Biology Article Reviews Understanding Informational Text
Things written outside of the classroom help us to make connections to what we learn from a textbook and a teacher in the classroom.
Reading and writing - outside of the classroom- help us to build a better vocabulary and an understanding of Science - helping us to become better readers and writers.
Writers, write differently in all subject areas
Ex. Scientific writing is different than fictional writing; Historians write differently than religious scholars
Writing to entertain and inform is different than writing
to educate, inform and persuade
Informational Text – Each term…
• You will read an article from an assigned source
• You will create a bibliography citation for the source you read
• Write about the source in a specific way
• Make school and personal connections to what you have read
• The topics will be different each term
• The writing will focus on what you are doing in English class
• Your grade will reflect on how well you improve from one assignment to the next
Informational Text = Why do authors write?
• To present facts and new information about a subject (Science / Biology).
• To make connections with authors who present the most important facts and information to what will be learned in class.
• To help us understand main ideas and things that are new and relevant in a particular topic/subject impacting our lives.
Each source we read has:• Author• “Title of Article”• Name of Source• Date of Source• Page Number(s) (web
address)

Informational Text Quote
• To repeat (a passage, phrase, etc.) from a book, magazine, speech, or the like, as by way of authority, illustration, etc.
• To use a brief excerpt from: • To cite, offer, or bring forward as evidence or
support related to a main idea. • To enclose (important words, phrases,
sentences) within quotation marks.
Informational Text Vocabulary
New topic related vocabulary is always presented in a variety of ways within informational text. We cannot ignore new vocabulary and we need to understand what it means and how it is used in writing. Vocabulary is:• Words that make up a language• Unique words that relate to a particular
subject – Science / Biology

Articles from magazines, newspapers, journals and websites provide an opportunity to make classroom and real-world connections. These topics and main ideas allow us• To personalize our learning• To better understand and appreciate how a

and sometimes quarterly• Informing readers of unique
ideas and concepts• Written at a general level
for many to learn from and understand unique content

• Published daily• Informing readers of
important information related to general current events and topics
• Written at a basic reading level for everyone to easily learn and understand

or are web-based• Published monthly, and
quarterly• Informing readers of specific,
more advanced ideas and concepts
• Written at a scholarly level for students and researchers to learn more in-depth ideas and concepts
Websites are• Only web-based• Published continuously• Informing readers of basic,
general, specific and complex ideas and concepts
• Written at a basic, general and advanced level for everyone to learn from and understand basic and complex ideas and concepts
Informational Text Bibliography Citation
A bibliography citation contains information which identifies the origins of the source and is usually located at the top / bottom of a source. Citations include:
• Author of the article• “Title of the article.”• Title of the source• Date the source was published• Page number(s) or URL where article can be found MLA Format:Smith, Jerry. “Biology Article Review.” Science News 25 September 2014: 52-55.
Informational Text Writing Components
Before turning in any assignment, pay attention to:• Grammar, Punctuation & Spelling! • Complete Sentences.• Making connections to what the author wrote
and how it impacts you – Focus on questions you might have; Is there something you need to investigate further……..
