Soldiers' deaths reported in the Journal during the Civil War totalled 222. Of these, 176 names were listed in the Roll of Honor of Tompkins County (indicated by RHTC in the notes); the remainder were given in news items or published letters from the 137th New York Volunteers (NYV) and from the 21st New York Cavalry. The listings in the notes normally give the soldier's company, his regiment, and the location and cause of death. Over 60 percent of the deaths resulted from disease; only 88 of the soldiers listed died in battle or from wounds received in action.
The term "legal notice" in the notes indicates a notice to creditors of the deceased to file their claims against the estate. Such a notice gives the name and place of residence of the deceased, but little other information except the names of the executors or administrators. Surrogate court proceedings (listed as "Surrog. Ct. proc") record actions relating to the sale of property and estate distribution. They often list the heirs and sometimes their relationship to the deceased. The present index contains 222 names found from legal notices or surrogate court proceedings; of these, 65 were listed in the death notices as well.
Following the main index is an alphabetical list of cross-references showing the names of relatives of the deceased, most commonly the father or parents of a married woman.
Finally there is an analysis of the ages at death. Of the 3,216 names in the main list (1,967 men, 1,240 women, 9 children for whom the gender was not given), ages were given for 2,252 (1,233 men, 1,019 women). The analysis shows the number of deaths at each age. There were six centenarians, three women and three men. One of the men, Harry Taylor, was said to have died at age 110, having once been a servant of George Washington. According to the Journal, Mrs. Pipher of Groton celebrated her 108th birthday on October 23, 1870. Presumably she died within the next few years, but no notice of her death could be found.
The average and median ages at death of those for whom the age is given are listed below. Included for comparison are the averages and medians from the Ithaca Journal for the year 1995.
1860-1874 1995
Women Men Overall Women Men Overall
Average 41.0 45.4 43.4 75.9 68.0 71.95
Median 39 49 44 80 73 76.5
The average and median ages for men are somewhat distorted (increased) by the omission of about 200 Civil War soldiers for whom the age at death was not given. It probably averaged about 22. The very few ages given for deceased soldiers ranged from 18 to 30.
While efforts have been made to make this index as accurate as possible, the author cannot guarantee it is error-free. He assumes no responsibility for inaccuracies in the original sources.
Thanks are due to Henry Cowan and Jane Dieckmann of the DeWitt Historical Society and Ethel Vrana of the Olin Library, Cornell University, for their assistance in compiling this Index, and to Joan E. Smith for her careful editing and proofreading.
