SERVICES: ANC LEADER CLAIMS BATTLE IS NOW PERSONAL
City ‘abandons’ UitsigGARY VAN DYK
@gvdcapejazz
Uitsig is at the centre of a personal polit-ical battle that has resulted in neglectof the area, claims the ANC in the
Western Cape.ANC leader of the opposition in the City
Council, TonyEhrenreich, believes the com-munity was being victimised by the DA-ledcouncil because he lives in the area.Ehrenreich hosted a press conference at
the severely vandalised Uitsig Sports Fieldthat was once a facility that boasted a proudtradition of producingneighbourhood sport-ing heroes.“This sports facility is only the tip of the
iceberg of the problems that we are havinghere,” he said, gazing at the now tattered fa-cility.“I have been complaining about this facili-
ty for months now but was told by BelindaWalker (mayco member for community ser-vices and special projects in the City) to buttout of Uitsig when I raised issues about thefield.“Since then, the sports field has gone to
complete ruin, with the City doing nothingto stop it.”Ehrenreich said the problems at the facili-
ty started when the caretaker left and wasnot replaced.“That is when the vandalism started be-
cause they never replaced him and I know
there were a lot of people from this commu-nity who wanted to take up this role.“Now there is nobody maintaining it and
it is going to cost more to do all the repairs.I tried discussing that it be made availableto our schools in the area who desperatelyneed sports facilities but my pleas have fall-en on deaf ears.“Why? Because I was the one asking for
it?”Housing and health was another problem
Ehrenreich said he tried to address.“I pointed out that ventilation, or the lack
thereof, in Uitsig houses was responsible forhigh levels of TB,” he said.“Asituation that is backedupbyanumber
of research and studies in the area and they
still refused to listen to me and improve theventilation with the upgrades they startedin the area.“They also refused to give the residents so-
lar water cylinders when other RDP houseswere getting them.”Schools in the area was another problem
Ehrenreich complained about, pointing outthat Uitsig High pupils are denied an oppor-tunity to get a better school because he hadwritten to the Premier on their behalf andhad included the National Minister.“Tygersig Primary got a new building re-
cently and I begged to have the high schoolmoved to the old buildings which were in amuch better condition than the high school.

“It would have been a logical solution to im-prove conditions for the high schoollearners but no, ‘Tony asked for it so wewon’t do it’. As we speak that old buildingis being demolished.“We need a bigger school because the old
one is too small but they are telling parentsto send them to schools in other areas.”Apart from the problem of school build-
ings, staffing at the schools also came underthe spotlight.“Education of our youth is a high priority
for me so I maintain close contact withthem,”he said.“There are teachers retiring very soon
and no plans seem to be in place to replacethem. At Tygersig Primary their principalis leaving but a new one has not been ap-
pointed yet.”Ehrenreich feels that if there is a vendetta
against him, forwhatever reason, the peopleof Uitsig must not be made to suffer.“The history of Uitsig is the history of
chronic neglect of the people by the City andprovincial government officials; but nowthey are treating the community evenworsebecause Ehrenreich resides in the area.“They are malicious in their conduct to
hold onto working people’s votes, but denythem basic amenities. This singling out ofthe Community because Ehrenreich lives inthe area andhas spokenup for the communi-ty is unacceptable and is going to lead to acomplaint to the Public Protector.”At the time of going to press the City had
not replied to Ehrenreich’s allegations.

Some of Cape Town’s top comedy tal-ents will be gathering at the PumpHouse in the Waterfront for a very
good cause on Monday 25 May.Mel “I make you look Good” Jones, Khan-
yiso “What the EFF” Kenka and headlineact Carl “You gonna eat that?” Weber willbe in action at the Comedy Club there tohelp a special young girl from Uitsig withher hearing.Launelle Douman, 12, who attends school
in ParowEastwas diagnosedwith profoundhearing loss at the end of October 2012.“I was fitted with a left hearing aid as it
was too expensive for my family to buy twohearing aids at the same time,” Launellesays.“My hearing was re-tested a year later
andmy ability to hear low pitches inmy leftear had gotten a lotworse. Becausemyhear-ing is deteriorating, I need to continuewear-ing my left hearing aid but I now need toget a cochlear implant in the right ear.”This hearing loss did not deter her from
still striving to achieve her potential put-ting in hours of extra tutoring to succeed.“I am blessed to have progressed to Grade
6 without failing or being kept behind. Iwould love to keepupwithmy 60%pass ratewhich can definitely improve if I have the
implant.“The cochlear implant will give me the
best chance of a normal education but themedical tests, the cochlear implant and theoperation are very expensive and that iswhy I am so thankful of these comedianswho have come together to help us raise themoney,” she said. She added that despite her hearing loss
she still tries her best to live a normal life.“I find it difficult to hear my teachers and
tutors at school, and my family at homeeven with the left hearing aid.
“But, I managed to qualify for the choirand I still do spiritual dancingat churchandplay the piano in music class.“Although I am not sure how I have done
this, I have taught myself to lip read whenpeople speak to me. I love to dance becausethis helps me to express myself in otherways.”While Lounelle wants the cochlear im-
plant to enhance her life she also wants itto be a bigger part in the life of her youngerbrother.“I get on very well with my six-year-old
brother. It is why one of my biggest fearsis that I won’t be able to be the sister he candepend on because of my hearing impair-ment.“My brother has asthma so I know that
he also has to fight similar battles to mine, like being scared that people will think weare different to everyone else.“I have accepted that I may be treated dif-
ferently in the world but I know that Godwill always love and accept me.”A cochlear implant is expensive and the
family aims to raise the R360 000 for thecochlear implant and the comedy event isone of the many events that they are plan-ning. Tickets for the event which starts at20:30 are R120 and they are still looking forsponsors of some prizes on the evening.V For more information and booking call Leonie Douman on 082 567 9648.

Readers can buy up to 12 months worthof prepaid electricity in advance to takethe sting out of the proposed hike in costs.
The annual electricity increase for mu-nicipalities, including the City of CapeTown, comes into effect on Wednesday 1July.
Much like filling up before a major fuelprice increase, a good way to counter thehike is to simply stock up, according to
Prepaid24, which suggested this in anewsletter to their clients.
“Unlike your fuel tank, there is no limitto the amount by which your electricitymeter can be stocked up at the old price,”said Ben Lindeque of Prepaid24.
He suggests that consumers be aware oftheir respective municipalities’ tariffstructuring.
The annual increase for municipalityusers is set to be between 8% and 14,25%and will take effect at midnight on 30 June2015.
The recent tariff increase in April onlyaffected users who were supplied directlyby Eskom.
The July increase will however apply toall those users who are supplied with elec-tricity through their municipalities.
An added winter tariff might also be ap-plicable.
“We always recommend that consu-mers contact their municipality directlyto confirm the period during which themunicipalities’ respective winter tariffswill apply,” Lindeque added.

My groot droom sal bewaarheidword as
FourCorners, speel af in dieKaapseVlak-
te waar ’n begaafde jong skaakspeler ge-vaar staan om in die berugte nommerben-des opgeneem te word.Dié film is in 2013 gekies as Suid-Afrika
