AsofMay1st,Paulisnolongerourfull-timeminister.Somepeoplewillfindthisveryunsettling.PleaserememberthatPaulisnotthefirstministerwe’vehad.Wehavehadtosearchforanewministerbefore,andwewillagain.Theprocessiswellunderway.TheJointNeedsAssessmentCommitteehascompletedtheirtask.TheSearchCommitteehasbeenformedandhasbeguntheirwork.PaulhasgraciouslyofferedtobeavailableforsomepastoralcareforusinMayandJune,andtheWorshipCommitteehassecuredSundaypulpitsupplyforusuntiltheendofJune.TheOfficialBoardhaschargedasmallcommitteewithfindinganappointmentministerforustoprovideuswithpastoralcareandworshipleadershipintheinterimuntiltheSearchCommitteehasfoundanewministerforusandthatpersonisinplace.Itisimportanttobeawarethatthisprocesscouldtakesevenmonthsormuchlonger.Thisisnotadecisionthatcanberushed.TheadbelowwillrununtiltheendofJuly,andasuccessfulcandidatewouldstillhavetoprovidehisorhercongregationwiththreemonths’notice.Ourfabulousstaffwillcontinueintheirroles,supportingus,justasweneedtosupportthemduringthistransitiontime.Theytoo,aremissingourfulltimeminister,andwemustnotexpectthemtobethemselvesandaministertoo!Wewillworktogether,ourchurchwillremainopen,andwewillcontinuetobethefaithcommunitythatweare.

Lindsay,Ontario-CambridgeStreetUnitedChurchislookingforafull-timeOrdainedMinister.Weareadynamicchurchserving500memberswithdedicatedelderswhofaithfullyserveourveryactivecongregation.ThispositionissupportedbyaDirectorofMusic,aCongregationalDesignatedMinistryLayPerson,aswellasfull-timeAdministrativeandCustodialstaff.
Ourcongregationrecognizestheimportanceofmusicinworship,including3Choirs,aHandBellEnsembleandaWorshipBand.TheU.C.Wisastrong,integralpartofourchurchandtheSundayschooliswellattended.Ourcongregationhasastronghistoryofoutreachworkbothlocallyandinternationally.Ourimpressivechurchfacilityincludesafullgymnasium,andinvitingmeetingroomswhichareavailabletothecommunityatlarge.
Thesuccessfulcandidatemustbeabletodemonstrateinspirational,relevantpreaching,andbeabletorelatetoallagegroups.OurcongregationislookingforaMinisterwhowillestablishpastoralvisitationasamajorpriority.Inaddition,theMinisterwillbewelcomingtoallandbeactivelyinvolvedinourcommunity.TheMinisterwillsupportourpersonalfaith,thefaithjourneyofothers,encouragingnewpeopleintothelifeandworkofthechurch.

rehearsingforourpopularDessertConcert,Canadian,Eh!TheCherubChoirisbusylearningsongsandspeakingpartsfortheirmusical
presentation,Praise,Hallelu!onMother’sDay.ManyofourbellringerswillbeinHamiltonforthebiannualOntarioHandbellFestivalfromMay25–27.The
CambridgeSt.SingersarestillbusyrehearsingastheywillcontinuetosingtotheendofJune.
Andthenawell-deservedsummerbreak!
WesayfarewelltoPaulandwillmisshimgreatly.Ithasbeenapleasureandaprivilegetowork
withPaul.WedowishhimwellandGod’sblessingsashe“repurposes”himself.Oneofthe
thingsIgreatlyappreciatedwasPaul’sinteractionwithourchildrenandyouth.Often,when
AngeliqueandIarrivedonThursdayforrehearsals,Paulwouldbesittingamongmanyofthe
choirmemberschatting.OrWaltandPaulwouldbedoingsomethingthatwouldgetthekids
superhyperbeforetheycameintothechoirroom(thanks!).AndhavingPaulandEleanorcome
alongonanumberofVOVtourswasalwaysatreat.
Oncethingsslowdownatthechurchduringthesummer,planningwillquicklystartforthe
upcomingyear.PhantomoftheOrganwillreturn,aswellasourChristmasconcertfeaturingLaJeunesseYouthOrchestra.Butinthemeantime,enjoytheflowersandgreengrass.Blessings.

