Welcome to the June issue of Total Retail. Here we are, half way through the year and it doesn’t

seem five minutes since we were trying to make light ofthe daily reported doom and gloom in the run-up toChristmas 2006.

For the first time since those dark days of winter, we’vegot really good news. I’m delighted to see that the latestreview of retail trading statements issued on the LSEduring the first quarter of 2007 shows that theoverwhelming majority of retailers issued positive orneutral trading statements – suggesting that retailing inthe UK has turned the corner.

The Grant Thornton Quoted Retail Companies Index hasshown that 44 per cent of all listed retailers issued positivetrading statements for the first three months of the year -a significant increase from the 33 per cent issued in 2006and 25 per cent in 2005.

If our postbag here at Total Retail is anything to go by,new store openings are on the increase too. It’s good tosee the confidence returning to our high streets – longmay it continue.

Now if only we could conjour up some rain .....
