Principal’s
Message
Last week was the Rotary Young Driver
Awareness training day in Dubbo. This was an
excellent opportunity for our current and emerging
drivers to learn about the dangers and
responsibilities of having a drivers licence. I feel
sorry for the bus drivers that returned these young
people to school in the afternoon as the knowledge
and free advice would have been flowing. Usually
with some it is flowing, but I would not describe it
as knowledge and I certainly would not take it as
advice. However, hopefully their on-road behaviour
will benefit from the experience, especially in that
split second decision making process that the
correct choice could save their lives and the lives
of others.
This week our school Counsellor is available
Wednesday, CHS swimming on Thursday, PSSA
swimming at Dubbo and 9/10 Agriculture
excursion to Manildra, Friday. This week is an
example of the variety of experiences that are
available at this outstanding public school.
On Thursday last week our school hosted Sam
Farraway, Member of Legislative Council for NSW, Peter Kelly, Chair of Trundle Progress Association
and Ken Keith OAM Mayor of Parkes Shire; an
impressive starting front row indeed! These
important people announced 160 thousand dollars
for the construction of a skate park in Trundle. I
am very excited as we always need to continually
look for new opportunities for our young people.
A 25 metre pool that is not open all week, just
does not cut it in 2020.
The huge advantage with a skate park is, once it is
established the maintenance costs are minimal.
Also, a young person can enjoy the experience
without having to pay the registration and
insurance costs associated with organised sport.
Despite government subsidies, the cost of
organised sport excludes many children. Also,
some parents either cannot, or will not, transport
children to the various venues for competition,
limiting opportunity for some children. Again
opportunity for children is determined by
geography, a disgrace in this wealthy country.
This school has been instrumental in the 5 year
process of obtaining this grant, for this important
addition to community infrastructure. The process
started with:
• A group of primary students designing a skate
park as part of Primary Enrichment classes
five years ago.
• A letter from the school to Parkes Shire
asking for a skate park to be considered for
Trundle. • A delegation sponsored by Parkes Shire
visiting the school to determine student
interest and discuss possible designs and
locations.
• A visit from a professional skateboarder to
show the children what is possible in the
sport.
• The school approached Rick Colless, former
member of Legislative Council for NSW to
consider funding the project and others at
the school. Rick is an outstanding individual
and supporter of country NSW. He was
responsible for a grant for part of the
construction costs of our netball court. I
suspect Mr Colless was also lobbying for the
skate park on our behalf.
• The school approached the Trundle Progress
Association to consider the possibility of a
skate park in Trundle. Mr Andrew
Rawsthorne, as per usual, was extremely
supportive of the concept.
• The school met with Michael McCormack
(Federal member) and Phil Donato (State
member) informally, about the possibility of a
skate park in Trundle, as well as other
infrastructure projects for youth.
Trundle Progress Association, under the leadership
of Mr Peter Kelly, should be congratulated on its
proactive, positive, attitude to community development and renewal. This town has
community spirit and determination that may allow
it to survive as others around us slowly die. This
possible longevity is generated by people that put
their hand up, such as the Trundle Progress
Association. I thank them for their work on this
project.