Ifyou’veevervisitedanotherchurchandstayedforthefellowshiptime,howdidyoufeel?Conspicuous,self-conscious,awkward?IcertainlyrememberfeelingallofthosethingsasayoungadultattendingFirstUnitedinOttawa,andbeingtremendouslygratefultothepeoplewhotookthetimetotalktomeandlearnmoreaboutme.WhensomeoneentersourmidstonaSundaymorning,theirimpressionofCambridgeStreetUniteddependslargelyonhow—orwhether—theyarewelcomed.It’swonderfulthatsomanyofourmembersofferawarmandgenuinegreeting.Ofcourse,oneofthebestwaystohelpsomeonegettoknowothersistoinvitethem—orbetteryet,walkwiththem—downtothegymforcoffeehour.Wealsoneedtorecognizethatittakestremendouscourageforastrangertowalkintoasettingwhereeveryoneseemstoknoweveryoneelse.Whenyou’renewtoachurch,it’seasytofeelsimultaneouslyasifthere’sahugespotlightonyou,andlikenobodynoticesyouatall.That’swhytheVisitationCommitteehasintroducedasetofspottedcoffeemugs.Theideaistoinvitenewcomersandvisitorstohavetheircoffeeorteainoneofthesemugs,asasignaltotherestofus.Theinvitationisalsoopentopeoplewho’vebeenattendingforawhile,butwouldliketomeetnewpeopleandhaveaconversation.Ifyoulookforwardtocoffeehour,youmightbesurprisedtolearnthattherearepeoplewho’vebeencomingtoCambridgeStreetforyearsandstillfeellikeoutsiders.Irememberhearingofonepersonwhosaid,“Icometochurchalone.Isitalone.Istandaloneatcoffeehour.”Ihaven’tseenthatpersonatchurchinaverylongtime,andIunderstandwhy.Newcomersmayormaynotbecomfortableusingthespottedmugs,butit’sdishearteningtoseesomeonetaketheplungetodosoandstillbeignored.Soifyouseesomeonewithaspottedmug,please
makeanefforttosaymorethan“Hello.”Andifyoudon’tseeanyonewithaspottedmug,pleaselookaroundforsomeoneyoudon’trecognize,orwhoisstandingbythemselves,orwholooksuncomfortable.Itdoesn’tmatterifthatpersonhasbeingcomingtoourchurchfortwoweeksor65years;everyoneappreciatesbeingnoticedandmakingaconnection.Ofcourseweallenjoycatchingupwithfriends,andthattimeafterchurchcanbeapreciouschancetoconnect,sohowaboutthis:EveryotherSunday,makeanefforttospeaktosomeoneyouwouldn’tnormallytalkto,especiallyifthey’renewtoourcongregation.Weallhaveaparttoplayinextendingwelcomeandhospitality.

