Hi Everyone!
This year’s Pancake Breakfast was a great success. NYS worked hard coordi-
nating all their teams to make everything run smoothly. Good job and thank you
NYS! I would like to thank Richard Hardy with the Kiwanis club, bringing their grill
and cooks, who did a fantastic job with the pancakes along with the help of a Chef
from Japanese School. Without their help, the lines would not move like they did
that morning. Thank you Johnson Sensei, who made the lunch items served by Judo
at the boutique. As always, this year’s breakfast and lunch was Ono.
A huge thanks goes to Ted Yoshimura, Bob Yamada, David Fusato, Toshi Tera-
moto, Fred Matsumoto and Tye Masaki who helped lay the tarp down onto the gym
floor and set up all the tables for the boutique vendors.
Becky Shinomoto and Helen Hikiji are the sole organizers in getting all the
vendors for this year’s boutique. Great job! I would like to say a big thank you to all
the volunteers from Japanese School, the Sugita family and NYS who helped at the
boutique. It looked like everyone was getting an early start on their holiday shop-
ping. As I walked around the gym, I would see people stop and chat with friends that
they have not seen for a while.
I would like to thank Ted Yoshimura for reinforcing the magnets on the wall
and thank David Fusato in helping Bob Yamada with the installation of the new
push bars for the classroom doors. We will also be installing the bars to the Dojo
doors. Great job!!
Attention, all graduating seniors! We will be accepting applications for the
NERIO/SEJSCC Scholarship. The form is available on the SEJS website. The dead-
line for the Scholarship will be February 10, 2018. The scholarships will be present-
ed at the annual Recognition Dinner on Saturday, April 21, 2018. Scholarship win-
ners must be present at the dinner to receive their award.
.
I wish everybody a safe Holiday Season!!
Happy Thanksgiving, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

After hosting bi-monthly Team SCKF practices all year through June, it
was great to get back to Norwalk Dojo-centric training as we prepared for
competitions at the Nikkei Games Budo Tournament in August, and the
Southern California Kendo Federation Team Championships in September,
where our yudansha team made it to the semifinals. Congratulations to Ji
Daniel, Domen Sumi, Nguyen Emil, Hamamura Yu, Chang Jeffrey, and Kari-
ya Yoshijiro for bringing back 3rd place medals!
We also went back to basics in preparation for promotional testing in
October. Congratulations to Chong Connie for passing 4kyu, and to Kim
Ryan, Cho Daniel, and Cho Ryan for passing 3kyu! A huge thank you to Nor-
walk Dance Club for letting us come in at the tail end of their gym time on
Thursdays in August and September so we could practice kendo kata.
Thank you also to the Center, and especially Na Wahine ‘O Kawena,
for allowing us to host monthly SCKF youth training practices starting in
September. These practices should benefit our own youth kenshi as well as
the federation’s. We will also be hosting the SCKF women’s seminar on
October 21st and 22nd.
Finally, we are planning a dojo picnic in November (better late than
never); stay tuned for details!
Norwalk Kendo Dojo practices Mondays from 7:00 to 8:30 pm and Fridays from 7:30
to 10:00 pm. We also practice iaido (Japanese sword forms) from 9 to 10:30 pm on
Mondays. New members are welcome. For more information, including upcoming
and past events as well as how to join, please see our website at

Wow, 2017 is almost at an end! What an eventful year it
was for us at Hikari. This year saw the retirement of our long-
time director and member, Mary Jane and Glen Mayeda; a first-
time trip to Japan for some; our successful Taiko Jams and a
collaboration with Chikara Daiko for the Summer Cultural Festi-
val!
Earlier in Septermber, we were invited back to perform for
the Orange County Japanese American Association’s Keiro kai,
or Senior Appreciation Day event. It is heartwarming to see
many people being recognized for their many contributions to
the Japanese culture and society, and it is always an honor for
us to entertain them.
We also did a return performance to the City of Artesia’s
International Fair and Diversity Festival. This annual event cele-
brates the many cultures in Artesia, and there is so much to
see, eat and do. The many stage acts included dances from
many different cultures, live bands performing music, and of
course, taiko!
In December we will host our 33rd annual Christmas party for
members and their guests. This is always a fun way to end the year,
as well as a chance to meet and share our time with friends and fami-
ly in a relaxed and festive atmosphere.
As 2017 comes to a close, we look forward to seeing what 2018
brings for Hikari Taiko. Warm wishes for the holidays from all of us;
see you all in 2018!

