What Hygiene Means ???
Hygiene refers to conditions and practices that
help to maintain health and prevent the spread of
diseases. Medical hygiene therefore includes a
specific set of practices associated with this
preservation of health.
For example :-
environmental cleaning
sterilization of equipment
water and sanitation
safe disposal of medical waste.
Reasons for Concerning ‘Rural Hygiene’
• The rural population of India comprises more
than 700 million people residing in about 1.42
million habitations spread over 15 diverse
ecological regions. So health issues
and cleanness in village has much
importance which is going to affect country’s
development.
• Essentially keeping a good standard of
hygiene helps to prevent the development
and spread of infections, illness and bad
odours .
• Being clean makes people confident as well as
having tidy surroundings around makes the
person of positive psychology which is essential
for development for villages.
Introduction
we conducted a survey with our group in
village ‘Golghoria’ situated at approximately 4
km from IIT Kharagpur Campus. The Survey
was done to get an overview of hygiene in
that village. Our presentation is based on the
existing hygiene and improvements that can
be done to improve their lifestyle.
The families we surveyed…

Objectives of the Survey
• To study the living conditions of village
people.
• To know the hygiene level in village.
• To know about their awareness and knowledge
about their hygiene level.
• To promote the good hygiene practice in village.
Observations …
Generally villagers are not aware of maintaining
required hygiene levels.
Many people usually take bath with dirty water of
pond due to shortage of clean water , which is
obviously dangerous to health.
The quality of food was not that good as material
sold by the greedy shopkeeper is impure .
No proper drainage system was observed.
No insecticides was given to the ponds as they
are a great source of producing mosquitos
causing diseases such as Malaria, Dengue.
Because of not much good facility regarding
health issues , people have to go far away for
their health treatment .
Water pulled up from the well are used for
drinking purposes without purifying them
properly.
pOSITIVE observations ><
Most houses have the facility of latrines and
bathroom in their home .
Villagers use Neem for cleaning their teeth
that avoid many oral problems naturally.
Villagers generally use clay and cow dung
mixture to paint their home walls and ground
which keeps insects and germs away due to
effect of cow dung.
First villagers need to be more educated about
their hygiene . So we need to create awareness
by conducting hygiene camp in villages with the
help of government and NGOs. In which they
will be told the different parts and importance of
hygiene.
Most of the families have latrine in their houses
but still some don’t .we can encourage people
to have it .
Water used for drinking and cooking purposes
should be boiled before using it as it may have
bacterias and viruses.
Washing fruits and vegetable before cutting
and keeping cooked food covered.
Pots that are being used in food taking should
be kept
clean after every use
