Honorable Mayor and Members of Norfolk City Council
Re: Remove the 15-foot Confederate Monument Located at the Center of Main
Street in Downtown Norfolk, Virginia
In honor of Cynthia Hurd, 54; Susie Jackson, 87; Ethel Lance, 70; Rev. DePayne
Middleton-Doctor, 49; Hon. Rev. Clementa Pinckney, 41; Tywanza Sanders, 26;
Rev. Daniel Simmons Sr., 74; Rev. Sharonda Singleton, 45; Myra Thompson, 59. We
are asking the City Council consistent with our request now exceeding 30 thirty-years,
to vote on the immediate removal of the 15-foot Confederate Monument unveiled in May
1907, and other symbols of the Confederacy from public places, similar with the removal
of the Confederate flag from the City Council urged by my deceased friend and mentor
former NAACP President, Attorney James F. Gay, as a memorial honoring the victims.
Our hearts are one with those who grieve the loss of these great individuals.
Respectfully,
