Course book materials are all the materials in a course book package that we use in the classroom to present and practice language, to develop learners’ language skills
HOW DO WE SELECT AND USE COURSE BOOK MATERIALS?
A course book package usually includes a student’s book, a teacher’s book and audio and or video recording
① Is the material visually attractive?
② Does the visual material help learners to understand context and meaning?
③ Is the material well organized?
④ Is the culturally appropriate?
⑤ Is it suitable for your learners’ age and their needs and interests?
Problems Strategies Possible solutions
The task or exercise is too short
Extending material Write extra items, following the same pattern
The task or exercise is too long
Shortening material Give different parts of the text or task to different learners
The task doesn’t suit the learners’ learning style
Change the methodology
Change the interaction pattern, e.g. use a matching task as a mingling activity(in this case learners move around the class to find their partners)

The texts or tasks are too easy or too difficult
Changing the level of the material
Make material more/less challenging
The activities in the units in the book always follow the same sequence
Reordering material Change the order of the material e.g. ask learners to cover up a page or a part of a page, so that they focus on what you want them to do first.
There is not enough practice material in a particular unit
Making use of all the resources in the book
Use extra material from the book : grammar summaries, word list, lists of irregular verbs, etc.
