Principals Corner Dear KES Family and Friends, Wow! What a great turn out of families to our Thanksgiving Luncheon on Thursday. It was so nice to all the siblings, dads, moms and grandparents enjoy the lunch prepared by our cafeteria staff. I appreciate the entire KES staff in preparing for this annual event. As we
get ready for the Thanksgiving Break, I want to express my gratitude to our parents, students and staff. We have experienced many
unforeseen changes and yet we all continue to do what is best for our children. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break with your family and friends, Mrs. Kathy Tucker

Annual Thanksgiv-
ing Luncheon Thank you for attending our Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon on Thursday. This is a day that our faculty, staff and students look forward to every year. We appreciate being able to serve you. Many thanks to our Cafe-teria & Maintenance staff for their hard work each year. They always do a great job!
We are Thankful!
There is no school on Wednesday, November 22—24, 2011 to celebrate Thanksgiving. We are very thankful for our families and our faculty here at Ketterlinus! School will release at regular time on Tuesday, 11/22/11 at 2:50 p.m. Have a safe and wonderful holiday weekend!
TEACHING GRATITUDE and THANKSGIVING Gratitude is when memory is stored in the heart and not in the mind. --Sam N. Hampton
Thank you to all of our families who contributed to our Thanksgiving Food Drive. We have collected over 500 cans and boxes of food to be shared with St.
Johns County families with school aged children. You have helped your family experience how good it feels to know that they have helped others and that without their help someone
would not have food for their family. As promised, here are a few additional ideas for helping your family learn and practice an ―attitude of gratitude‖: **Thanksgiving Tree
Draw a leafless tree on a piece of paper (maybe open up a grocery bag). Cut out leaves from colored paper and have each family member write or draw something for which they are
thankful. Tape or glue them to the tree. **Thanksgiving Basket
Decorate a box or basket to hold notes written by family members to each other expressing things they appreciate about each other. Review them occasionally or read one before each meal. One family began their note writing on Thanksgiving and continued to add notes to the box through December. On Christmas Day before opening gifts, they open the notes to
each other before they share their gifts. **”What I’m Thankful For” Charades or Pictionary
Have a whiteboard or large pads of paper with markers available. The idea is for everyone to tell what he or she is thankful for by using the rules of charades or Pictionary. Everyone
gets a turn as the other takes a guess. **Silver Lining Awards
Offer Silver Lining Awards to any child who can turn a bad situation into a blessing. (Deborah Spaide: Teaching Children an Attitude of Gratitude) Show your child how to find some-thing good even in the midst of extremely challenging circumstances. **Teach Gratitude / Live the Lesson
Never underestimate the power of your example. You are your child’s most important teacher. Be on the lookout for things to be grateful for and let your children hear you express
your gratitude. ―A simple sincere expression of gratitude when your children do something they were asked to do is always appropriate. Taking an extra moment to thank a sales clerk
at the store or tip the waitress lets them know that gratitude is acceptable and encouraged.‖ (Wayne Parker: Teaching Children to be Grateful) Other families have shared that a portion of their allowances are saved during the year and then given to an organization in need of financial assistance. Another family assists with the
serving of a holiday meal in a homeless shelter. ―After seeing hungry faces accepting a plate of food, my daughters heartily appreciated going home to their safe, cozy home. But they also learned about thankfulness when they saw and heard expressions of gratitude from those receiving the meal‖. So as you prepare for your Thanksgiving celebrations this year, consider all of the small but powerful ways you can teach and encourage a habit of gratitude. Resources:

Blood Drive at Ketterlinus! We will be hosting a Blood Drive at the Ketterlinus Gym on Monday, December 7th from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. This is a critical time of the year and we need your help!
Lunch will be provided to all donors from 11 a.m.—1:00 p.m. by the St. Augustine & St. Johns County Fire Fighters. The class with the most parent partici-pants will win a PIZZA party! Please sign up to do-nate on the KES website under “Blood Drive”. This blood drive is being held in memory of Margie David-son and Patty Keene, both ladies were dedicated em-ployee’s with the St. Johns County School District.
Notes from Nurse Jean!
This is the season for being thankful.
I would like to take a minute to re-
mind everyone that good health is a
gift. Take some time to talk about
healthy living and healthy choices.
Take some time to read labels on your food choices. As
you spend time together, read an inspirational book
like "Winter's Tail" which was made into a movie about
a dolphin who adapted to a prosthetic tail. And in the
words of Temple Gardner "Different is not less." If you
are not familiar with the story of Temple Gardner, she
was diagnosed with autism and overcame many obsta-
cles in life. Take a few minutes to reflect on how great
it is to have healthy limbs, a healthy heart, good diges-
tion, and a good brain.
Please be generous!
Once again, the 5th Grade will make our
annual trek to St. Francis House. Every
year we collect travel size containers of
personal hygiene items to make into kits
to give to the shelter. You know, all those things you
have saved from hotels, send them in! Please send
any unopened: shampoo, conditioner, mouthwash, lo-
tion, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste,
combs/brushes, razors, shaving cream, band aids, anti-
bacterial spray or gel. We are also asking for canned
goods and monetary donations. There are many people
out of work and in need this holiday season. Please be
generous. Bring your contributions to Mrs. Hutson's
class. THANKS for you continuing generosity!
The Giving Tree Each year at Ketterlinus, we put up a
―Giving Tree‖. This tree holds very spe-
cial ornaments. On the back of each or-
nament is information for a child—the size clothes
they wear, and what they may be on their ―wish
list‖ for this holiday season. If your family (or
your place of employment ) are able to choose an
ornament from our tree and would like to purchase
items for a child in need, please do so. The tree is
located in our front office. Any items that you buy
will be given to a child right here at Ketterlinus, to
help make their holiday season a little more spe-
cial. If you have any questions, please contact
Mrs. Mary Warren at 547-8545. Thank you!
Do you need an Interpreter? Parents, if you require the use of an in-
terpreter for any school related func-
tions (meetings, conferences, school pro-
ductions, etc…) we ask that you please
notify us two weeks ahead of time. Please send a
written note in to your child’s teacher or to the front
office. This will give us enough time to be sure we
have an interpreter scheduled.
Accelerated Reader Students are welcome to take AR quizzes in the li-
brary/ media center between 8:00 and 8:20 each
morning and after school in addition to the regular
school day. Accelerated Reader relies on independ-
ent reading practice as a way of managing student
reading performance. Therefore, it is important for
students to read and quiz without parental assistance.
If help is needed, it will be provided by school staff.
