Once upon a time, far off on an island lived two sparrows. They
loved each other and lived with the birds on the island.
One day the female sparrow laid two eggs on the beach. Seeing this, the male
sparrow was very happy and congratulated his beloved. The whole birds’ kingdom
gathered and blessed the couple. The old vulture also joined in and expressed his
regards to the couple.
The old vulture, who was a visionary, then professed that the couple will be
remembered in times to come because of the eggs. The couple took his words
seriously and started taking good care of the eggs.
But one fine morning, destiny had planned otherwise. The male sparrow had gone to
pick some food. On his return he found his sweetheart crying her heart out. Looking
into her eyes he asked as to what has happened. The female sparrow pointed
towards the Ocean and said that the Ocean has gulped the two eggs.
The male sparrow could not believe this and rushed to the spot where the eggs were
kept. The eggs were gone. The Ocean had taken them away for no reason. The male
sparrow went mad and promised his sweetheart that he would get back her eggs, no
matter what may come by.
Without sparing a thought, the male sparrow asked the Ocean to return
the eggs. He assured his wife that he is going to empty the Ocean and
bring back the eggs to her.
The Ocean did not respond and so the male sparrow started at his task. He picked
up a sea shell with his tiny beak and filled it up with the Ocean water. He started
making trips of filling up the shell and then empting it on the other side. The female
sparrow went crazy at this sight. She thought that her husband has gone mad. She
started weeping.
Time passed and the male sparrow continued towards his goal…filling up
the shell and empting it on the other side. Soon the birds flying at the top
saw this mad hunt and they came down to enquire the female sparrow.
Some birds approached the old vulture and told him that the male sparrow had gone mad after
the loss of the eggs. The vulture came to the beach and with concern, he recited a prayer to
summon the Ocean lord. The Ocean lord appeared and the vulture asked him to give the eggs
back to the couple. But he refused, saying that it is the will of the Supreme lord and he has
nothing to do with it. He advised the vulture to go to the Supreme lord and ask for help.
Hearing this, the vulture calmed. He asked the female
sparrow not to worry. The male sparrow – not paying
attention to whatever was happening on the ground below,
was still on his quest to empty the Ocean.
“Only Lord Garuda can take our request to the Supreme lord. He has strong
wings and can make the expedition to the lord in short time. We should fly to
him now, otherwise this sparrow will die of emptying the Ocean.” The old
vulture told his friends.
The old vulture flew with his friends to Garuda. Reaching
there, he explained the madness of the sparrow and the
wrong doing of the Ocean. Lord Garuda was convinced and
agreed to take the matter to the Supreme lord.
Having explained the situation to Garuda, the vultures flew back to the
beach. Garuda did his task in the mean while. He took up the matter with the
Supreme lord and asked him to release the eggs. The Supreme lord agreed
and ordered the Ocean to return the eggs to the sparrows.
The water of the Ocean receded and the Ocean lord gave back the eggs to
the sparrows.
The story of the Sparrows ends here but what it leaves behind is a powerful message -
a message that can change your lives forever…a teaching that has made good people
great.
Seeing the eggs, the female sparrow was happy and apologised to her husband of
having doubting his capability. The male sparrow was relaxed seeing his mission
accomplished. The whole bird’s kingdom was proud of the male sparrow.
The message – “Start now, in time it will
happen.”
The task may seem as big as the Ocean and you
may be as tiny as the sparrow, but this should not
deter you from taking that small step and starting
it at once. It is when you take the small steps that
bigger and powerful things begin to work for you.
This is how great people have achieved
unimaginable success. All you need is to just
start with whatever is at hand.