TheKawarthaHighlandsPresbyterialAnnualMeetingwashostedingrandstylebyCambridgeStreetUCWandIthankthemanyenthusiasticworkerswhomadeitpossible.Ourspeaker,JoanSmiley,broughtusgreatstoriesaboutourMethodistrootsandtheOldHayBayChurch,whichdeservesoursupport.IwasprivilegedtohavetheopportunitytoattendtheBayofQuinteConferenceUCWAnnualMeetinginRenfrewonApril26.ItwasmostenjoyableandallowedmetomeetUCWmembersfromtheotherPresbyterialsinourConferenceaswecelebrateour55thAnniversary.ThemainspeakerwasJeffLehoux,aretiredcombatmedicwiththeCanadianArmedForces.Mr.LehouxwasbadlywoundedinAfghanistanandisnowdeeplyinvolvedwithhumanitarianmissionstoCameroon,Africa.Thankyoutothemanycontributors,helpersandbuyerswhomadeourRummageSaleonSaturday,May6suchasuccess.Theeventwas,onceagain,ablyconvenedbyMaxineAndersonandPamBurtt.CambridgeStreetUCWmembersattendedtheSpringRallyonMay10thatwashostedbyTrinityUnitedinOmemee.Thespeaker,CarolO'Neil,helpedus"cleartheclutter"frommind,soulandspace.Weenjoyedadayofworship,spiritualenlightenment,goodfoodandfellowship.WearealllookingforwardtotheVictorianTeaonJune10aspartofthe55thAnniversaryoftheUCW.HopefullyalltheCambridgeStreetladieswillbetheretoenjoythefestivities.OnSunday,June11theUCWareresponsibleforthecontentofthemorningservice.WearepleasedthattheNationalUCWPresident,NancySutherland,willbeourspeaker.

wasthankedfortakingaphotoofthegroup.
WhentheJointNeedsAssessmentCommitteeaskedustospecifywhatwewantedinanewminister,theonlyrequestthatIputforthwasthatheorshewouldbewillingtocarryonthisformofadulteducation.
Asmanyofourmembersareagingandexperiencinghealthproblems,Iamalsoappealingtothecongregationtoseriouslyconsiderjoiningthisgroup.Personally,Icanvouchfortwothings–Ihaveenjoyedparticipatingandhavegrowninmyfaith.

DuringatimeofrapidimmigrationJ.R.leftDumfriesshire,ScotlandandlandedinOmemeecirca1853.HepursuedbusinessenterpriseswiththeretiringClerkofVictoriaCountybutthenspentthreeyearsinTorontoworkingfortheMontrealTelegraphCo.In1872,hereturnedtoLindsayinthepositionofassistantCountyClerkandTreasurer,eventuallybeingappointedtothefullposition.ThismanledthemanagementoftheinfantCountyofVictoriaforoverfiftyyears.
VictoriaCountyhaditsbeginningwithprovisionalindependencein1861,sixyearsbeforeCanada’sconfederationandtheCourtHouseandGaolwerefinallybuiltinLindsayin1863.VictoriaCountycoveredavasttractoflandof1100squaremileswithentiretownshipsbeingtradedtomakeaproperfit.ItwastherailwaysystemcentredinLindsaythatallowedtransportationandcommercetojoinupitsfar-reachingextremitiesandbringsomeelementofunity.Itisfaircommenttonotethatunityhasstillnotbeenachievedafter150yearsofCountystructure.
BeingaScotsman,J.R.wasnoteasilydivertedfromacorporateplanandCountyproceduresfollowedhisPresbyterianbeliefs.Mr.McNeilliewasdedicatedtoSt.Andrew’sChurchinLindsayandaprominentelderinthatcongregation.HeorganizedthelayingofthecornerstoneinJanuary1886andreadapassageattheopeninginJuneduringaseverehurricane.Presbyteriansloveadversity.HeledthebuildingofthemansebehindthatChurchin1887.
DuringhislifeinLindsayhecontributedasChairoftheBoardofEducation,becameGovernoroftheRossMemorialHospitalandPresidentoftheCanadianConferenceofCharitiesandcontributortothe20ClubofLindsay.In1912hepreparedandcirculatedawell-documentedhistoryofLindsaythatisavaluedhistoricaldocument,eventoday.
WedarenotunderestimatetheemotionthatPresbyterianswentthroughin1925whentheybecameafoundingpartnerinthenewUnitedChurch.HereinLindsay,amajorityoftheSt.Andrew’scongregationandtheirministermovedtothisbuildingtoformanewcongregation.
Theylefttheirbelovedbuildingtoothers.
JamesRichardsonMcNeilliewasamanoforder,traditionandhehadavisionofthefuture.AfteralonganddedicatedcareeroffiftyyearswithVictoriaCounty,hispassingwasmournedin1928inthissanctuary.
