and
Central Otago.
Co-ordination of this in the future
will hopefully become a role for the
Regional Centres.
Appendix 1Training Field days and Seminars (2009-2010)
A key intention is to provide field day/cluster group participation by agronomists with Greenkeepers, Green
Superintendents and administrators as a means of improving skill and knowledge. NZSTI will also provide at least one staff
person to attend a total of four days at the North and South Island Bowls Greenkeepers’ Seminars held annually. Number of

CLUB SCENECounties Manukau Rugby had their annual Sponsors Day
at the Pukekohe Cosmopolitan Club on 5 August, playing
Lawn Bowls as their chosen activity.
All Steelers squad members, sponsors and staff
participated in what was to be an exciting, fun and social
afternoon for all involved. Not many participants had
played bowls before, but after some coaching advice by
the Counties Manukau Bowls Youth & Coach Co-ordinator,
Antony Petrie, everyone got the grasp of it and really got
into the game.
As expected, everyone got really competitive but it
gave an opportunity for players, staff and sponsors to
socialise with each other while enjoying taking part in an
afternoon of lawn bowling. Everyone got in there and
had a go with a lot of laughs, mixed with general banter
between the teams meant overall everyone had a very
enjoyable day.

made called CASH
COWS & GREENER
GREENS. Part of this
presentation focused
on the concepts of
national brands for
HAVE-A-GO days (free
open days for the locals)
and CHRISTMAS BOWLS
(holding Christmas Staff/
Team Parties at the local
bowling club which includes a
game of bowls).
We would like to launch these
brands this year and provide your club
with marketing and promotional support.
There is no charge to your club. The only criteria
is you use the logo(s). The aim is to get more people
playing bowls , raise our sports’ profile and generate
more cash flow for your club! If your club is interested
in participating, in this pilot phase, please download the
form from www.bowlsnz.co.nz and send it back to Bowls
NZ.
If we can get this going on a national basis across the
country we have the opportunity to raise the profile of
bowls with maximum impact. Depending on the number
of clubs that participate there is also the possibility to
undertake some national marketing and promotional
activity. We look forward to working with you!

AT
Purpose of HAVE-A-GOTo introduce your
local community to your
bowling club and to
the sport of bowls.
We all know things
have changed. Time is
precious and for that
reason we can’t expect
a quantum leap from a
person trialing bowls to
becoming a member!
Key Aim of the Day:
Give them a great time, get
their contact details and invite
them back to your club to play in
MIB or book a Christmas Party or to
invest in a membership or . . . . . what does
your club offer, what options do you have for people
to play bowls at your club and to generate extra cash flow?
To start off we will provide your club the following:
l One 1200 x 800 Sign
l A promotional email template
l An A5 flyer template
l A logo (which can be downloaded off the Bowls NZ
website: www.bowlsnz.co.nz)
l Handy Hints & Tips for A Successful Day
If you can’t do the 11 October this year, that’s ok.
You can still run a HAVE-A-GO day and we will provide you
with the above – just download the form from
www.bowlsnz.co.nz and let us know.