Oh how I look forward to this every year. My pancakes
were light and fluffy, my eggs nicely scrambled. But I have to
say that I enjoy the pancake breakfast primarily for the Portu-
guese sausage. Where else am I going to get it other than driv-
ing to Marukai in Gardena? The last two years I was fortunate
enough to buy some leftover sausage which my kids and I ate
for breakfast over the next couple of days. Leftovers never tast-
ed so good!
But what’s pancake breakfast without the Holiday Bou-
tique? After eating and chatting with friends and family, my
daughter and I headed over to the gym, while my son donned
some plastic gloves and helped buss tables. We spent a good
hour checking out all the craft tables before finally picking out
what we were going to buy. In the end we went home with some
insulated lunch bags for me, a Pokemon coin purse and Kelly’s
Kookies for her, and a hand-crafted birthday card for her broth-
er. I thought it was a nice relaxing morning!
My sentiments were echoed by Joane Manalac (Sonics & Wol-
verines) who said, “It was enjoyable eating a great breakfast while
hanging out with families from other teams,” and Marissa Asistin
(Scorpions) who said, “such a nice way to spend a Saturday morning,
having a great breakfast and shopping with family and friends!”
Thank you very much to this year’s lead coordinators: Miki Suzu-
ki & Cindie Nishida (MegaDragons), Michael Green (Aces), Ang
Ogasawara (Black Storm) & David and Roxanne Bonar (Dragons 2) for
orchestrating another successful Hawaiian Pancake Breakfast. And
thank you as well to all our NYS coaches, parent reps, players and
families; without you this would not have been possible. Mahalo!
Awesome job cooks! Pancakes, Portuguese
sausage and eggs non-stop!!
Everyone enjoyed their time, eating and chatting with old friends.
And then it was time to shop shop shop ‘til you drop!!

The Rascals program has become a mainstay at NYS, where
many young boys and girls, ages 5-7, come to learn and develop
their fundamental basketball skills. Every year the summer and
fall sessions are packed with little ones who just love to play bas-
ketball. Some families come for the recreational and social as-
pect, while many others participate mainly to form 2nd grade
teams at the end of the fall session. Many people have said that
Rascals is one of the better-run programs in the area and that’s
why they come.
Yoko Amano, who is the team parent for the 5-year old girl’s
team, had this to say about Rascals: I volunteered to be a team
parent this last summer session for the first time, and I became
a team parent again this fall session. It was a great opportunity
for me to get to know and talk with kids, their parents, and coach-
es who have been doing a wonderful job connecting with kids.
Many kids seem to be very excited and motivated to play basket-
ball and of-course look forward to the snacks waiting after prac-
tice! The girls on our team enjoy the social atmosphere. They
find new friends through this Rascals program. A lot of smiles
have been seen from the girls too! I am thankful to have
been involved and connected with people."
This year’s Rascals session led to the formation of two 2nd
grade boys teams and two 2nd grade girls teams. NYS wishes all
these teams the best of luck in the SEYO winter season.

The Japanese School began the year in September with high
enrollment numbers including a waiting list for the Kindergarten
class. Our first event, Back to School Day, was held on September
30th with teachers giving information about their curriculum for the
year. We had a very good turnout.
The annual Undokai was held on October 7th at Gerdes Park.
Students, new families and teachers enjoyed the festivities. This
event is an annual event in schools all over Japan and is a national
holiday. Students are divided into the red team or white team and
compete in various athletic events. Students and parents partici-
pated in the balloon game, donut eating race, and tug of war. Stu-
dents competed in the relay race, obstacle race, and spoon race.
This year the white team won. We had a very good turnout this year
with participation from the adult classes as well as many grandpar-
ents. The adult class participated in the races as well as helped with
the games. The white team won the events two years in a row. A
great time was had by all. Thanks to the PTA for providing the deli-
cious lunch and prizes to all.
The next cultural experience will be the “7-5-3 Festival” to be
held November 4th . This is the celebration of children who are 3, 5
and 7 years old. Traditionally, children wear special kimono for a
visit to the Shrine and parents purchase “Chitose Ame”, a special
candy for this festival. Students in the kindergarten and beginners
class will have an opportunity to dress in the traditional kimono and
take pictures. Also in November, the Gakuen students will be per-
forming for the Keiro no Hi luncheon on November 12th . This is a
traditional holiday in Japan to say thanks to our elders for all they
have done for us.
We are fast approaching the end of the year and Gakuen stu-
dents will be celebrating December with a special visit from our
friend from the North Pole. There will be no classes December 23rd
and 30th. Classes will resume January 6th. Everyone’s having fun playing traditional Japanese games!!

