Ipswich Motorway Upgrade Wacol to DarraDecember 2009

When construction commenced on the $824 million Australian Government funded upgrade of the Ipswich Motorway between Wacol and Darra, a target completion date of December 2010 was set. A number of key elements must be achieved before the project is officially complete, including:
•wideningoftheIpswichMotorwayfromtheLoganMotorwayatGailestoJervisStreetatDarrafromfourtosixlanes,withprovisionforeightlanesinthefuture•amajorupgradeoftheCentenaryHighwayInterchange•newbridgesoverBullockheadandSandyCreeksandtheIpswichrailline•newpedestrianandcyclistpaths•earthworksandbridgeworksforanewraillinefromDarratoSpringfieldwhichpassesthroughthenewCentenaryHighwayInterchange.
AsatNovember2009,theupgradewasmorethan75%complete.MotoristsarealreadydrivingonthenewwestboundandeastboundcarriagewaysoftheIpswichMotorway,and 17ofthe26newbridgestobebuiltarecomplete.
Thefirstsectionoftherailembankmentwasdeliveredaheadofschedulewiththeremainderdueforhandoversixmonthsearly.Thirtyofthe40majortrafficchangeshavebeencompletedandmorethan213,000plantshavebeenplanted.
Asthemilestonescontinuetobeachieved,thecompletiondateoftheIpswichMotorwayUpgrade:WacoltoDarraprojectedgescloserandcloser.Withgoodweatherandhardwork,theprojectistargetingcompletioninmid-2010,sixmonthsaheadofschedule.

Themostrecentcommunityprograms,whichranduringthesecondhalfof2009,involvedacolouring-incompetitionandaroadsafetyawarenesscompetition.Thecolouring-incompetitionwasheldforpupilsfromprepthroughtogradefour.Thewinnersofthiscompetitionwere:• 1st RichlandsStateSchool• 2nd DarraStateSchool• 3rd JamboreeHeightsStateSchool• 4th JindaleeStateSchool• 5th MiddleParkStateSchool

A new way to travel the Ipswich MotorwayA key part of the Ipswich Motorway Upgrade is the provision of high-quality
cycle and pedestrian walkways that connect to the existing Brisbane bike
and walking network.

In late 2008, Transport and Main Roads and Brisbane City Council formed a partnership to fast-track the delivery of the Wolston Road Connection Project.
ThisprojectinvolvedconstructingthemissinglinkbetweenWacolStationRoadandWolstonRoadatSumner.Theconnectionproject,fullyfundedbytheBrisbaneCityCouncil,wasdeliveredbytheSAFElinkAllianceasanextensionoftheIpswichMotorwayUpgrade:WacoltoDarraproject.ConstructioncommencedinJanuary2009andtookonly10monthstocomplete.Theopeningceremonywasheldon9October,withBrisbaneLordMayorCampbellNewmancuttingtheribbontoofficiallyopenthenewconnection.
Tomeettheneedsofcyclistsand
pedestrians,thefollowingfeatureswill
bedeliveredbytheendoftheproject:
• 2.7kilometresofcycleway
• 3.4kilometresofsharedpath(pedestrianandcyclepath)

• initiatedafooddriveforneedyfamilies,withautefulloffoodbeingdonatedtotheInalaFamilySupportCentre
• suppliedatemporaryreplacementmini-bustotheSumnerParkStVincentdePaul’sdepotaftertheirbuswasstolen
• mentoredandsupportedCentenaryStateHighSchoolandForestLakeCollegestudentsaspartoftheirYoung
AchievementAustralia(YAA)participation
• heldvariousfundraisingactivitiestoraisemoneyforAngelFlightAustralia-approximately$8000willbedonated
tofundasoftwareupgradeforthecharity
