Course 1: Gender & Leadership in Post-Conflict Environments

Introduction to post-conflict environments and challenges that reconstruction governments face in rebuilding

Focus on gender and leadership with Liberia’s current female-led government as a pertinent example

Guest lecturers from government, civil society and business. Plus field trips to key areas of rebuilding efforts

Gender & LeadershipField Research

Students will carry out a gender analysis on an aspect of post-conflict reconstruction to demonstrate how gender roles impact development

Using results from the analysis, students will draft a policy document making recommendations for mainstreaming gender in the rebuilding process

Course 2: Sustainable Tourism and Development

• Economic growth, job creation, foreign currency earner + sustainable human development?

• Introduction to applied field and operations research & management in the African context

• Focus on Sustainable Development from an eco- and edu-tourism perspective

Course 2: Sustainable Tourism and Development

• Examine Liberia’s political, economic, and social challenges

• Define sustainable tourism: how can it be a tool of development?

• Fieldtrips to UN, government agencies, international and local NGOs, and businesses working toward sustainable development

• Visits to eco-tourism sites such

as Kpatawee Waterfalls, Roberstport and Sapo National Park

Identify a development problem relevant to sustainable tourism in Liberia

Carry out a case study and needs assessment

Collect and analyze data

Teaching: Courses will be held at

the University of Liberia, Capitol Hill and Fendell Campuses

Generally, lectures and guest speakers in the morning and fieldtrips in the afternoon or all day