Page 3 Term 1 Week 7
This skate park is just like the relatively new
teacher housing, new buses, painting of the school,
grounds improvement, air-conditioning and much
more. It is an indication that even in difficult
agricultural times, the town can still move forward.
There are now additional houses for sale and
rentals in our town. Hopefully, new families will
move to town and revitalise the social and
economic wealth of this town. The Middle Trundle
Road makes travelling to Parkes easier, but it does
run both ways. This town could be a perfect
lifestyle destination for a family wanting to enter
the real estate market. Plenty of big houses to
accommodate the seven children with a passion for
public education for sale.
During the process of obtaining the skate park, I
received letters condemning the idea of a skate
park because it will create a centre for community
vandalism and drug selling. These letters were
signed anonymous. Before I came to Trundle I
thought anonymous was a bartender at a Greek
island resort. I seem to get a few letters from
Anonymous so he / she appears they live locally. In
the six years, I have been Principal of this school I
have had a child scribble in pencil on a toilet cubicle
and it is obvious the drug trade is operated by
adults, supporting their own habit or profiting from
the misery of others. The notion that the
construction of a skate park is going to bring a
malevolent gang of drug selling graffiti artists to
town is in my opinion (and I have a few) ridiculous.
Mr Farraway whilst visiting offered to listen to any
of my concerns in regards to education in Trundle
(he may regret that) and offered to invite the
Education Minister to Trundle to view this
impressive public school. Mr Farraway was glowing
in his praise of the appearance of the school and
the manners, appearance and behaviour of our
students. Over 50 years (many over unfortunately)
has given me a reasonable ability to spot empty
vessels, you know the kind that make the most
noise. Mr Farraway does not seem to be one of
those people. He seems to have a genuine interest in country Australia. Two issues (amongst the
many), I believe Mr Farraway needs to be aware of
are:
• The massive disadvantage country students
have in terms of the costs of progressing to
university, tafe or the workforce.
• The almost total lack of point of need mental
health services for country students.
Recently in the media, the national sport of teacher
bashing appeared, despite public schools once again
topping the Higher School Certificate. This school
has two graduate teachers. Both are displaying the
skills, talent and attitude to be outstanding
educators. I have not asked them what their ATAR
to enter university was. I am sure it was
satisfactory because they have the content
knowledge and skills. As a Principal, I am more
worried about their ability to motivate students to
be lifelong learners. The notion in the media that
HSC entry score is the sole determining factor for
teacher success is simplistic, as the human factors are also vitality important. Our school will continue
to provide opportunities for these young
professionals to further develop their skills this
year. The problem is that the numerous successes
of teachers are not recognised because that is
expected, but the failures of the very few ineffective
teachers sells media time. The Department has
processes for teacher improvement and removal if
necessary. As a Principal, I believe it is a privilege to
teach so I do not hesitate to place teachers on
improvement programs when necessary. This will
not be an issue this year, as we have an outstanding
group of professionals, clearly the best since I have
been in Trundle.
When I went to school, if I presented with a poor
report card, my parents would question and
discipline me. Today, often when a child presents
with a poor report card, the school / system is
questioned. This is healthy in some respects
because we must always reflect on our
performance, but I wonder if it is becoming easier
to question / blame the institution rather than
individuals or families. We have moved
responsibility away from the home / family onto
schools, police, hospitals etc. I have even had
parents numerous times in my career state they
cannot control their children at home, so the
school better.
Our program of school improvement continues.
The fencing around the school was a disgrace five
years ago. I believe it reflected an attitude that if it
is there, it is good enough. Yes it was a fence, and it
did mark the border of the school and kept a few
dogs out (very stupid ones). However, it was not
the best we can have, and deserve, so in my
opinion it is not good enough. Another project for
Telephone: (02) 68921303 Fax: (02) 68921184 Email: [email protected] School webpage – https://trundle-c.schools.nsw.gov.au Facebook - www.facebook.com/TrundleCentralSchool
Page 4 Term 1 Week 7
the future, is the front fence. Again, it is functional
but it is again not good enough as it detracts from
the visual appeal of the school. The presentation of
the school and classrooms should reflect our
attitude and beliefs. A clean, visually appealing
school, tells the public that this school has spirit,
pride and is innovative. Mr Grady, Mr Mudge and
the students should take great pride in the
comments from our visitors.
In some more outstanding news, our school has
been included in the next round of solar
installations for schools. The tenders close in the
next few weeks and installation will begin after this
date. This is exciting because of the practical nature of solar electricity production. Trundle has
clear, bright, long days, perfect for generating
pollution free electricity, so it seems a logical
addition to the school.
The construction of the TAS outdoor workshop
will also begin this week. This will increase the
capacity and safety of the workshop area and
allow for more student extension projects. In
addition, the school will be constructing an
additional bus shed to house our new 25 seat bus.
Both these projects will be completed by local
people, effectively keeping government money in
the local communities. All these buildings will be
connected to rain water tanks, preserving
precious water.
Our computer system is essential for the
functioning of classrooms and administration. This
is why if any student tampers with the system
exposing it to possible viruses, it is taken
extremely seriously. Our system allows us to track
who was logged onto the system, the time and
what they have been viewing etc. In short, it is very
easy to catch who is responsible. Depending on the
nature of the breach, it will be dealt with under the
Schools Discipline Code or reported to the Police.
The panic buying of toilet paper is an indication of
the power of the media to incite panic, and unfortunately the gullible nature of some people.
The Corona virus is not a gastro virus. Therefore,
unless you are using the toilet paper to construct a
mask or seal off your isolation room, your normal
supply of 3ply (2ply if you have a government
backside) will do the job. One condition that is
currently in the town is conjunctivitis. This is a
highly infectious condition and students with the
infection are not to attend school when infected.
Note, I stated in the town as to my knowledge one
of the many Trundle stray cats, a few black snakes
and an echidna live at the school, so any conditions
are transported from home.
Hopefully reading this Principal’s message has not
made you require more toilet paper.

