God’s Share This week, you should receive your personal invitation from Bishop
Kagan to participate in the Annual God’s Share Appeal. Your gift to our 61st Annual God’s Share Appeal will help provide the ministries, programs and services that are essential to the mission
of Jesus Christ in western North Dakota. Next weekend is commitment weekend. Please be as generous as you are able.
Prayer reduces stress.
Give something, however small, to the one in need. For it is not small to one
who has nothing. Neither is it small to God,
if we have given what we could.

Fifth Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018
You may remember a fascinating experiment that took place at Amherst College some years ago in which a squash seed was planted in good soil. When it had produced a squash about the size of a man's head, the researchers put a band of steel about it with a harness attachment by which they sought to determine the lifting power of the squash as it tried to grow.
They estimated that it might have the power of 500 pounds; which in itself would have been amazing. In a month it was pressing the 500 pounds; in two months 1,500 pounds, then it went to 2,000 and they had to strengthen the bands. It finally reached a pressure of 5,000 pounds when it broke the bands. They opened the squash and found it full of course fibers that had grown to fight away the obstacle that was hindering its growth. Roots extended out about 80,000 feet in all directions, as the squash was reaching out for help to strengthen the fiber.
I would hate to think that you and I have less determination than a squash. We have been given minds and bodies and dreams that we might struggle against life and produce fruit worthy of branches connected to the living Vine of Jesus. What great power we have within us to do great things in the name of the Lord. May we strengthen the connection we have to our Lord through daily prayer, humble reception of the sacrament of Reconciliation, and enthusiastically receiving the Eucharist at every opportunity. Our longing to know the Lord will be witnessed by the strength of our actions in love for one another.
He Is Risen, just as He said!

Eucharistic Prayer I is over 1000 years old. Dear Padre April 29, 2018
Just last week, my parish ran a “join up” campaign at all the Masses. I felt guilty because I didn’t sign up for anything. Do I have an obligation to join any of the parish organizations?
When you join any of your parish organizations, you will experience a network of people dedicated to building up the body of Christ through the various parish ministries. According to the Code of Canon Law, the baptized are fundamentally united in the communio fidelium, “a dynamic reality requiring the active participation of all the faithful in the Church’s life and mission” (Canon 209). It finds visible expression through public worship and through the exercise of obligations and rights. As a parish member, you are obligated to maintain communion with the Church; to fulfill your particular duties to the universal Church and your parish church; to live a holy life and promote the growth of the Church; to work to spread the gospel; and to follow what the pastor and bishops declare as teachers of the faith and leaders of the Church (Canons 209– 212). Laypeople are called to infuse their faith in Christ through all their undertakings in the secular world and within the Church. The various organized ministries of the parish offer ways that you, as a parishioner, can fulfill some of those obligations as you are able, in the Church’s life and mission inside and outside your parish. Perhaps you will rethink your decision to not sign up for anything. It’s never too late to become a parish volunteer! — [email protected]
What is the difference between sanctifying grace and actual grace?
The Catechism gives a great synopsis in paragraph 2000. It defines sanctifying grace as an habitual supernatural gift that “perfects the soul itself enabling it to live with God” and to “act by his love.” It’s the grace that justifies or saves us. What the Catechism means by “habitual” is that the gift is stable and permanent—that is, on condition one doesn’t forfeit the gift by committing a mortal sin. Sanctifying grace is distinguished from actual grace, which the Catechism identifies as “God’s interventions, whether at the beginning of conversion or in the course of the work of sanctification.” So, in short, sanctifying grace is God’s permanent gift residing in the soul that properly disposes us to love God and neighbor, and actual grace is God’s temporary interventions that prompts us to collaborate with him as we continue to grow in holiness. ~ Karlo Broussard, Catholic apologist
