XXXX Bank of America, Global Corporate & I-‐Banking 335 Madison Ave. New York, NY January 29, 2011 Dear Ms. XXXX: I am writing to you regarding the Global Markets Technology Summer Analyst position at Bank of America. I learned of the position while talking to Bank of America representatives at the Duke Career Fair in January and was instantly attracted to the practical training and networking opportunities offered by the internship. My coursework as a computer science B.S. candidate at Duke University has exposed me to an extensive set of programming experiences. I have written a Huffman coding file compression program in C++, an XML-‐based game package in Java, and developed a strong object-‐oriented background along the way. I have completed coursework in low-‐level languages like C or MIPS assembly language, simultaneously learning about computer architecture and operating system design. Currently, as a junior, I am taking an eCommerce class in which I analyze business models and technology infrastructures used in eCommerce companies, bridging the gap between technology and business. In addition to my academic coursework, my work experiences have given me the knowledge and skills necessary to be a summer analyst at Bank of America. For example, last semester I was a research assistant at Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, where I organized and merged finance data on over 1,000 companies entered by other research assistants. In my internship last summer I gained invaluable experience in communication and public relations working as for the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In this position I connected leaders of the local community with key players in the EPA Nail Salon Project and gave a presentation on environmental justice at the Overseas Chinese American National Convention. I believe my technical skills and work experiences qualify me for the Global Markets Technology Summer Analyst position at Bank of America. Enclosed is my resume and if you have any questions or concerns, I am available via email ([email protected]) or phone (000-‐555-‐0000). I look forward to meeting you soon. Thank you for your consideration and your time. Sincerely, Miguel Lorenzo

XXXX Trinity Consultants 000 1st Avenue Long Beach, CA 00000 May 5, 2011 Dear Ms. XXXX: I am writing to express my interest in your entry-‐level environmental compliance consultant position in Long Beach, CA. I discovered the opportunity at careerbuilder.com and would greatly value the opportunity to work and grow in your company. The majority of my undergraduate study and work experience has been geared towards a career in the environmental sector. I believe environmental consulting is an ideal field for me as it requires specific knowledge of pertinent regulations and the ability to integrate scientific investigations and environmental policies into coherent recommendations. I am a graduating senior at Duke University and have already had several science and policy-‐related experiences and have developed skills necessary for a career in environmental consulting. Serving as a research assistant to a climate change lab at Duke, I received a broad introduction to environmental testing, data collection, and trend analysis, with more specific applications to soil testing. My knowledge of environmental testing grew through studying marine invertebrate collection and analysis at the Duke Marine Lab. My policy background supplements and complements my scientific experience. I have studied the major international air, water, species trade, and waste disposal agreements, and the major domestic air (CAA), water, species, and waste disposal laws. In doing so, I have learned how to translate complex laws and terms into easy-‐to-‐understand language, and I have received an introduction to the many academic and government resources available for researching these agreements and laws. In addition, I have studied various systems of tradable permits, including those involved in air quality regulation. In my most recent job, I researched civic and environmental groups in NC that might be interested in working with my employer to promote new air, water, and waste disposal laws in the General Assembly. I am confident the knowledge and skills I have gained through academia and practical application will make me a successful environmental consultant at Trinity Consultants, Inc. I would very much enjoy the opportunity to interview with you. You may best reach me by email, [email protected] or by phone, 000-‐555-‐0000. I have attached a resume to this letter for your review. Thank you for your time and consideration, and I look forward to hearing from you about my candidacy. Sincerely, Tom Davidson Attachment

XXXX Manager, Legal Assistant Recruiting Sullivan & Cromwell LLP 125 Broad Street New York, NY 10004 Dear Ms. XXXX: I would like to express my immense interest in the Legal Assistant position at Sullivan & Cromwell, which I discovered on Duke’s online job database. Working at Sullivan & Cromwell appeals to me because it is a firm that simultaneously focuses on success and integrity. As I read in a recent New York Times article, the firm is as concerned with financial achievement as it is with maintaining its sterling reputation. As chairman H. Rodgin Cohen stated in the article, “Money is money, but reputation is reputation.” To me, this demonstrates an understanding that financial success must be coupled with high standards. This characteristic dovetails with my demand for high personal achievement within the confines of strictly defined values such as sincerity and honesty. I therefore wish to work at Sullivan & Cromwell as a Legal Assistant because I believe its uncompromising culture matches my own values. My experiences at Duke have convinced me to pursue my interest in law. As an undergraduate I have served as vice president of Duke Moot Court, a student-‐run organization that hosts an annual constitutional law tournament for high school students from across the United States. Through this organization, I demonstrated my leadership abilities by raising over $11,000 for the tournament. Additionally, in preparing for my role as a tournament judge I found that I truly enjoy the intellectual challenge of delving into nuanced legal arguments. My resolve to become involved in law was further increased by my employment at Duke Law School, where my interactions with law students demonstrated to me yet again that law presents an unparalleled intellectual exercise. In particular, I am drawn to the writing and research components of legal work, as both of these are skills at which I excel. I wish to begin the hard work law demands as a paralegal at Sullivan & Cromwell. As someone who desires exposure to the legal world, I would value experience as a paralegal because it would afford me the opportunity to encounter law at its most fundamental level. I have attached my resume, which demonstrates my strong academic background. I would be delighted to speak with you about how the Legal Assistant position would work for an enthusiastic, capable, and hard-‐ working college graduate. I look forward to interviewing with Sullivan & Cromwell on campus. Sincerely, Jake Andrews Attachment

Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago 1 S. Franklin Chicago, IL 60606-‐4594 Dear XXX: I am writing to express my interest in the Domestic Affairs Program Director position. I am a senior at Duke University graduating in May with a degree in public policy, a certificate in health policy, and a minor in political science. I believe that my experiences over the past four years, as well as my demonstrated professionalism uniquely qualify me for the large responsibilities held by the Domestic Affairs Program Director. I am especially attracted to the Domestic Affairs Program Director position due to my familiarity with the position and the JCRC. Three years ago, I served as a JCRC intern reporting to xxxxx, who formerly filled that position. Through my everyday work, I was able to gain a very clear understanding for the daily tasks and challenges of the position, as well as a general understanding of the JCRC’s organization as a part of the federation. I also enjoyed researching for and drafting a volume of the Chicago Connection to International Terrorism as my final project. While I believe I achieved highly as an intern, my experiences at Duke University beyond that internship led to significant personal and professional development that qualify me for this position. During my junior year at Duke, the Palestinian Solidarity Movement held its national conference on Duke’s campus. In the wake of this event, an anti-‐Semitic column was written in the campus newspaper. Much of my work during that year was spent planning counter-‐programming to the conference, and coordinating a response to the column. During this process, my peers began to look to me as someone who could build consensus and represent the Jewish community during a difficult time. Not long after, I became the Jewish Awareness Week Chair and President of our Hillel, the Freeman Center for Jewish Life. I have since worked serving as the voice of the Jewish community, including building coalitions with other cultural groups, Duke’s student government, and university administrators. Also, I have led our student board to be an effective programming body, representing the different aspects of Jewish life at Duke. I believe that JCRCs and Hillels are similar in that much of the work revolves around preparing for the next crisis or issue, and then responding effectively when the issue is at hand. I feel that my experiences with Duke’s Hillel have prepared me to effectively lead as the Domestic Affairs Program Director. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to discuss with you my other experiences and how they uniquely qualify me for this position. Attached is my resume for your further review. Thank you for considering my application and I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, John Lincoln Attachment