Ajax’s
Weekly Woof
I have been on rain leave. The boss does not like
me in the school when the grounds are wet
because I track mud into the classrooms. Mate,
look at the logic. I have four paws that together
would not be half the size of one of Dylan’s,
Anthony’s or Jaxson’s shoes. Come on Southo, let
the dog back, I am off the cheap dog food and
smelling like Potpourri. You let the giant’s run free.
Woof Woof Awards:
500 happy barks to primary classes. You’re
working well and seem happy. It is alright guys, I
looked in the history books. It was rain, no need to
panic. Apparently in the old days, it rained for
more than 10 minutes at a time.
500 happy barks to our big buddies for their care
of the Kinders. I constantly (when the boss lets me
and forgets his precious carpet) see the care and
compassion you are showing towards the younger
children.
500 happy barks to Harry Wu. Mrs Southon is
constantly telling funny ‘Harry Wu moments’.
Always keep the real boss of Trundle Heights
Doggy Resort happy. Well done, Harry.
600 happy barks to the new students, Jennifer and
Nancy Lornie, for the excellent way you have
settled into the school and your beautiful gentle
natures and positive attitude. If you want to know
anything, ask the dog because I know and see
everything.
601 happy barks to Jo Randall who constructs and
distributes the drought relief packages. This is not
part of her job but she does it for the families of
the school.
5000 happy barks for all the teachers of the world.
On the weekend there were five teachers working
at the school all weekend. This is a 9 to 3:30 job. I think not!! It amazes me that we are quick to
criticise teachers until we need them to solve the
problems of society.
5000 happy barks to the people who worked to
achieve the funding for a skate park in Trundle.
Well done to all involved.
I was very lucky in my childhood because I had a
good family. First with Guide dogs NSW / ACT,
then in the marble halls of Abbotsleigh and then
with my Trundle family, but not all children have
that. It is important that the community look out
for children because a village raises a child.

Meet the Author – Littlescribes Writing Program This year K-6 are involved in a program called
Littlescribes. This program – Littlescribe – allows
kids to write and draw their own book, then
photograph and collate the pages and add it to their
own private digital book club or make it available
for all Littlescribe members. There is also the
option to have the book made into a hard copy.
The students will be working with an author to
help them with creativity and get them started. The
authors for this year are Andrew Daddo and James
Foley.
Last Thursday the students participated in a
webinar to meet Andrew Daddo. It was such a
fantastic experience.
Sun Safe Policy This term is a No Hat No Play term. Students
MUST wear a wide brimmed hat. This means that if
they do not have a hat, they cannot participate in
any outdoor activities including lunch time play. We
keep a small selection of spare hats for those
students who accidently forget their hats. These
hats are washed regularly but are not to be used
every day by the same students. We will endeavour
to call parents to let them know their child has
forgotten their hat so that it can be found. Please make sure you put your child’s name inside their
hat.
Swimming For Sport This term we are reducing the size of our groups
by sending one group to the pool at 1:00pm. This
group will return to school at 2pm, have lunch and
return to class for half an hour.
The second group will walk to the pool as per usual
and can be picked up at 3pm at the pool.
Alternatively, if your child catches a bus home, they
will be picked up at the pool.
Please check your child’s note carefully. If your
child is in the group from 1:00-2:00pm, it is
preferable for your child to bring their lunch and
suggested that they also bring extra recess.
If your child is ordering their lunch, it would
preferable to order something cold rather than hot
food as the lunch orders will be dropped off at
1:00pm and the students in the 1:00-2:00pm session
will not be eating their lunch until 2:00pm.
WSSA Swimming Good luck to Jessica Morgan, Chloe Budd, Lucy
Hartig, Seth Prebendarcik and Thomas Sanderson
who will swim at the WSSA Swimming carnival on
Friday. Thank you to all the parents who will
transport and support their children on the day!
Trundle Eats Each Tuesday we are lucky enough to have the
option of Trundle Eats for lunch. When filling in a
lunch order, could you please write your child’s
year on their order. This makes distribution much
quicker at lunch time.
Crunch and Sip Children are encouraged to bring FRESH fruit or
vegetables to school for Crunch and Sip. They are
also able to have a sipper bottle of water in the
classroom.

Secondary
Congratulations to all of the students in Stage 6
who started their Minimum Standards Testing last
week. This is new for the students and their
willingness and application to these “extra”
examinations is commendable. We will continue
with these exams on Monday afternoons until we
have completed them.
Good luck to the TCS chess team for Wednesday’s
clash with Henry Lawson School at Grenfell. It is
awesome to see such a diverse range of activities
being offered to our students. Thanks to Mr Lynn
for his organisation and transport on the day.
This Thursday our students who are swimming at
Western Region will be competing at Dubbo.
Good luck to those Secondary students who are
competing on Thursday and to our Primary
students who will be in the pool on Friday. Thanks
to Mrs Morgan for her organisation of our students
competing.
On Friday I had the pleasure of working with the
Community Service Interest Elective students. I
want to mention these students and School Service
students as well. These electives require the
students to do actual physical work for the good of
other people. I was blown away by the positiveness
of these student’s attitude, as well as the joy they
displayed in working with each other.
It is a true mark of exceptionalism when people
can find joy in unrewarded work for improving
others lives. I hold the same beliefs when it comes
to School Service on a Thursday. Well done to all
the students and thanks to Mrs Budd and Miss
Rowlands for staffing these electives and the
enthusiasm that has been passed onto the students.
Year 7 and 9 will be sitting their NAPLAN
examinations next term. If you have any concerns
with your child partaking in these exams please
contact me at school to discuss this matter.
Have a great week

Last Tuesday, our Year11 students attended the RYDA Road Safety Education program. The day aims
to provide the students with information and skills to make them more aware of their decisions on the