Norwalk Dance Club 40th Anniversary Dance –
September 23rd, 2017
Taiko
1977 was the beginning of the Nor-
walk Dance Club. For 40 years, NDC has
provided monthly dances for all of us who
enjoy dancing. Also, to help us improve
our dancing skills, NDC has Glenn Yata,
giving dance lessons every Tuesday even-
ing.
To celebrate this 40th anniversary,
the tables were decorated with pretty fall colors of Mums. A
Bento dinner from Sango in Los Alamitos was served along with
a beautiful, delicious cake for dessert from Joyce Bakery. Thank
you, George & Helen, for arranging this for all of us & to all those
who helped in the kitchen. Thanks, Yuso, for getting us back to
dancing! We needed to do some dancing after that good meal!
Then to make the evening more special, the Hikari Taiko
group entertained us with their drum performance. They had
such energy & a great musical beat! We all could feel their pas-
sion as they performed “ Tropical Storm in the Rain Forrest”.
Thank you, Harriet Y.
Again, we thank Edna for arranging the seating & to all
those who attended & helped in making this such a delightful
40th Anniversary evening!
Thanks to Helen Hikiji, who each year chairs our Picnic (our
indoor version) and make it an enjoyable and feasting time. When-
ever Helen oversees an event it is done to perfection. She brought
her own BBQ grill to facilitate grilling and clean up. Many thanks to
our ladies who brought yummy salads and desserts also. Everyone
had a good time on Sept. 26th followed by a short meeting and
favorite pastime, Bingo.
Thank you to our members for helping at Oct. 14th’s Pancake
Breakfast and Boutique by distributing trays at the door of the Bou-
tique. This is a big event and our Center and the membership get
involved to make it successful.
As we approach 2018, the Seniors have decided to have a
committee to preside over our organization. It is difficult to find a
volunteer who will take the presidency. So at our Oct. 24th meet-
ing, it was proposed to have five people share the responsibility.
So far the volunteers are Doris Yarwood, Becky Shinomoto and
Mary Iwami. This shared governance allows approximately 2
months of presiding over meetings. More information will follow
before voting next month.
Norwalk Dance Club Halloween Social October 28th, 2017
Well, our Halloween friends came to visit us again. Mr. Ghost &
his scarecrow friends thank Edna & Helen for letting them out of their
boxes. They enjoyed watching the 58 dancers dance to the music of our
DJ, Yuso. A big thanks to Helen, & the kitchen crew, Jean I., Aileen M.,
Hideko I., Jim N., & Harriet, for filling
our plates with a slice of pizza, salad,
& a slice of pumpkin pie for our
snack.
Now that everyone was fed, it
was time to get serious & dance
around the floor either dancing the
Waltz, Foxtrot, Westcoast Swing,
Quickstep, Rumba, Cha-Cha, etc.
Then there were some lucky winners
in a drawing to next year’s dances.
So NDC thanks all of those who at-
tended the October Halloween social.
But don’t forget NDC’s Fall Social on
Saturday, November 25th!
Mr. Ghost & the scarecrows say
good-bye.
Keiro No Hi will be held on Nov. 12. The Center kindly presents
a luncheon to honor our seniors over 80 yrs. old to observe “Respect
for Elders Day”. This a tradition in Japan. Our seniors feel privileged
and are very grateful for a special day allotted for them.
Our Christmas luncheon meeting will be held on Dec. 12th at
the Center for which $12 is being collected by Diane Mercer, pay-
ment due by Nov. 14. New Year’s luncheon will be on Jan. 23rd and
will be held at the Four Seasons Buffett in Cerritos.
