Oracle BI Publisher Overview

Previously called as Oracle XML Publisher (XMLP), Rebranded as BI Publisher when XML Publisher became part of OBIEE Suite

Oracle's primary reporting tool for authoring, Managing & delivering documents.

Install and Integrate BI Publisher

In summary, it is a two step process

1. Software Only Install of BI enterprise edition 11g

2. Integrate BI Publisher with EM 12c

Note :

• EM12c Cloud Control 12.1.0.1.0 requires BI Publisher 11.1.1.5.0

• EM12c Cloud Control 12.1.0.2.0 requires BI Publisher 11.1.1.6.0


Install and Integrate BI Publisher – Software Only Install

• Extract binaries on the Oracle Management Server

• ./runInstaller



• Click on Software Only Install



• Enter the same Oracle Middleware Home path that was created during the

EM installation.



• Complete the software only install


Install and Integrate BI Publisher – configureBIP

• Take backup of EM repository using RMAN or datapump …

• Backup the EM domain, just in-case restoration is required

$cd /u01/app/Middleware/gc_inst/user_projects/domains

$zip -r GCDomain.tar GCDomain

• Execute the configureBIP script residing in ORACLE_HOME/bin of the Oracle

Management server

$./configureBIP

Configuring BI Publisher Version "11.1.1.6.0" to work with

It is strongly recommended to backup the domain before

• Login to EM12c Cloud Control -> Enterprise -> Reports -> BI Publisher Enterprise

Create BI Publisher report using

EM12c repository


BI Publisher Reports

• Intent is to create a report which would look alike below


Creating BI Publisher Reports Invoke BI Publisher from EM12c

• Log in to Enterprise Manager Cloud Control

• Select Enterprise

• Click on Reports

• Click on BI Publisher Enterprise Reports

• Click on BI Publisher Enterprise Reports Web Application.

• Enter the user ID and password.


Creating BI Publisher Reports Create Folder to store Reports and grant roles

• Click on Catalog -> Folder

• Create a new folder named Test Reports

under Shared Folder

• Click on Permissions and grant the required permissions to the various roles.


Creating BI Publisher Reports BI Publisher Reports typically comprises of

• Underlying data model

• parameter

• list of values

• dataset

• Layout to display the data

Report Creation Steps

• Catalog Menu -> New Icon -> Data Model


Creating BI Publisher Reports Data Model -> Properties

• Enter the Data Model details for the test report.

• Select EMREPOS as the Default Data Source.


Creating BI Publisher Reports

Data Model -> List of Values

• Click on the List of Values tab in the Data Model section.

• Select a Type of SQL Query

• Enter datasource as EMREPOS


Creating BI Publisher Reports Data Model -> List of Values -> Query Builder

• Enter the SQL query, which can be entered by either

• Clicking on the Query Builder button or

• By pasting the exact query into the SQL Query section.

• Click on Query Builder button, select the required view from the

left-hand pane and move it to the right-hand pane.

• In this example, the MGMT$DB_DBINSTANCEINFO view is selected and moved to the

right-hand pane.

• Select required fields, TARGET_NAME, TARGET_GUID, INSTANCE_NAME



Data Model -> Data Set

• Click Data Sets

• Click Diagram

• Click SQL Query

• Enter the Data set Name,

• Select a Data Source

• Click on the Query Builder button

• Select relevant fields or

• Enter query in the SQL Query




• Select relevant fields

• Join the two objects using TARGET_GUID

• Click on Results to see the data and also it proves the query works

• Click on Save.

• Click on XML to generate some test data that can be used during the report layout design.




• Subsequently clicking on Data Set, screen will display as follows.

• Click Save



Create Report Layout

• Click on Create New Report.

• Click on Use Existing Data Model



• Select an option in the Create Layout section.

• In this example, the Chart and Table template is chosen.



Enter the layout information.

• Enter the title of the report as Database Instance Extents Information.

• Drag-and-drop INSTANCE_NAME and DBVERSION fields into the layout.

• Drag-and-drop INITIAL_EXT_SIZE and NEXT_EXTENT fields into the Drop Value Here section.

• Drag-and-drop the TABLESPACE_NAME field into the Drop Label Here section.



• Enter the table title as Base Data,

• Drag-and-drop the TABLESPACE_NAME, INITIAL_EXT_SIZE, NEXT_EXTENT fields into the

Base Data section to get the raw or base data.

• Click on Save.



• Click on View report, select the database instance,

• Click on Apply to view the report, as shown in the following screenshot:
