Attendance-Every Day Counts
Under 8’s Day
National Simultaneous Storytime
Dear Students, Parents/Caregivers and Friends, What a fabulous day for our Prep to Year 2 students for Under 8’s Day on Tuesday – rugby league, emergency services team, aboriginal art, Japanese origami, Auslan signing, European folk dancing, pyramid construction! A huge huge thank you to Mrs Kathy Finlay for her coordination of this activity. And many thanks then to everyone who supported her – staff, volunteers, parents etc. Top job all round with the bonus being that the students really enjoyed it and learnt some things about other cultures and languages. Having Cupcake Day in support of the Cancer Council’s Biggest Morning Tea also proved to be a wonderful activity for Under 8’s Day. Congratulations Student Council, and a big thank you to the bakers! Listening to our school Band perform their Eisteddfod pieces yesterday in front of an audience of peers, staff and parents was very rewarding. I know you will do Moura proud tomorrow in Biloela. Thank you to Mr Chris Allen for your commitment to our school as
the Instrumental Music teacher. And many thanks to the parents who will provide the transport for the students to get to and from the venue. Next Monday it is the Verse Speaking crew who will be participating in the Biloela Eisteddfod. Best wishes are extended to you too. I have had the pleasure of listening to the practices and have noted the improvement and commitment being made. Many thanks to Mrs Michelle Lang, and Ms Joelene King, for being your ‘coaches’. Students have already been coming and going to the Biloela Eisteddfod for various music and singing sections with many successes being noted. Well done to you all. And speaking of successes I have heard along the grapevine (or read) of successes of some of our students at Beef Week and at local shows (eg Theodore Show in the horse events). Great examples of students striving for great things in arenas not related to school activities. Congratulations! The Year 5 and 6 robotics crew are into full swing with their ‘training’ with Miss Elly Fiedler. The Year 6 students are showing extra commitment to their work by getting to school for an 8:00 am start on Wednesday mornings. Well done, Elly and crew. Plenty of hard work still to do in the lead up to the CQ Robotics Challenge on Friday 10 August. ATTENDANCE – EVERY DAY COUNTS A huge congratulations to Year 5H for achieving the highest attendance rate for Weeks 1-5 of Term 2! Actually, all classes should be congratulated as they

have either improved or maintained their attendance rates.

We have 43 students (18 students for the same period in 2017) who still have 100% attendance with Year 5H having the largest number of 100%ers (ie 7) with Year 3U and 6F close behind with 6 students each with 100% attendance. Way to go Years 3U and 6F! Of course there are many other students who have only had one or two days of absence. They are to be congratulated too. Students with less than 85% attendance (17 students compared to 31 students at the same time last year) will continue to receive closer attention about the reasons for absences and making a plan to ensure greater attendance. <85% attendance at this stage of the year equates to approximately 12 days of absence. SCHOOL UNIFORM With the cooler starts to our days many students are wearing long sleeves. Please be reminded that the jumpers/coats/skivvies need to be black or blue, have no logos/writing on them and definitely have NO hoods. Long pants need to be black or blue too. NO jeans. RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR PLAN FOR STUDENTS Resilience means knowing how to stay calm and being able to stop yourself from getting extremely angry, down, or worried when something “bad” happens. It means being able to calm down and feel better when you get very upset. It also means being able to control your behaviour when you are very
upset so that you bounce back from difficulty and return to work or play. Examples of Resilience: • When someone treats you unfairly, inconsiderately, or disrespectfully, you can stop yourself from getting too angry and lashing out • When you make mistakes, do not understand something, get a bad school report, or are teased or ignored, you can stop yourself from getting very down and withdrawing • When you have an important test or activity to perform, you can stop yourself from getting extremely worried • When you want to meet someone new, you can stop yourself from getting extremely worried • When someone is putting pressure on you to do the wrong thing, you can stop yourself from getting extremely worried about what that person will think if you stand up and say “no” Resilience Skills to Strengthen Resilience: • Finding something fun to do • Finding someone to talk to • Relaxation • Exercise • Being assertive • Changing negative to positive self-talk • Not blowing things out of proportion • Figuring out how to solve the problem Rational Ways to Think to Increase Resilience: • “It’s Not as Bad as You Think It Is” thinking – for example, “It’s not the worst thing that could happen to me.” • “I Can Stand It” thinking – for example, “I don’t like it, but I can stand it.” • “Accepting Myself” thinking – for example, “When I make mistakes or people don’t want to be around me, I know that I am not a loser. I am still me, capable and likeable.” • “Taking Risks” thinking – for example, “It’s OK to make mistakes when learning new things.” • “Being Independent” thinking – for example, “I don’t care that much what people think of me. It’s important to do what I want and to be me.” • “I Can Do It” thinking – for example, “I’m more likely to be successful than to fail.” • “Being Tolerant of Others” thinking – for example, “When people do the wrong thing or when they are different from me in custom or appearance, I do not condemn them as being bad or inferior.”

National Simultaneous
Storytime!
Every year on the same day primary school
students around Australia participate in
National Simultaneous Storytime by
reading the same book. Now in its 18th
successful year, it is a colourful, vibrant,
fun event that aims to promote the value of
reading and literacy, using an Australian
children’s book that explores age-
appropriate themes, and addresses key
learning areas of the National Curriculum
for Foundation to Year 6.
This year’s book was Hickory Dickory
Dash by Tony Wilson and illustrated by
Laura Wood. Moura students across the school
participated by reading the story together
and completing related activities. They
thoroughly enjoyed the repetitive rhyming,
the story tension and characters.
More information about the NSS or to
watch the book being read by actor, singer
and Playschool legend, Jay Laga’aia log

We love our reading at MSS!
